Jacques Dutronc

Today in a music store, I heard some freaky French music. When I looked at the display disc, it turned out to be Jacques Dutronc, an artist I've been curious about. Music sounded bizarrely entertaining, but I thought if I stayed in the store for the duration of the cd, that would be enough listening for me. Now, I wish I could hear more. Where is a good place to start?

Paris s'éveille is one of his best songs. It does not seem to be on most of the best-of's like Gold (=Les Indispensables) and L'Essentiel nevertheless. Strange. Dutronc is also known as actor and is married to Françoise Hardy for whom he also wrote some songs. He is quite big but also controversial in France. A hit single of his was called Merde in France (merde=shit). His voice has become much graver during his career due to excessive smoking. He also collaborated with Gainsborg on Guerre et Pets.

Gainsbourg, not Gainsborg, of course.

Absolument! PAris (the Eiffel Tower 'a' was a genuine typo) S'eveille is fantastic - & recreates the feel of a Paris morning perfectly. You can find cheap 'best ofs' quite easliy. His stuff ranges from chanson, through jazzy pastiches to real '60s beat/garage. Mungo Jerry's Alright Alright Alright hit is, in fact, the English version of JD's Et Moi Et Moi..., but there's little similarity.

I've a comp of much later (circa 80's) stuff which doesn't have the same appeal as the early stuff. The words may still be good but I don't have enough french.

i'm a pretty big fan of his big beat stuff like "jai un tigre dans m'a guitar" and "cactus". it's all very easy to listen too and as a result all the more less obvious stuff like "paris s'eveille" will totally grow on you. i don't know what albums were good but i have a few singles and then (of course) a 'best of' CD.

Does anyone know if he ever did a collaboration with Francoise Hardy? A record store clerk told me this many years ago and I have been searching half heartedly since.

Dutronc sings on her latest album Clair-Obscur which is rather nice though not groundbreaking. Don't remember if it is a duet. The sound is more modern (trip-hop echos) than usual with Hardy.

i was thinking more of a 60s collaboration

According to a book I read about Dutronc, his first four albums are supposed to be his best. Just to confuse matters these four albums are all called "Jacques Dutronc". During one trip to France I bought his second album from 1968 and it is excellent. It contains "Paris S'Eveille" and other great songs such as "Hippie Hippie Hourrah".

Does anyone else see a bit of Scott Walker (regarding his weirder 70's output).

On Nous Cache Tout, On Nous Dit Rien kills me.

four years pass...

Jacques has a v confusing discography - 7 eponymous albums! 2 came out in 1968 so you can't even tell the difference by the year.

I my high school French teacher had played this guy, I'd be fluent by now.

Pretty much my primary motivation to learn some French atm.
