Piezo — I love how the whole track is basically a long decay into those waves of synth and that electronic moan. Beautiful.

This is my favourite Ae album but apparently I always listen to it as a whole without stopping to notice which track I'm on. That said, Montreal was my first thought.

This album is such an incredible leap forward from the last one - I basically think of it as when they became ae proper. So much to love - Silverside, with its delightful coda; the drama of Teartear (a friend once said he thought that was an incredibly melancholy track, and although the title and dedication hint in that direction, I hear something much more sinister). But I gotta vote for Piezo.

Basically this. Sounds like a mechanical wolf howling at the moon. Beautiful album - the first truly great release of many by this band.

Pleased for the Piezo love - always seemed like an overlooked track when I used to discuss Ae on Warpcomm.

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 10:01 (fifteen years ago)

ledge OTM, this is the album where they stopped being just another Warp band. "Teartear" is probably my favourite ... pros: it's dramatic and sinister and totally amazing and all that. Cons: it's mechanical and stoic and really "cold" compared to the rest of the album, making it an appropriate lead-in to "Tri Repetae" (which was a digression, although if it had all sounded like "Teartear" then it wouldn't have been).

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 10:06 (fifteen years ago)

tough... tracks are very much of a piece on this one. piezo is probably the right choice, but could be persuaded on pretty much anything from 5-11

I'm in the same boat, I'll have to listen again before I vote. This is also my favourite cover of any Warp release, the gatefold is beautiful.

Barry, that is challopsy if I might say re: Tri Repetae! We can discuss further when that poll goes up. "Foil" is to my ears fairly mechanical as well. It's not a cold, faceless mechanicalism, but more calculated and precise.

I'm a surprised that anyone might find "Teartear" melancholic -- it sounds so foreboding and menacing, with the big stomping percussion and the buzzing sounds. It's deeply terrifying, and thus probably my favorite, but I recently listened again (Amber was briefly my favorite Ae album, but I've been sleeping on it for a while now) and kind of realized/remembered just how tight it is.

Cliff Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

I agree that Tri Repetae is overrated, but I'll go into the reasons why on the next poll.

village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 08:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yulquen is my favourite. Very close contenders are Further, Nil ans Montreal. I never liked Piezo all that much but i'll listen to it again.

jed_, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 09:40 (fifteen years ago)

Leeee, it's not challopsy if I've been saying it for 15 years!

(This was my favourite Autechre album for a long while ... I still think "Amber" and "Chiastic Slide" stand head and shoulders above their other albums)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

Chiastic Slide eh? That's a mindbending record - very hard to get into. Great album artwork though.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Nine... I think. It could be a number of tracks, but I remember Nine hitting me so hard the first times through, the melody and rhythm as one.

Is that one of the Aphexy tracks?

Bump.

This was hard but I went for 'Yulquen', that one really is melancholic.

I have changed my mind about 60 times this week and now I'm voting for Further.

Barry, is your fondness for this album due to its Canadianess?

one year passes...

That little moment at the end of Silverside, where you finally get to hear the full symphonic phrase that the rest of the track was only hinting at...damn beautiful moment, man. Might have voted it for that alone.

A really amazing "Amber"-era live recording:

“Slip” by Autechre. From their 1994 album Amber. This main riff is a 29 beat cycle over a 4/4 beat. So the beat “slips” when the accent shifts and the melody seems like it never repeats. I plan to develop this more.

I can't say I've ever noticed that melodic slippage. Maybe there is a slightly odd feel to the track but the melody sounds consistent to my ears.
