The Outlaws, Joe Meek-produced backing band for Mike Berry, was the starting point in the careers of both Chas Hodges of cheerful Cockney Spurs-supporting duo Chas 'n' Dave and the ever so slightly rockier Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple and Rainbow!

What are your favourite e.g.s of artists whose first band was very different from their later, greater recording successes?

Geir Jenssen, first in Bel Campo, and now much, much more interesting as Biosphere.

It has to be a previous band and not a project under the same name, eh? Because if the latter was allowed I'd pony up both Ministry and My Bloody Valentine.

Tripping Daisy then Polyphonic Spree -- okay, they're not terribly different but I was quite thrown when I found out Tim DeLaughter fronted both bands.

Buster Poindexter (of "Hot Hot Hot" fame), AKA David Johannsen of New York Dolls. I have such a hard time believing this.

That Psychedelic Group that Kenny Rogers was in. Ditto Ted Nugent.

If we can't have the same name, Underworld are out. The drummer out of punk act the Stupids became Klute. Chic were a rock act at first (I've never heard them - I don't think there were any recordings, were there?).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 14 October 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Black Sabbath as an English folk band.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 14 October 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Jack White guitarist of the White Stripes aka Jack "Doc" Gillis the drummer of Goober and the Peas

David Jones of Feathers fame aka David Bowie

Mark Feld aka Marc Bolan guitarist of John Children aka guitarist for T. Rex

the list goes on...
