cutting ties with clear channel

from a philadelphia concert promoter's announcement that one of their venues has been allowed to reopen after lots of hassles with the city's licenses and inspections board:

"Our friends at Jade Tree Records, who made some very tuff and important decisions once this happened. Once the church was shut down, they became one of the first labels to work against the large monopolistic industry machines (like clear channel) and began to no longer deal with any corporate owned venues, including moving their CMJ Showcase this year from the Clear Channel ran Irving Plaza to the independently ran club, Warsaw in New York City, making sure that independent and smaller businesses would survive, hopefully providing an example for other independent bands and labels. (note : other "punk" labels have yet to make such a bold move)"

do you think this'll have an effect at all? will other labels follow suit? jade tree has a lot of clout, but then, so does cc ...

Don't seeing it make a whit of difference in the larger sense of things.

If Pearl Jam as the reigning Biggest Band in Rock couldn't put a dent in Ticketmaster, then I don't think Jade Tree will do much against CC. The difference of scope in clout between Jade Tree and CC is gigantic.

yes every boycott ever is an abysmal failure for not being The-Revolution-all-at-once-hurrah and anyone who decides not to do business with clear channel is a delusional megalomaniac obv

Geez, that was pretty bitter. I know that these monolithic, entrenched interests can fall, but I'm just saying it won't be at the hands of Jade Tree. Kudos to them for doing what they can though.

Also, breathe!

Um, am I wrong in suspecting there's an element of grandstanding here? How many Jade Tree acts get played on Clear Channel stations? It's not exactly hard to find nightclub venues that aren't under the sway of Clear Channel.

Almost all of them get played now and then on at least one CC station in Orlando, FL. But it's limited to a 4-hour show on Saturday nights -- assuming it hasn't been pulled. I moved out of Florida just over a year ago.

haha sorry wl that did come off bitter-sounding. that's just my kneejerk response to "the larger sense of things" being trotted out as a measurement every time any overtly Indie (i.e. small-scale by design) action is taken, or gesture is made.

(NB I haf never knowingly heard a jade tree record. as for the press release itself - the implication that this label is the first to make such a "bold move" = pffft. and the attempt to juxtapose the scary "large monopolistic industry machines" with "CMJ Showcase"=hmm)

nevermind the grammatical problems; here's social revolution...

Hey, that's the R5 e-mail. I got one of those. It was really stupid what the city was trying to do.
One of my friends (an old roomate of that promoter) believes that it was people running the large monopoly owned venues that sent out the "complaints" in the first place. Too many people were going to R5 shows instead of shows at the Troc, TLA, or Electric Factory. It was an attempt at underhanded elimination of compition. It could have also been another independent promoter. I don't know If I really believe him, but it could be true.

i don't think the text implies that jade tree is on a battle against clear channel, but rather that they are trying to support an alternative structure, which is a very different thing.
and i also think it's a good move which should be an example for many other independent bands and labels and magazines. i'm not into the corporate=evil idea, but i think it's good to have the chance to decide who do you want to support, instead of having less and less choices.
