Bootlegging shall eat itself...

Freelance Hairdresser was probably the best thing that could have happened to bootlegs to be honest, "Marshall Gets Snookered" stopped everything become too, how shall we say, "muso" in bootlegs. This is his latest. I love. Probably only of full use to Brits, though...

New "It's over, nobody listens to Richie Bernaud!" answers.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this is pretty fucking brilliant, I applaud it

Steve K, Wednesday, 31 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Think of it as a plea for sanity after a couple of months of utter madness... I didn't know what I was starting, but I'm trying to end it!! :)

Freelance Hairdresser, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fucking brilliant. How about a "Get Ur Redundancy On" as an encore?

Nate Patrin, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's taken on a life of its own, Freelance! ;-) I bought the Boom Selection collection to have an artifact from the whole time...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, nice Young Ones reference there. You should post on the other thread if you haven't already. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Young Ones... but of course! It's really great to be here at this benefit gig... :)

Which other thread? I couldn't find it...

cheers

/ FH

"One Minute Marioland" was fucking mint as well.

Oh, and "The Weather Episode" by Go Home Productios is shit, by the way.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Really? Hmm... well, I tell you - GHP's stuff is some of the best I've heard recently. I haven't heard The Weather Episode, but Get It On With A Foxy Lady, Making Plans for Vinyl and Legacy Scrubbed are really, really good. Check them out.

Nice to know you like One Phat Breeda and I Wish I Was A Bulldog... Soundhog'll be pleased. He's a good mate... we share an e-mail address, ya know... :)

Can you give me a link to that other thread?

That Hairdresser bloke, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bling-bling. I think.

Mr Swygart, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, that'd be this one then. Hopefully.

THAT ONE.

Mr Swygart, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But without the space. Which is where it went wrong otherwise. GRARRR!

Mr Swygart, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're Soundhog? It finally makes sense...

I post at the Get Yr Bootleg on forum as Mr Darcy, I would put together my own boots, but I'm lazy. "Doo Wop (That Thing)" vs Drinking In LA and Thong Song vs Goddess On A Hi-Way both work, and would be done by me if I had any desire.

I did like "Enemy On The Dance Floor" by GHP, but it has the best and worst of GHP in it, ie, the desire to create the shock of the two artists together ahead of the track actually being any good (the end of the verses just don't work as the track is too mellow).

Still, rather me having a go than one of Frenchbloke or Dsico's touching descriptions of others MP3s: "this is rubbish. Go away".

Dom Passantino, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Reviving this thread partially because I discovered tv.cream.org and after gawping at the awesome craziness British TV viewers got to indulge in back in the '70s I figured that the songs that make this up are all Brit TV themes (well except for A-Team and Knight Rider). Damned if I know any of 'em, though. Any help?

My sound card isn't working at the moment, but, from memory:

Pot Black
Grandstand
Match of the Day
The Bill
Cricket
The Young Ones
Animal Magic
Rhubarb and Custard

I didn't know what I was starting, but I'm trying to end it!! :)

why?

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 26 September 2002 07:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Because after the 149th "Without Me" bootleg, you start to lose interest.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 26 September 2002 08:06 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, ok, but there's still mileage in the whole mash-up thing isn't there? just because imagination-lacking chancers hop on the bandwagon (and where doesn't this happen?) doesn't mean it can't be a creative medium does it? for me the inter-contextualising of music remains a vital and exciting idea.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 26 September 2002 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

the problem is i think Cassette Boy have made worthwhile mock-up cut-ups and pisstake pastiches redundant for everyone else for a while...could The Parker Tapes be topped or merely equalled?

and conventional bootlegs/mash-ups are old hat! there are too many 'Without Me' bootlegs but i'm still thinking of new ones every day (with 'Lets Dance', with 'Da Funk', with 'You're The One That I Want' etc.) and the lack of new acapellas in general doesnt help...or maybe it does - the novelty has certainly worn off but this doesnt mean i wont stop enjoying them, listening to them and making them as long as its novel, well done etc.

think 'Intro Inspection' and 'PopChopCompelation' for ways to keep it interesting

blueski, Thursday, 26 September 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't agree with blueski. The novelty of "conventional" mashups may have worn off, but the best ones aren't really about "novelty" per se -- they're about great records. It isn't even really neccesary to be aware of the process with tracks as good as "Making Plans For Vinyl" or "Close to Women." They're brilliant pieces of music, whether you recognize the source materials or not. "Intro-Inspection" is more of a novelty record to my ears, more of a throwback, more about Osymoso and less about the track. The challenge for mashups (besides finding new acapellas) will be to maintain their rigor, to resist the temptation to turn into just another means of showing off DJ chops.

Burr, Friday, 27 September 2002 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

is 'intro inspection' JUST about showing off? and would that make it any less worth our while?

another interesting thing is how you'd decide which 'independent woman' bootleg is better than another...execution and choice of track, and your personal view of the track used...anything else?...i say this cos i dont like the 'close to women' one, at least not as much as the 'dreadlock child' one...i was thinking about 'dreadlock child' this morning and how perfect it is...maybe its just cos DC's vocals lend themselves better to the reggae groove of 10CC rather than The Cure....then again perhaps you find the more bizarre juxtaposition more appealing precisely because it doesnt make as much sense

blueski, Friday, 27 September 2002 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I don't think "Into-Inspection" is only about showing off and it's probably not the best example of what I was trying to say -- which is just that the sort of "return to cut-up" aesthetic that it represents seems a lot less interesting and compelling than more song-oriented mashups.

As for "Close to Women," the appeal for me is definitely not "the more bizarre juxtaposition," since when I first heard it I didn't even recognize the rhythm bed. (Never been much of a Cure fan.) Rather it's just that to me it's a truely magical sounding record. I agree that the vocals "fit" better in "Dreadlock Child" and it's quite good (if a little stock). But "Close to Women" sounds like nothing else I've ever heard: It's the sound of a spell being cast, Beyonce seems to be speaking in tongues. And it's such an effortless groove.

Burr, Saturday, 28 September 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

(Has everyone heard Whitney v. Kraftwerk? I quite like the chorus.)

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 28 September 2002 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Whytney vs Kraftwerk is like ten million years old. Its incredible, but thats what expected from a Girls On Top bootie
