Fans using the following should have their mouths washed out with carbolic soap - for artists to use it OF THEMSELVES is a beheading offence I think. Three for starters:

The Modfather
Van "The Man"
The Lizard King

surely there are many more....

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 29 August 2002 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hardest Working Man In Show Business
Old Blue Eyes
The Velvet Fog
Lady Day
The Man In Black
Slowhand

Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Thursday, 29 August 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Hardest Working Man In Show Business"
But he is! Or was for a while. "Mr. Dynamite" is cooler though.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 29 August 2002 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Maddy, Jacko, Macca...

Jody Beth Rosen, Thursday, 29 August 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry Derek, but I think Tom's suggestions are good (ie crap, especially The Modfather, shudder) and yours crap (ie at least decent... except Old Blue Eyes, I guess.)

The Boss. Urgh. Start singing songs from the perspective of a boss, Bruce, and I might reconsider.

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 29 August 2002 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The King

Zimmy

I like "Zimmy"! Although I wish more rockcrits would refer to him as "Elston Gunn."

Jody Beth Rosen, Friday, 30 August 2002 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Jim Morrison.

Matt C., Friday, 30 August 2002 04:18 (twenty-three years ago)

'Modfather' is one of my favourite words of all time.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 30 August 2002 05:28 (twenty-three years ago)

''The Lizard King''

I haf to argue with this one. The lizard King is great! It sounds as if he is the head of a religious cult (a good thing).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 30 August 2002 05:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"G.O.A.T."

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 30 August 2002 05:51 (twenty-three years ago)

This one will top them all in the retch-factor:

J-LO

*searches for a bucket*

Derek Dalek (Derek Dalek), Friday, 30 August 2002 09:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Doesn't she actually use that as an artist name though?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 30 August 2002 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Grungemeister, for sure

Grandaddy of Grunge?

kiwi, Friday, 30 August 2002 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

AFKAP!! Tho actually I quite like this, in acronym form. All Beatles-type "elegant variation" is to be abominated. When I see "the Velvet Fog" I read "the Velvet Frog", which is top obv.

My theory abt the obnoxiousness herein: it projects a fond chumminess between fan and star, based entirely on the fact that fan pronounces star's work to be Deeply Important, when actually star very likely has great contempt for fan's grasp of what matters abt his/her work. The relationship between givers and receivers in art shd be presented as it truly is: deeply antagonistic, anxious, resentful.

mark s (mark s), Friday, 30 August 2002 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

This is why the only good rock nickname is 'Dame' David Bowie.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 30 August 2002 09:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Mats" = argh!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 30 August 2002 10:10 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, gary numan used to be referred to as the "fat white slug" (tho admittedly not by ALL his fans)

the smash hits school of nicknaming respects the antagonism fairly precisely: the bitchiness in camp is obviously sometimes a bit routinised, but it has at least been brought to the picnic

mark s (mark s), Friday, 30 August 2002 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Chairman of the Board
The Thin White Duke
..
A local critic made up a good nickname for Lenny Kravitz, though: "Jive" .

dave (Dave225), Friday, 30 August 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

no way! these are mostly way better than actual names and as mark points up it's a good way to joke about the whole fan's projecting their "issues" on artistes, especially "The Boss" because he's trying so hard to say 'I Am Joe Lunchbox Just Like You', to which the fans reply 'Noooo! You're The Boss! You're The Boss!' & Jacko, Madge & Mozz are good fuck yous. The Hardest Working Man in Showbidness is just a statement of fact (as was The Ox) but other 'Respect!' names like The Modfather and The 12 Foot Lizard King are indeed lame-o.

Van The Man stinks on another level though, just cause it's so obv. like anybody named Van would get 'Hey! It's Van The Man!' all the time so who cares. Same for Macca, maybe.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 August 2002 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

P.Diddy must die.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 30 August 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

All puns on the order of "Yoko? Oh no!" must go.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 30 August 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

You guys are grumpy.

Are there any acceptable nicknames? Or is the entire concept of nicknaming an artist or band, vis-a-vis the whole fans-as-fake-chums thing, worthy of endless bile? I personally don't see the harm.

wl, Friday, 30 August 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm suprised no-one has mentioned "His Bobness", as used by thee wrtched "Q" magazine to describe their idol Bob Dylan. "His Bobness". Ugh.

N0RM4N PH4Y, Friday, 30 August 2002 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

His Bobness is the Smash Hits thing rotted from inside.

I would love NYLPM to have a nickname style guide.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 30 August 2002 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

iggy (pop)' (gg allin, gg cummings, guru guru, ghost, gories and grandmothers);

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 31 August 2002 02:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Ian Astbury out of the Cult will always be 'wolfchild' to me.

But, like him though I do (sporadically), 'Archdrude' Julian Cope might stink a bit.

g bear, Saturday, 31 August 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

in new zealand we have the cf:subpop morphic resonance of 'the losers'

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 31 August 2002 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)
