I've got the A.R. Kane one and Tom Ze classics 4. I like them both. What other great bands has David Byrne "discovered"?

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 6 October 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

search: ar kane's americana comp

destory: ar kane's new clear child album.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 6 October 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh. Jess really did say it all right there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

David Byrne!

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Monday, 7 October 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

(search him, baby)

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Monday, 7 October 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Or Destroy him, preferably. Ok, I'll do it.

The first Brazil Classics album was pretty good; I got the much-lauded Os Mutantes comp, and thought it was pretty poor. I've never gotten around to trading it, though.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 7 October 2002 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

best of Os Mutantes comp on Luaka Bop is amazing, but I'd alos point you in the direction of the Os Mutantes reissues on Omplatten. The Tom Ze "Fabricacion Defect" album is amazing too.

Yes, "New Clear Child" did suck. But I'll never forget seeing AR Kane play to about 40 people in support of it a small space and it was one of the most fucking AMAZING live sets I've ever seen. They did all the synthy parts on the record with just their two guitars feedbacking and sounding JUST LIKE SYNTH PARTS. Plus they did all the 4AD stuff, some of "69" and lots of "I". I wish I had bootleg taped that sucker. damn...

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 7 October 2002 02:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: That Shuggie Otis reissue. I also like the second Geggy Tah album, but pretty much everyone else seems to hate it so never mind. But definitely search Shuggie Otis.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 7 October 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought there was a good song on New Clear Child, but then I listened to it, and "Motel Gather" is only OK. There's a cool little guitar harmonics lick thing, but otherwise that album is a big fat dud. This despite its sounding pretty much like your standard-issue mind-blowing A.R.Kane record. I guess there's just not much in the way of tunes...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 7 October 2002 04:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Though I haven't listened to everything on it, I have yet to be disappointed by anything on Luaka Bop.
Particular faves at present:
Susana Baca - great Afro-Peruvian singer, funky percussion amazing voice.
Los de Abajo - Mexican-punk-polka. Saw them live last year (and got to meet D. Byrne) and they were huge amounts of fun.
SiSe- NYC based sort of chilledout latin based electronica. Carol C. the singer has a beautifiul voice and they do a nice cover of Oran Juice Jones' "The Rain"

Obv. the problem with New Clear Child is that it does not sound *at all* like your standard-issue mind-blowing A.R. Kane record.

Brazil Classics Vol 1 is one of those CDs that secondhand shops refuse to take off my hands. However, it does contain some lovely stuff, notably a couple of fantastic Caetano Veloso tracks featuring little kiddiwinkies singing and spot-on whistling to make Roger Whittaker cry in his beard. There are other good tracks too, and I'm relieved nobody would take it off my hands. The Shuggie Otis one is good too, but not as good as I would like it to be.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 7 October 2002 08:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll second Shuggie Otis and throw in the Jim White albums. DB's last solo album was really good and had a lot of layers. Also search: the Luaka Bop logo, which is my favorite logo.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i forgot Cornershop earlier, and there is Waldemar Bastos, Zap Mama and more

unlike Real world (other celeb owned label) which can be v. hit or miss I think LBop is a very strong label. The more I think 'bout it the more impressed I am by the overall quality

H (Heruy), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're going to compare the two labels then LBop generally succeeds a bit more because the roster is a lot smaller. They haven't released all that much in comparison, whereas there seem to be endless RealWorld releases that I want to like but don't feel all that strongly about. Didn't mind when I was on their promo list, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite like the new Blip Hop compilation; Susana Baca is nice but only for certain occasions. The Cuban comps were iffy. I liked the Afro-Peru comp as well as Dance Raja Dance. Shuggie Otis is laughably overrated.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 7 October 2002 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

search: Los Amigos Invisibles - The New Sound Of The Venezuelan Gozadera
sexed up disco amigos singing all sorts of dirty things en espanol. but honestly, they are a really great, tight, inventive band, fun live, and the record holds together really well as an album, far far beyond its novelty value.

destroy: the 2nd Los Amigos album. just pales too much in comparison, they said it all with the first.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 7 October 2002 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Forget about Suggie Otis. Asia Classics 2: Shoukichi Kina has some good songs on it, though some of them make me slightly queasy for some reason. ("Okay boys, who cut the J-Pop with digestive distress subliminals?") "Haisai Ojisan" is worth the price of admission, if you can pick this up used and in good condition somewhere for cheap.

I actually prefer the version of "Subete No Hito No Kokoro Ni Hanna O" that Tarika Sammy contributed to "A World Out of Time" (a compilation of music from Madagascar). It seems more agonized.

I know next to nothing about Japanese pop music, incidentally.

That Tropicalia CD is okay, but I really don't listen to most of it.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:05 (twenty-three years ago)

That Madagascar comp. is not on Luaka Bop, incidentally.

Cornershop are overrated.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I never listen to "World Out of Time" (Shanachie) but I just left it on after playing that "Hanna" song. I don't especially like this CD, overall, but I'm interested to notice how much some of this reminds me of Colombian music. Not exactly, but kind of.

Sorry, that's a bit irrelevant.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

The Brazil comp with the ass on the cover is great.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Shuggie Otis is laughably overrated.

Come again? It's one of the most phenomenal psychedelicsoulfunkjoy albums I've heard in my life! A bazillion years ahead of its time and thus still sounds bloody wonderful today. And tomorrow. And the day after.

Believe!

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, Iu agree that it is related to the size but I think that is one of the strength of LBop, that they haven't tried to release everything but kept a tighter focus. That said I don't really complain when i get a big box of free CDs from Real World

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 06:16 (twenty-three years ago)

wasn't the first Jim White album on Lauka Bop? that is a wonderful record.

jon (jon), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 06:54 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
revive.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
David Byrne's got a thing going through some Luaka Bop releases and tracks on his radio. It's a pity he's no involved anymore. Glad they aren't dead though, some good stuff. I really enjoyed the Los Amigos Invisibles track (reminded me of dre's california love), putting The New Sound of the Venezualan Gozadera on my list.

Wish I was on somebody's promo list... I just need to find a new radio station/newsroom to hang around.

Major Alfonso (Major Alfonso), Sunday, 6 August 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Love Is A Real Thing is impossibly good

Domenico + 2 was disappointing -- Moreno + 2 had a really intriguing and new production style, but this just seems stagnant

Still haven't heard the new Tom Ze! Heard it's great, is this true?

people explosion (Sonny A.), Sunday, 6 August 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

"Love's a Real Thing" seconded. I've been playing it a lot again this summer.

The Ze is pretty killer, yeah.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 7 August 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

Domenico + 2 was about 40% good, but yeah, Moreno + 2 kills it. Isn't there supposed to be a third thing? Kassin, isn't that his name?

These Robust Cookies (Robust Cookies), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

"Love is a Real Thing" thirded

iirc they put out Soul of Black Peru also, which is almost as good.
