maybe this music is interesting enough which is why it doesnae get discussed too much (is it my imagination or has ILM retracted to a slightly less adventurous group mindset since move to ilxor)????

The only Upsilon Acrux that I've heard is the Dynamite with a Laser Beam comp, IIRC. I'll relisten to it and give you my opinion. Why not broaden the scope of this discussion to emcopass all of this new "Rock Duo" thing (Lightning Bolt, etc.)? (I assume Upsilon Acrux is a duo, too.)

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know enough about Upsilon Acrux (I liked the song on that 31G comp.), but I think Orthrelm--and Mick Barr's previous band, Crom-tech--are amazing. Mick's easily the best guitarist I have ever seen.

Diego Hadis (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I totally dig Crom Tech. Way fun.

Is it true Andrew WK has a song about Wolf Eyes?

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

It wouldn't surprise me. Wasn't he in that band The Pterodactyls with some of the members of Wolf Eyes?

And yeah, Crom-tech were special.

Diego Hadis (dhadis), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

where can i hear some crom tech - i cannae find a cd / mp3 anywhere (the again i am soooooo lazy...) ORTHRELM ARE THE FKN BOMB!

bob snoom, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

insound.com has stuff available to order and possibly download

I got a 12" so.... who knows about CD.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

hey - chiz 4 that. insound indeed - not come across that before.

bob snoom, Wednesday, 9 October 2002 09:34 (twenty-three years ago)

oh - if you like upsilon acrux in particular - see if you can hear some later period badgewearer (scots beefheartian politico poetry prog - punk). or powerdresser (more jazz-folky prog). from years back. hell, if ye that intertested you probably know anyway. what about HELLA? how do they sound in comparison? - i haven't crossed paths with their stuff yet

bob snoom, Wednesday, 9 October 2002 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm seeing HELLA on halloween!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 11:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Never seen them live, but Hella on record at least are unstoppable. That drummer is so sick!

Diego Hadis (dhadis), Thursday, 10 October 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

orthrelm live - one of the top five live shows of this year. it's like watching 'dueling banjos,' but with the shred-level turned up to 12.

maura (maura), Thursday, 10 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Mick's such a ridiculously good guitar player that I always start laughing when he plays. I just can't believe anyone can play with as much speed and fluidity as he does.

Diego Hadis (dhadis), Thursday, 10 October 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw only the last minuite of Orthrelm's set once, and it must of had about a 1000 notes in it, and the drums and guitar was right together (they must use some kind of telepathy)

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 10 October 2002 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the people and Wolf Eyes and Andrew WK are friends.

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 10 October 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

www.mp3.com/upsilonacrux

they're very good :)

nick lejejs, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

man, i got 2 crom-tech records in the post from insound yesterday, and Whoooaaaa!!! the drummer is more "rock steady" than in orthrelm & slightly less prog but man it still baffles me intensely like the best of those old caroliner records used to, and that's what getts me off!

bob snoom, Friday, 18 October 2002 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Upsilon Acrux, mmmm. So good I just played them on the ResonanceFM Other Rock show (and I wasnt the first).

Any more downloadable nice things out there, do tell us more.... Orthrelm web site? Other similar outfits? I'm getting greedy now.

Marinaorgan (Marina Organ), Saturday, 19 October 2002 00:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i just encountered hella's music - yeah they do the duo thing, and it's good, but leaning towards a more "traditional" don caballero / /rodan thing (without the shit bits) still kinda verse chorus verse middle8 type thing.
check the flying luttenbachers if you haven't already.
and the locust, and the first stretchheads album if you can find it, and harry pussy - 4ever! none of these particularly in comparison to upsilon acrux cos they're a bit more subtle / measured maybe - i still reckon the closest match is the last 3 badgewearer albums.

bob snoom, Saturday, 19 October 2002 09:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Lightning Bolt is the best of these bands.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Saturday, 19 October 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i won't belive that til i hear them . i know they 're the most popular, but then status quo (popular krautrock outfit) rock pretty hard too in a popular kinda way. aren't lightning bolt kinda like ruins without the annoying bits? (was it the annoying bits that MADE ruins?) educate me!

bob snoom, Saturday, 19 October 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
ok - so i'm now au fait w/ "the bolt" no they aren't "the best" (as above) - just a slightly more accessible duo than most - very good - don't get me wrong (chrissy hynde)certainly a lot of power/velocity & some rockin good grooves hapnin. but i really do still prefer the f.champs, orthrelm, the luttenbachers & hella. so tharsye go...MAN... that orthrem on the split with touchdown - now that's really something...
