Thanks to my rave review of the Beth Gibbons solo album for Uncut I now have two tickets to go and see her at Shepherds Bush Empire tomorrow evening (Wed 16th). Anyone interested in coming with me and using up the other ticket? She is due onstage at about 9:00.

Oh and by the way, no injuries from my bus accident this morning, just a couple of rather sore bruises, so I should be OK for the Thursday meet-up.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 09:43 (twenty-three years ago)

You drive a bus now too? ;-) Seriously, I'm glad to hear you're okay. See you Thursday.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Still no takers! Surely someone must be interested?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I *would* Marcello, but I am otherwise booked (very boring reasons which I won't go into here). Prob. see you on Thursday

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 07:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Clearly no one does :-(

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I would have if I lived close, I think 'Out of Season' is outstanding!

kinski (kinski), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Did she charm?

Gig review now on CoM.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 17 October 2002 09:08 (twenty-three years ago)

sounds like it was a stunning show. ive been really enjoying the album lately, it glows and mourns unlike anything i've heard lately. I always favored the less intrusive portishead stuff anyhow.

Honda, Thursday, 17 October 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I really must inverstigate this album. This month's Mojo reckons it's among the best albums ever made. And of course our Marcello thinks it's something special which is good enough for me.

one year passes...
: - (

Sigh I wish I would have joined ILX earlier. I would have went. Am listening to this album tonight and am thinking that it's hushed beauty makes it dunno - so f'ing devasting like a folk-rock version of Joy Division's Closer.

Anybody have any news of Beth Gibbons - as-of-late?

Jimmy the Saint (Jimmy the Saint), Saturday, 31 January 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Tom the Model" makes the best use of Simone's "Do What You Got To Do" but makes it *more* heartbreaking. I've gone all emo over this album - fits the rainy day end of January watching the wind and black on black clouds from the flat.

I wonder if Marcello got anyone to go with him.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 1 February 2024 14:23 (two years ago)

Rustin Man is great but her version of Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs is often slept on. Sometimes I prefer it to the canonical Dawn Upshaw version because she sounds more raw and untutored than Upshaw.

ufo, Wednesday, 15 May 2024 22:32 (two years ago)

omg this album

the brooding chamber-pop/art-rock opus vibe is exactly what I had hoped for

Tim F, Thursday, 16 May 2024 21:21 (two years ago)

yeah it's wonderful

ufo, Friday, 17 May 2024 00:14 (two years ago)

AOTY candidate for sure. I guess Beth had more to do with the music on Third than I thought; a lot of this is the same vibe.

this interview: https://www.soundonsound.com/people/adrian-utley-recording-third is by far the most comprehensive thing that exists on their creative process while making third

moar like beth GOATbons amirite

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Monday, 24 June 2024 16:51 (one year ago)

also for serious: lives outgrown is very good after one listen, but holy heckfire is it a tough listen. not because of atonality or challenging sounds, just lots of deep emotions that are hard for me to sit with for the length of time that some of the material is asking of me. i was posting on Beth Gibbons & Rustin' Man - Out Of Season but will defer to this as the proper bg topic.

really fun to see her doing portishead material. big sigh. she's f'kn rad.

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Monday, 24 June 2024 17:03 (one year ago)

I've probably posted this before but Beth Gibbons is the only "popstar" I've ever had a dream about. She was running after me at National Trust property Quarry Bank Mill. I've never worked out a good interpretation of this.
