Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

Fudge Tunnel would have been my vote in a BEST poll

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

At the time I was definitely most into Therapy?, but their music sounds kind of tame now. I've got a soft spot for Dub War and Senser - both incorporated unusual influences and both put on a great live show.

Inevitable stupid dubstep mix (chap), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

Fudge Tunnel are a bit too metal.

Inevitable stupid dubstep mix (chap), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

i liked senser (1st album) have a few 7" singles too

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

listening again to the only song of any of these bands i know, 'waydown' by catherine wheel. not-a so good.

goole, Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

I found myself listening to Senser the other day thinking they surely had a track for the "90s songs to mention computers and/or the internet" thread. They were not as bad as their reputation but certainly not as amazing as I thought they were when I was 15. Also their lyrics are such a sea of bubbling free-association shite that even the song which does have a little rant about the people all being, like, just numbers on the government's computers, maaan, couldn't go on the thread because it would've taken too much explaining.

dimension hatris (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:21 (fifteen years ago)

I have seen live:
Almighty
Headswim
Kerbdog
King Prawn
Paradise Lost
Pitchshifter
Skunk Anansie
Symposium
Terrorvision
Therapy?
Wildhearts

And Dub War, who I've only gone and bleeding left out.

Pledge: A Tribute to Kerbdog’ is a tribute to album to Irish rock band Kerbdog. Despite splitting up in 1998 and only recording two albums, the band has influenced many present day bands. This album mixes up and coming rock bands with more established acts such as Frank Turner, Jamie Lenman (Reuben) and Dave McPherson (InMe). The album also features sleeve notes from legendary producers Jack Endino and GGGarth Richardson who worked on Kerbdog’s two albums. Furthermore, the album also contains notes from Kerbdog’s Cormac Battle, Simon Young (Kerrang), Ken McGrath (Rock Sound), Edwin McFee (NME & Alternative Ulster).

Well then!

dimension hatris (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

don't think they should be on this poll but voted Leatherface

Jari Litmandem (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:28 (fifteen years ago)

I have seen live :

A (supporting The Jesus Lizard)
Catherine Wheel
Compulsion
Feeder (also supporting the Jesus Lizard on the same bill as A, grim)
Headswim
Leatherface
Senseless Things
Senser
Skunk Anansie (supporting Come, of all bands)
Skyscraper
Therapy?

Satantango! (Matt #2), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:29 (fifteen years ago)

Leatherface shouldn't be here and their Mush is by far the best album by
any of these bands.

reallysmoothmusic (Jamie_ATP), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:32 (fifteen years ago)

Skunk Anansie (supporting Come, of all bands)

I saw them supporting Killing Joke, of all bands

Inevitable stupid dubstep mix (chap), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

next best probably Therapy - Troublegum.
very teenage and a bit dated but probably the best
example of Pop-Rock ever. Its mega pop. And Rocks. POP ROCK.

reallysmoothmusic (Jamie_ATP), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:33 (fifteen years ago)

I have only seen:

Senseless Things - not mad keen on them, but 'Too Much Kissing' was a sweet song
Therapy? - saw them once early on, supporting the Moving Targets or Bitch Magnet or some similar US band. Was okay, bought the single off the band
Skunk Anansie - supporting Come at the Underworld yay!

ka£ka (NickB), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

Therapy?

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

First time I saw Therapy? was when they were on Wiiija and associated vaguely with Silverfish, Th' Faith Healers and those bands, wasn't it called Camden Lurch? They seemed far better than their contemporaries (i.e. they could play) but they pretty swiftly shed the Big Black / Jesus Lizard influences and moved into the popular "fraggle rock" genre, and started to suck big time.

I know a guy who has a Therapy? tattoo, the fool.

Satantango! (Matt #2), Thursday, 24 February 2011 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

1st 2 eps and album (nurse) therapy? were awesome. Troublegum was pretty good and everything after was shit (esp infernal love)
The Wildhearts i saw many times live and were great apart from the last time i saw them where they played songs from their most recent at the time shitty album and ginger just abused the crowd and walked off after less than an hour. never cared for them since.

the 2 best bands by far on this poll though.

I do like Senser & Senseless Things though

Still have a soft spot for Trailer by Ash, though it isn't hard rock at all. Owned stuff by Compulsion and Senseless Things. Would find it much easier to vote for worst.

Never liked Pitch Shifter or Fudge Tunnel but growing up in Nottingham you get a bit protective of them anyway.

emil.y, Friday, 25 February 2011 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

mush by leatherface is as fine a rock album as the UK produced in the 90s. unreal great IMO.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 25 February 2011 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Following the group’s split, Daniel Glendining formed a new band, BlackCar, essentially a solo project with occasional contributions from other musicians. He also composed the instrumental film score for Lindy Heymann’s 2010 low-budget British film, Kicks[3]. Tom Glendining also plays drums for BlackCar, dividing his time between the group and another band, The Tenebrous Liar[4]. Nick Watts now works as a graphic designer, but is still involved in the music business as he plays keyboards for the Danish alternative rock band Mew when they are on tour[5].

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

were better as Pitch Shifter

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 26 February 2011 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

well in spirit I'm voting for Pitch Shifter.

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Saturday, 26 February 2011 03:13 (fifteen years ago)

Pitch Shifter was too metal for this poll along with the far superior Fudge Tunnel.

System, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

i bet ilms indie ex kids will vote senseless things because of their early stuff

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 13:07 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I did buy the first EP and the first couple of singles when they came out. Was really into the Replacements at the time, and they were one of the few UK bands in those days that had that sort of sound. John Peel played them quite a bit iirc.

ka£ka (NickB), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

The early stuff is closer to melodic hardcore than indie, it's the mid-period you want for that.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

yeah well its too much kissing will get the votes here (i love that stuff and totally regret selling my 2xCD with it on it, but its not what this poll is about) but i love empire of the senseless which does count. But im voting wildhearts for the 1st album. 1st 2 therapy? eps & albums ran it close but infernal love was such a fall off and major disappointment it killed them for me

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I meant early Replacements btw. xp

ka£ka (NickB), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

I have a very rare copy of "Andii in a Karmann", and it's a (would have been a) fine mini-album.

Also got the artwork for it as well, so woo go me.

Voted Ash, for personal, but the Senseless things were that rare thing, saw them supporting the reformed Buzzcocks, they impressed.

Mark G, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 14:11 (fifteen years ago)

i loved senseless things.

the early singles, the albums etc just hit the spot for me (not so much the bands final album if i'm honest).

summary : when jamie h stopped drawing the covers they lost some of the appeal for me, as they seemed to want to become serious.

also loved compulsion.
live they were fantastic.
some of the records matched the live action, and the final album, (future is medium), is a bit of a lost classic.
they introduced electronics to the bands sound (signs that garrett was 'becoming' jacknife lee), and really fine tuned their songs into major earworms.

of course it should be said that i saw compulsion several times during '94-'96 when i was in my last throws of indiedom/student daze, so both these bands were probably the last guitar based bands i really fell in line with due to some longing for more nights of misspent freedom (the scary world of parenting loomed on the horizon when i last saw compulsion @ reading '96)

mark e, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 14:39 (fifteen years ago)

i miss that double cd now

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 15:18 (fifteen years ago)

something i've always noticed about early/mid-90s 'Volume' mag-era Britrock is that they had an abundance of really really horrible covers. By the time I'd got round to buying CDs on a regular basis, the sale rack at my local indie was chocka with bands called things like Trud whose album art invariably featured a rotting potato with a man's face on it or a de-limbed children's toy doll.
