In Praise of : Albums with Three Tracks per side (i.e. 6 tracks)

So, double albums don't count...

i.e. The entirety of the album has six tracks, three per side for old fashioned LPs.

Because, come to think of it (as I did yesterday), although at first glance it seems to be stimping on the song-writing effort, it's harder to make that quantity of 'medium-length' songs...

The Move "Shazam", one of my favourite all time albums, three per side, some with added-on instrumentals, and some not.

Wizzard's "Wizzard Brew", cheating at one point as one track is a two-song medley but hey, and a short marching band track to finish side 1.

And, of course, "Station to Station" DavidBowie, as was...

Rush - A Farewell to Kings

ciderpress, Monday, 28 February 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

Stimping, yeah, only writing three songs and calling that a years work (which was my initial thought regarding the Bowie album, and actually one of those is a cover)...

But actually, I wrong.

Mark G, Monday, 28 February 2011 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, that should be six songs, obv.

Master Of Reality wins this although they cheat a bit by naming two of the little instrumental bits

Parliament - Funkentelechy vs. The Placebo Syndrome
Do 10" records count? The Fall - Slates
Cave - Psychic Psummer
I think that three songs per side is a very nice distribution.

Trip Maker, Monday, 28 February 2011 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

10" records count, especially if it's "Slates"

As long as they go 33rpm.

xpost: Lots of those are really EPs, though. I was going to nominate Oh-OK's "Furthermore What" until I realized it's about 8 minutes per side.

Hodge Podge Bodge, Peo-PLE! (Dan Peterson), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'd love to accept "Quirk-out" but it wouldn't be right to.

Devo - Dev-o Live and b-stiff

Funnily enough, there is a "Various Artists" Stiff promo where their acts all do versions of "Be Stiff", for the most part like it's a really lousy idea lets do awful versions. Suffice to say, it's great.

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 March 2011 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

FWIW Quirk Out spent 26 weeks in the UK indie album chart.

I can think of a number of applicable live albums but (as with Mark's "Songs that CLOSE the album" thread) refused to consider them.
