Cos I do. Nice one Graham!

RickyT, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

This is even better than Insane Clown Posse!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

One suggestion: could we drop the nuilx:testsite:boards line? It looks a bit cluttered up at the top there

RickyT, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to bitch about this bitch: BITCH BITCH BITCH, BITCH! Okay, done.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I have one actual gripe, not that old ILx was any different, but here's our chance to fix it: right now when you do some task like posting a message or logging in, you get a page with a message saying "Message posted" (or somesuch, I already forget which two words they were). It would be nice if you could include a metatag that would wait 2 seconds (five?) and then forward the user back to the thread they posted from. Either that, or put a link back to that thread at the bottom of the page...always easier to click the link than to go for the back button. This is especially important after the login screen, because it says "logged in" and then just sits there. Is this an unreasonable request with the programming language you have, Graham?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

By the way, I like the fact that this posting window is at the bottom of the thread by default, instead of having to click through to a new page.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Cool Graham. This RoXor.

alext, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah wot sean sez abt the dead-end pages given as results of actions.

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it. Let's start some actual threads here, seen?

M Matos, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it. Let's start some actual threads here, seen?

M Matos, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

it's only a test matos!

Josh, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we be as easily googled? That would be a loss.

Adam Vincent Alexandre (Keiko), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to bitch about this bitch: BITCH BITCH BITCH, BITCH! Okay, done.
Or we could all do like that weird scene in "Being John Malkovich" when Malkovich went into his own head.
M1: Malkobitch?
M2: Malkobitch Malkobitch.
M1: Malkobitch. Malkobitch MalkoBITCH Malkobitch...
M2: Malkobitch.

Lord Custos, Tuesday, 23 July 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Sean re: the login screen. Otherwise, I think it's fantastic. The 'about me' pages are a nice touch, too...

Mark Pytlik (Mark P), Tuesday, 23 July 2002 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

test

alext, Wednesday, 24 July 2002 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Just dipping my toes into the nu-world.

mmmmmmm, warm fresh.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Me thinks a line there should be between final answer and contribute new answer.

noodles, mr, Monday, 5 August 2002 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree, an extra return before "Contribute an answer" would make it perfect

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 6 August 2002 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

When come back, bring line!

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 07:37 (twenty-three years ago)

You're gonna look damn stupid now.

More complaints.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 10:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice work Graham. No exact time below the post (why do I like this? my secret), the email is cut off and e-mails can only be sent via the form, great. Fuck off spammers!
Only problem I had was the registration. I got the error message:
"Problem adding user:
Database Insert Failed!"
How come? And will the automatic insertion of name and email work when doing a new post? Will there be an automatic login by cookie?
One more thing I would like is the option to add my blog url during the registration. Out of all people who registered with an url we could make a nice links page (dynamic if possible). What do you think?

If line breaks work without the cumbersome br in parentheses there should be an empty line before this sentence.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Another good thing is that linking to individual posts is possible. But why is the link not displayed by default? It can only be seen when clicking on "Show Message Extras" in the left corner at the bottom. What do the others think? And the message extras also include the exact time. Grrr. All right then I shouldn't post at work anyways...
Concerning the register problem: could it be that the name is not supposed to contain blanks? That should be fixed I guess as I don't want to call myself alexinmainhattan. If that isn't possible I could live with it nevertheless. Maybe that's not so important, what do you think?

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

My last post for now here. Sean has also a blank in his name so it can't be the blank which does not let me register. Could it be the two blanks in "alex in mainhattan". Or is that name too long? Mystery. My login name didn't have a blank in it.
Nice statscock with links to the users and the email form. And the search is cool as well.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 11:34 (twenty-three years ago)

One more thing, I think I am obsessed. The search is truly wonderful In the future I will be able to find all my posts (e-mail field) on Joy Division (text field) or Ned's on MBV. But the resulting posts have the BR in parentheses in them. They don't have to be typed anymore when posting which is great but they show up in the results. Could we get rid of that? And could we put the links next to the posts as well in the search results?
Moving up in the statscock. This was a test to post a link.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 7 August 2002 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

The not being able to register thing was my fault, nothing to do with anything you were entering (you'll get a pretty error message with an explanation if it's your fault).

The search engine shows HTML as tags to stop HTML in random matching posts messing up the results - it should show line breaks properly. Permalinks in the results are a good idea, but on pages by default it gets too cluttered, and I don't think they get used *that* often (if you're bothered you can set them to always be on for you in the settings page, and you can add your blog URL there (an automatic links page is a cool idea))

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Hold on, the search results are already permalinks to messages (except when searching for threads - I'll add permalinks to those)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks Graham.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Concerning the url, wouldn't an extra field with some info what the website is about be useful? Especially in view of an automatic links page this would make sense I guess.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, in the hub-bub I forgot to say well done to Graham! So, yeah Graham, well done, you rule!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

it would be nice to be able to click on the 'user' to see their profile. i think the actual e-mail address could be 'abstracted' out in favour of on-site private messaging, displaying the actual e-mail address in the profile only if the user is willing.

what about adding time (as in HH:MM) to the posts instead of just dates?

what about on the main index pages for each forum listing beside each thread the number of posts in the thread, who the thread was started by, and the date, time and user identity of the last post.

how about breaking up the threads into pages like (1,2,3 ... 10, 11) with clickable links so that from the index page for the forum you could skip directly to a later point in the thread instead of scrolling right through. it might make the threads load a little easier too.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

oh! (sorry to be a pest ... i'd be willing to pitch in with php skillz if anything needs to get done) ... can the font be different? arial and verdana are much more modern and appealing to the eye. they also render better cross-platform (look much nicer on xp, osX and linux machines).

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

fields - either try "show message extras" in the left bottom corner or change your settings to be able to click on the user for the profile and to see the exact time. The name of the person who started a thread already appears next to the questions on the questions page.
Graham - the login is a little cumbersome. Is there no way to use cookies or something like that?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

On the new answers page it says for this thread (16 new answer). I guess you check for the first digit and if it is a one you take the singular, don't you, Graham?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

This is exactly the sort of misogyny that makes me hate ILX.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex: Thanks for spotting the plural problem. Yeah I was (me=dumb).

Login does use cookies - If you\'ve logged in once and your computer stores cookies properly, you shouldn\'t have to log in ever again, except on a different computer or if you logout or whatever.

Fos:
It would be nice to be able to click on the 'user' to see their profile. i think the actual e-mail address could be 'abstracted' out in favour of on-site private messaging, displaying the actual e-mail address in the profile only if the user is willing.

I find not sharing email addresses totally antisocial - they're hidden from spambots so there's no need *not* to share it with people (you've got to [gasp] *trust* us a bit - this is what I mean by antisocial - you've got to make a v.v. small leap of faith to post here). Links to user profiles are available if you click "Show Message Extras" (or turn them on in your Settings) - I don't really see why we should have them on by default, you only ever need to look at them once, if at all.

what about adding time (as in HH:MM) to the posts instead of just dates?

Again, there's a setting, and it's in Message Extras, but it makes it too formal to have them on by default I think - and people have already complained about having them recorded at all.

what about on the main index pages for each forum listing beside each thread the number of posts in the thread, who the thread was started by, and the date, time and user identity of the last post.

Respectively - why?; it's on the new questions page, and it's kind of irrelevant on the New Answers page, cuz other people will have posted; date is there; time is a Setting; *especially* WHY?.

how about breaking up the threads into pages like (1,2,3 ... 10, 11) with clickable links so that from the index page for the forum you could skip directly to a later point in the thread instead of scrolling right through. it might make the threads load a little easier too.

I covered this on NYPLM having them on one page encourages you to read the whole thread, and it stops artificial breaks in the flow of it. You can always turn on Show Only Last n Messages in the Settings - I think this covers the useful functionality of paging (ie not having to reload messages you've already read), without the horrible horrible drawbacks (though maybe it should be time based instead?).

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"magic" quotes will be the death of me.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

no pages breaks on threads pls

fonts at will of user\'s own browsers, surely? i don\'t mind arguing to the death abt coltrane or rockism, but i\'m not gunna waste my life tussling w.mentalists who want to read the interweb in chicago or fkn onyx

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 7 August 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I've added web pages to the stats page - I'm a bit wary of a proper automatic links page cos of lack of quality control, but if anyone can think of an elegant solution to this I'll do it.

Blimey: 6000 hits already and this is only the test site.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 8 August 2002 01:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Login does use cookies - If you\'ve logged in once and your computer stores cookies properly, you shouldn\'t have to log in ever again
Automatic login via cookies neither works at work with IE 5.5 and Win2000 nor at home with IE 5.0 I think and Win98. I never had cookie problems with other sites, Graham, I guess it is something on your side. It doesn't even work when I close IE and reopen it again.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 8 August 2002 07:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey you're right Alex. Apparently you have to give your cookies an expiration date to stop them expiring immediately (I've set them to 20 years in the future). Obviously the tutorial I read about how to do cookies in was bollocks as it didn't really mention this.

You'll have to login manually one more time to get one of these new cookies. Er, sorry.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 8 August 2002 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

when i click "show message extras" it is including ip address even though i did not tick that box (not a complaint, just pointing out a glitch)

when i look at my OWN poster details i get a "bad request" notice (obviously i only have to do this once a day, to remind myself what my earthly attributes are supposed to be and who you mugs all think i am)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 8 August 2002 10:56 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry i am being dumb, the top glitch is not a glitch at all ignore ignore: graham grrr this board is so easy to use that i did not notice i had switched between states

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 8 August 2002 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

so this is where you're all hiding. nice work Graham! all my glitch queries already addressed but one (unless i missed it): is anyone else getting a grey background in netscape? bit gloomy and hard on the eyes after awhile (or is that normal? greenspun was always black type on white for me. maybe there's a way to change the settings on my end?). looks right in IE but that crashes on me all the time and gives me no peace.

also midway up this thread apostrophes (Graham's and mark's only?) are appearing with frontslashes before them in both browsers. is THAT just me? ha i am already well out of my tech-depth. very impressive so far otherwise, thank you.

The Actual Mr. Jones (actual), Thursday, 8 August 2002 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark: Show extras shows everything, the checkboxes choose what shows all of the time.

Actual: Blimey, Netscape still defaults to a grey background? I've forced everything to black and white now, anyway. That apostrophe thing was a horrid glitch I fixed this afternoon, but the apostrophes are saved with the messages now.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 8 August 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

It's white now Graham hooray!

The Actual Mr. Jones (actual), Friday, 9 August 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
such a wonderful thread title

ron (ron), Monday, 11 November 2002 06:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The last time I said the phrase that titles this thread I was... oh.

nevermind.
