For Alto

punt cased (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:14 (twelve years ago)

Slight error: Chrome album says 1980 but it was actually released 1979.

Moka, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:27 (twelve years ago)

Cool list, some of my favourite non-mainstream sounds of the decade up there.

Debris for me.

Secos & Molhados. Love that album to pieces.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 04:33 (twelve years ago)

Thanks for choosing Tusk, because it means I don't have to pick Fleetwood Mac and can move through the list for other things. (If it had been Rumours, I would've have no choice.)

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 04:57 (twelve years ago)

So happy to see a Secos & Molhados fan! You forgot to vote for them on the best of the century poll that we ran over here two or three years ago! I was the only vote for that album iirc.

Johnny you don't like Tusk? I adore Rumours (it cointains 'Never Going Back Again' which is one of my top 5 songs from them) but when doing these sort of lists I limit myself to one album per artist. I love Tusk slightly above Rumours... somehow I thought it was also the FM album everyone in here loved above the rest.

Moka, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 06:18 (twelve years ago)

Tusk is good. I don't love it like I love Rumours, though.

Great list Moka. Loads for me to check out. I voted the Congos

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:20 (twelve years ago)

Moka - I don't think I voted in that poll. If I did I have no recollection.

The two self-titled records and Ney Matagrosso's solo debut are all-timers in my book. This clip alone!

Emil.y hasnt commented on this poll but I want to thank her for introoducing me to the Ann Steel album on the collaborative playlist radio thing. It was recently reissued as Roberto Cacciaplagia who is the composer behind the album rather than Ann Steel I guess in the 70s they thought it would be more marketable to have a woman fronting the record.

Moka, Thursday, 19 September 2013 15:56 (twelve years ago)

EZ for the longest time I only had mp3s of them and always thought Ney was a woman. I was shocked when I finally saw videos of them performing live and found out he is in fact a man and he sings equally great live.

Moka, Thursday, 19 September 2013 15:59 (twelve years ago)

Actually that very video you posted was the first and it's amazing.

Moka, Thursday, 19 September 2013 16:00 (twelve years ago)

I had heard about them before hearing them so knew a bit about Ney and his amazing voice. Still didn't prepare me for what that voice truly was. Clips of him live even today are mind-blowing. Well into his 60s he was till pulling off the bare chested sinuous thing without to much trouble.

one month passes...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 10 November 2013 00:01 (twelve years ago)

Ah I didn't realise there were more of these polls! For me it's between:

Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda (1971)
Brigitte Fontaine & Art Ensemble of Chicago - Comme à la radio (1970)
Can - Ege Bamyasi (1972)
The Congos - Heart of The Congos (1977)
Elis Regina & Antônio Carlos Jobim - Elis & Tom (1974)
Fela Kuti - Expensive Shit (1975)
Jorge Ben - A tábua de esmeralda (1974)

What are these? Obv RDB is a Bollywood guy with 5000 albums but what's special about Sholay?

Min Bul - Min Bul (1970)
Rahul Dev Burman - Sholay (1975)

famous for hits! (seandalai), Sunday, 10 November 2013 01:42 (twelve years ago)

I've only heard 24 of these records, so I can't say on the whole list. For the lesser known, that Larry Young record is really good. I got that one. I probably listened to Raw Power the most out of any on the list. Expensive Shit and Heart of the congos are the two I heard for the first time the latest date. I'd probably split my favorites all time between Ege Bamyasi and Entertainment.

earlnash, Sunday, 10 November 2013 01:56 (twelve years ago)

I only know about half the stuff on this list, so lots to check out. That Secos & Molhados-clip is great! Thanks Moka and EZ.

Voted Tusk. A bit safe, but it holds a special place in my heart. Out of the stuff I've heard, most of this is amazing though.

I don't really know half of these, though.

One Trick Over-Painted Pony (soref), Sunday, 10 November 2013 19:20 (twelve years ago)

What are these? Obv RDB is a Bollywood guy with 5000 albums but what's special about Sholay?

Min Bul - Min Bul (1970)
Rahul Dev Burman - Sholay (1975)

― famous for hits! (seandalai)

No actual reason for picking Sholay over the rest of his discography (which of course I've only heard about 5% of), it's a manner of personal preference as it includes some of my favorite songs by him (including mehbooba mehbooba which is actually a Demis Roussos rip-off) and I'm in love with the odd arrangements for the songs. For Burman you could probably do better by listening to any compilation first.

The Min Bul record is short but amazing! Somewhere in between freejazz and krautrock. Terje Rypdal plays guitar on this one but the actual highlight for me comes from the bass and drums. I think you can find the record on spotify but here's a youtube sample if you're interested.
