has anyone heard
a the nirvana single
b the latest pearl jam albulm (due for release 12 Nov)

What did you think? Does ANYONE still have a faint nostalgic wish to discuss? Hidden beneath that intellectual desire to validate shite pop music some of you must still give this stuff a passing listen. Humour me as usual.

Nirvana = overrated.

i, for some reason, still give an eff about Pearl Jam. i don't think they've had an album yet that doesn't have at least a few great songs (although Ten is too dated/played out to enjoy anything besides Porch)...so i'll probably buy the new one faithfully...kinda disappointed that they've yet again gone for a 'difficult' (slowwww) song for the first single, but not a bad track. and with Eddie last seen sporting a mohawk and playing ukelele, who knows, could be interesting...

Oh, if only that were the case. Riot Act could have been great, but it falls apart in many different places. A lot of Eddie's vocals sound phoned in; the songs themselves are so meticulously played they're devoid of any spark. It's the sound of a band who has become "content," and contentment is a killer.

That aside, there are a handful of songs that are keepers: Save You, Ghost, You Are, and Get Right. 4 songs=1/3 of the album. Sad ratio. Should have been an EP.

Nirvana is overrated, but only because half the people who give them praise don't understand anything about them. I love Nirvana, but it pisses me off when people hail them as the greatest band of all time just because they've heard "Teen Spirit" a few times. I seem to recall Dee Snider saying they were "as metallic as it gets." Seriously, WTF is that! If you're a member of Twisted Sister, you shouldn't be judging Nirvana. (Or any other half-decent band, for that matter.)

eddie needs to hook up with conor oberst.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 19 October 2002 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a slash fic I don't know if I could handle easily.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 October 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Twisted Sister was as Oi! as it gets (I agree with Dee Snider BTW). The new Nirvana song is terrible.

Kris (aqueduct), Saturday, 19 October 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it's been butchered by Courtney Love and her troop of Kurt Cobain pimps.

Curtis Stephens, Saturday, 19 October 2002 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, and in case you misinterpreted what Dee was saying--he was calling Nirvana a metal band, and he did so in praise. It just pisses me off because, even if Nirvana isn't the greatest band around, Twisted Sister is bad enough that I wouldn't be calling on their opinions to distinguish between good and bad music.

three weeks pass...
"You Know You're Right" (the song) sounds like ... well, Nirvana. It's not bad. As I said on another thread, I don't own any Nirvana records at all, so I might get the new compilation.

I'm chiefly reviving this thread tho' to talk about the video for "You Know You're Right" which I caught on MTVE this morning and made me angry. It's basically a fast-moving collage of images of Kurt (only the ones where he's looking his most angelic, natch) and the band - from interviews, other news media footage, live performances... possibly some "home movie" stuff in there too. The images are edited to the music, so at times it appears as though what we are seeing is the band singing/playing this song, altho' clearly they weren't. I dunno, I suppose the intention is to celebrate the man and the band, but I found it all fairly nauseating.

So - the YKYR video: sick or just plain "Dumb"?

Jeff W, Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Sick in the way all crass marketing of dead people is, and dumb that they didn't go all the way. If they're gonna bother raping the man's works, why not techno remixes and him rocking out with Elton John in a coke ad? My video would have involved an irony party full of people in Kurt'n'Courtney outfits.

I think the Journals, with their lack of context, chronology and Courtney might sicken me more.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 15 November 2002 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Just you wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 November 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

So what if Dee Snider liked Nirvana? If someone you don't like compliments something you do like, does that somehow taint the thing you do like? Also, Twisted Sister was weak, but had a cool name, and get props for reviving the Alice Cooper shtick of youth anthems crossed with cross-dressing crossed with horror flicks. Without as many hooks, alas.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 15 November 2002 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Twisted Sister was nothing BUT hooks! Anyone know what their albums sound like?

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 15 November 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, Nirvana was more metal than Twisted Sister but Twisted Sister had better videos.

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 15 November 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I have "Stay Hungry" and "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "I Wanna Rock" are high-larious dumb fun Alice Cooper rip-offs. Dee Snider is a moron, but they were fun. And they had the guitarist from the Dictators! And they told off Tipper Gore and the PMRC so that's more points for them...
