I get all my mates to do the focus group anyway so this never happens to me. People who don't write/think much about pop are completely ace for recommending things though.

i seem to take no-one's opinion on music seriously unless they obssess about it on a level thats at least on par with my own, which is only intermediate in itself really....oh dear...

hah - in Glasgow in the late '70s, carrying a copy of "Spiritual Unity" under one's arm was not a hip thing for a lad to do, take my word for it! (not to mention all the Sun Ra Impulse cutouts with gatefold hand-coloured sleeves I got out of Listen Records in Renfield Street at 49p a throw round about that time)
