Pete Namlook: Time to Revisit?

For a long time, I wrote Mr. Kuhlmann off as a new agey- techno navel gazer -- I had one of his Laswell collaborations, which was fine, but nothing about his contributions to it struck me in any particular way. Fax seemed to have its moment and disappear. The trance stuff he made his name on in the early 90s wasn't my thing. He seemed to try to be all things to all people.

But lured in by his rather impressive collection of collaborators, I've recently been digging through his stuff on Last.FM of late and found his body of work to be surprisingly musical, rich and varied. For instance:

The Silence series -- with wordless female vocals, some of it sounds like a cross between Music for Airports and Mike Oldfield's Incantations.

The Dark Side of the Moog w/ Klaus Schulze series is all over the map -- some of it is pure Berlin School -- other records are Wendy Carlos-ish analog environments a la Sonic Seasonings. And still others are more digital sounding.

The Air records betray Namlook's jazz roots -- lots of tasty little guitar licks over ambient pads, etc.

The Shades of Orion material w/ Tetsu Inoue -- really polished and rich ambient work.

And so on. Sixteen years on from the Fax heyday, is it time to give the man his due?

Great interview here, too:

And the silence is just overwhelming. Perhaps Pete can make another record out of it.

Love the idea of someone revisiting this stuff, hope others chime in.

The only contribution I can make is that he's done loads of albums with Move D. The track Stranger he did recently with him is great - a very long stretched out piece of mellow tech house basically.

to my right is a case logic box.
inside are 40+ FAX releases from '94 which have been kep seperate from the rest of the archive.
for a year i became addicted (FAX collecting was once described as 'ambient crack') and listened to nothing else but FAX/RI.
since then i have avoided the box as i know that should i start listening again, there is a serious chance that my bank balance will suffer.
having said that, i have always thought that 40+ releases means that i have the FAX oevure pretty well covered, and that i don't have any real need for more, or am i missing out on some really good stuff ?
as for the music.
well, when i do dip in, i love the atom heart material the most.

Sad news. An amazing, visionary music producer.

very sad. i hadn't listened to any FAX stuff for quite a while but recently re-visited a lot of it and ended up watching a youtube interview with him where i was surprised to find out how young he was. i always assumed he was much older. 52 is way too young to go.
