I heard once that there was going to be an American equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize. Did this come about?

Also: if albums from other countries could be added to this year's list, which ones would the panel go for? Which ones SHOULD the panel go for?

Yeah, it's called the Shortlist. The first prize was handed out last year. Sigur Ros won. No one cared.

Hahaha it's called the Grammys. They've been doing it for AGES. No one cares.

See here. I like this set-up much better than the Mercury.

The Shortlist Music Project 2002, starts with a longlist - that is slowly being added to by the various chosen listmakers.

Longlist So Far

Noticably, that list is culled from Britain and the US (and probably a few other places as well), wheras the Merc reserved for Brit artists.

I like the internationalist list better.

It's so boring and predictable, how is it any different from the Grammys?

I agree (Kim Gordon's picks aside, possibly). The Mercury shortlist looks interesting in comparison.

Jeff W, Thursday, 1 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kim Gordon's list was composed solely to make her look cool in comparison to the other soccer moms on her street.

Anybody else look at that and wonder if Beck's choices were going to influence his next release?

Dan Perry, Thursday, 1 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

okay this isn't my cup of tea either but let's not get carried away. Aside from Ryan Adams none of the artists on that list would get within a country mile of a Grammy awards ceremony.

(unless erase errata and C Dion did a duet last year which I somehow missed)

Anyone else bothered how essentially only Gordon is "respresenting" for female artists.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 1 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone else="repressenting" then?

The Actual Mr. Jones, Thursday, 1 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(and now that you mention it, yes)

The Actual Mr. Jones, Thursday, 1 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't tell me. It was a pun.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 1 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

err... sorry?

Beck demonstrates taste and class by putting the Radar Brothers on his list.

"It's so boring and predictable, how is it any different from the Grammys?"

Aphex Twin, Radar Brothers and Timo Maas have been gracing Grammy shortlists lately? Blimey...

Matt DC, Thursday, 1 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the implication is more that if there's a collective sense of 'crit appreciation Grammies' out there, these picks are it, rather than saying these folks will be beating up Michael Greene or his replacement on camera anytime soon.

On a note of sheer personal antipathy, picking the Radar Bros. for any sort of praise is a sign of a cold, miserably wintry death in my soul.

How does Ryan Adams end up on the Shortlist? And why is a Stroke a Listmaker?

Don Weiner, Thursday, 1 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

From Kim Gordon:
"Basically No-Wave was the whole idea that anyone could pick up an instrument and a pick and start playing. It wasn't about corporate homogenization of youth culture. English punk was about "we're killing rock n roll," but No-Wave fans were really doing it. They were so much more nihilistic."

BITCH PLEASE
