"dawn chorus" just slays me

"Julie & Candy" for me- it feels like it hits the right balance between melody ("Dawn Chorus") and overt menace ("1969").

1969 by a mile.

Yeah tough poll. One of those albums I've listened to a lot and still feel as though I haven't even scraped the surface of. It's sequenced in a really weird way - I'm not all that sure how it ends, it kind of just peters out and then there's several minutes of silence.

Tempted to go with The Devil is in the Details, such a dark avant-hauntological ghost of a track amidst the yellowed polaroid tracks (which I also love)

Went back and listened to this album and there are surprisingly few standouts, the best of the best Boards of Canada ends up on the EPs I think.

The eps amd music has the right to children are way better than geogaddi.

Its still a BOC album, though, which is better than nothing.

I have a friend who loved making erratic analogies between BoC and life itself. He said that Music Has the Right, per example, evoked the innocence and curiosity of childhood, whereas Geogaddi was a much darker, confusing ordeal that could be related to puberty. Campfire Headphase would then be young adulthood, more serene and sober.

It doesnt make much sense, perhaps but, One thing's true about his theory, at least for me, though. MHTRTC makes me all giddy and nostalgic when I listen to it but I cant listen to certain Geogaddi tracks when I'm all by myself at night because they freak me out. There's something disorienting about this album.

Seeing the listing reminded me how much I still love this album, got to put it back on my player for morning walks. Comes down to 1969, YCFTS, Alpha & Omega but I think Music is Math just edges it for me - the main melody line using that ghostly choral voice never gets old.

In full support of all the interludes and snippets on this too, crucial to that vibe you mention, dog latin. Can't remember which review it was but recall a terrific description of Opening the Mouth as being like "a heavy breathing call from a banshee".

BoC are still my favourite electronic musicians by some distance, more excited for the new one than anything else this year.

Anyway like people have already said, this is the kind of album where picking winners is a bit besides the point. Any of the In a Beautiful Place track would prob win this poll, yet Geodaddi just seems bound to remain this thing, their masterwork.

Alpha & Omega makes me wish I could muster the time, skills and effort to make a YT clip for it exclusively using footage from Logan's Run.

'Julie & Candy' was my favourite when this first came out but I'm going to have to relisten the whole thing before I vote, I can't remember which songs are which in the second half.

'In the Annexe' is the creepiest track I think.

Was thinking of voting Sunshine Recorder but went with Music Is Math in the end. For a moment I seriously considered choosing Ready Let's Go, never tire of hearing that little intro. Geogaddi definitely has a "spooky" vibe to it, which I found off-putting at first, but the album does reward repeated listenings.

difficult, that album underwhelmed me when it came out. i had discovered boc just before via ilm. but this was not as magic as music has the right or some of the eps. they seem to be on autopilot. music is math is a strong contender but it is by no means a truly great song.

i've always found Gyroscope beguilingly creeeeepy - it is the sound of a nightmare you might actually be enjoying & not want to wake from. Recently, it was employed appropriately as background music in the horror film Sinister (not that the movie itself was that great, but that aspect of it was).

true, but imo DC is at the very top of the heap (along w/ maybe a few early M83 tracks & some Kompact stuff) of the early-00s electronic nu-MBV thing - definitely superior to what Shields himself turned in for the Lost in Translation soundtrack.

This is way better than Music Has The Right To Children, which had the edge on beats, but Geogaddi is way out in front on melodies and overall ambiance.

The Beach at Redpoint still does it for me, always thought it sounded like some soundtrack from Twin Peaks or a Micheal Mann movie. Really powerful track.
