Seriously, my cold is getting worse by the hour and I feel really woozy and I have shitloads to do. What music should I put on? My most basic discriminatory functions have been completely sapped and I've no real idea.

The Merzbox. All of it. At full volume.

Wait no, that's not very nice. It would make you a lot sicker.

Neil Young's Dead Man soundtrack has a good forward motion to it, but is also pretty backgroundy. Then again, it could put you to sleep.

indie massive unite! attack him while he's down! recommend neutral milk hotel records!

seriously tho, if you still wanna listen to music in your pitiful state, i've got a feeling that a herbert record'll do: woozy, blocked-nose listening in a stressed work environment means that you want something rhythmic/dynamic enough so that you don't just close your eyes and slump over, non-productively. on the other hand, something with too much of a 'presence' might serve as an initial 'up and at 'em!' motivator, but 3 tracks into "rooty" you realise that now you're thinking about that thing that tim said about the great drum programming and it being on track 3 means that you've already spent 12 minutes doing that one thing you told yourself you were going to finish halfway into "romeo" and booty-shakin' won't pay the bills and you're losing focus by the minute, so need to switch back to music as 'easy-listening'. but this won't happen, as you've taken my advice and are playing 'bodily functions' - your mind's effortlessly shifting gears between the 4/4 house stuff and the breezy floaty jazz stuff with the pretty digital detailing and look! the report is pretty much writing itself and you haven't blown your nose in twenty minutes!

So far the Happy Mondays' Pills Thrills And Bellyaches has worked so well I put it on twice. And the Beach Boys are doing OK. Sooooothing but not soporific.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

You need happy! When I feel rotten I put on a classic Louis Prima comp, Zooma Zooma or Buona Sera (mostly the same tracks) - musical ecstasy.

My current sickness track is the super long 13 minute version of Dubtribe Sound System's "Do It Now". Last year I grew to love enormously the 15-track version of Tiger Bay I always talk about by listening to it constantly when I had tonselitis, sitting by a sunny window and drinking lemon and ginger tea.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Luomo 'Vocalcity" - it has mediterranean groove. Makes me think about my holiday in Grecce. Or Sam Prekop solo LP - his voice works better than any balsam.
