New Apples in Stereo-What Say You?

During their current tour, they are largely playing selections from The Velocity of Sound and I can't help but think "power pop" through and through. Perhaps it's quirky, but I prefer their fare on Her Wallpaper Reverie and songs like "Look Away" and "Silver Chain" to what they seem to be doing now. What do you think of the new album? Loathe it? Prefer it? Indifferent?

never heard the album, never want to. saw them w/clinic (who were great, but need to lose the get-up). a.i.s. were so bad. i've enjoyed their previous albums, this was awful. i think that pavement line about geddy lee should be changed to the guy from apples in stereo. and the music was boring 70s power pop.

i liked them best when they were blatantly ripping off the byrds or lucy in the sky

JasonD, Monday, 14 October 2002 07:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Like it alot. I think the 'power-pop' angle suits them bettter but then I was getting a little bored with the sixties thing anyway. LOVE the cover of VOS (don't know why ...).

Guy Flower, Monday, 14 October 2002 07:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard it yet - didn't know it existed, but surely they started off as power-pop in the first place. If there's anything to compare with Tidal Wave & Running in Circles, that's good enough for me. I thought their '60s thing was a bit wishy-washy (with the exception of Tone Soul...great) & the later stuff hit & miss (Ruby sounds like Ben Folds).

I'll try & find some MP3s

Jez (Jez), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the new record. It's still very much the Apples, but without all of the studio trickery.28 minutes of power pop riffing.I too just saw them open for Clinic, and they rocked. They looked like they were really enjoying themselves.
Clinic sounded great, but as JasonD said they do "need to lose the get-up".

It's the best new album of the year, sez I. I've always been a sucker for loud and often snotty melodic pop music, which is probably why I've always had a thing for Superchunk; this new album is like Superchunk in a lot of places, but with a higher pitched voice in better tune. When I first heard the album I thought it was okay, but with repeated listens, damned if all of those songs haven't gotten permanently lodged in my head. The other thing about the album that I find really nice is that they seem to have loaded most of the best songs at the END of the album, which you don't see much...pretty much everything from "I Want" through to the end is brilliant, and "She's Telling Lies" is a beautiful way to end. ("She's a little girl who works at Dairy Queen!" is such a great thing to sing, but I can't explain why.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 14 October 2002 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Roxxx. They're indulging their .38 Special impulses, but I can't say I mind a bit.

Douglas, Monday, 14 October 2002 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

.38 Special, Doug? How do you get that?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 14 October 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad I didn't buy it for £15 in HMV if it's only 28 mins. Might get it if I see it cheaper, was very disappointed by everything they did post tone soul.

i am glad they moved from denver to kentucky, now they won't be playing with all the bands i actually want to see. robert schneider is a nice guy though. the new of montreal cd is much better than the apples record.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 14 October 2002 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I almost saw them tonight actually, with Clinic. I decided not though, saving my money for the Wilco show at the end of the month.

... Apples in Stereo are a great band, and yep, Her Wall Paper Reverie does rock, especially the video-game noise interludes. I havent heard the new albums... the newest thing Ive heard of theirs was that Powerpuff Girls song (also, the Frank Black song on that CD kicked it up a notch).

But I swear to you here and now, I will see a show by a member of the Elephant 5 collective before I die.

David Allen, Monday, 14 October 2002 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Make that Elephant 6, and tally one up in the retard column for me.

David Allen, Monday, 14 October 2002 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a very very garage-rock album, like the Beach Boys all trashed up, and it's good. (.38 Special?!) beware the concerts though: they're one of the worst live bands on the planet

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 14 October 2002 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, my friend saw them last night (the show I couldve gone to), and said he loved them. More then Clinic actually. (Said Clinic plays their stuff WAY differently live then it is on the CD)

1. "The Code"
2. "Dream About the Future"
3. "Hey Elevator"
4. "Strange Solar System"
5. "Dance Floor"
6. "C.P.U."
7. "No One in the World"
8. "Dignified Dignitary"
9. "No Vacation"
10. "Told You Once"
11. "It's All Right"
12. "Next Year at About the Same Time"
13. "Floating in Space"
14. "Nobody But You"
15. "Wings Away"
16. "Time Pilot"

The record is set to feature 16 tracks of what Schneider calls "retro-futuristic super-pop," full of piano, vocoder vocals and electronic sounds. It also features 'C.P.U.,' the first pop tune built around his non-Pythagorean musical scale.

"I wanted to make a futuristic pop record, to reach out to the kids of the future," Schneider said in a press release. "It is what I imagine their more highly-evolved pop might sound like: shiny soul music with robots and humans singing together, yet informed by the music of our time. So we are sending a pop music message through time, hoping they will decode it and be into it."

the cover is kind of ugly

lukevalentine, Sunday, 31 January 2010 08:35 (sixteen years ago)

Ugly cover, but I am very anxious to hear this!

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 31 January 2010 23:46 (sixteen years ago)

I thought New Magnetic Wonder was bloody great & really underrated by most

lukevalentine, Sunday, 31 January 2010 23:52 (sixteen years ago)

one month passes...

It's leaked.

This may very well be the best album that E.L.O. never released.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 3 March 2010 06:33 (sixteen years ago)

Seriously... I'll bet if you slipped this in on a mix tape with A New World Record no one would know

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 3 March 2010 06:34 (sixteen years ago)

Actually, let me re-qualify that... Every song is like a different E.L.O. album.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 3 March 2010 06:37 (sixteen years ago)

New Magnetic Wonder also sounded like ELO, and it was their best record. How are the songs?
