I'm hoping the new Elliott doc Heaven Adores You will have a soundtrack. I'm sure DreamWorks has some great material in the vaults that we haven't heard yet.

DavidLeeRoth, Thursday, 29 May 2014 12:50 (twelve years ago)

he was unbelievable prolific! i still find shit in YT that I've never heard, and i'm a big fan. what makes the volume of his output so impressive is that it's all (being elliott smith) so personal, rather than various conceptual exercises or whatever.

rap is afraid of me (rip van wanko), Thursday, 29 May 2014 13:10 (twelve years ago)

Elliott is my favorite artist of all time and its hard to even pick 50 songs, let alone 10. These are my favorites right now:

Kings Crossing
Alameda
High Times
Stained Glass Eye
A Distorted Reality is Now a Necessity to be Free
St. Idea Heaven
Alphabet Town
The Biggest Lie
Everything Means Nothing to Me
Suicide Machine

His Big Star cover of 'Thirteen' has always been a favorite of mine too.

scubasteve, Thursday, 29 May 2014 14:24 (twelve years ago)

^^ another vote for Alphabet Town. great call, that song always gets under my skin, particularly this bit:

"Her hand on your arm
She put her hand on your arm
And told you her name you can't pronounce it"

Bled White
Baby Britain

Pitseleh

An XO-less X (allowing me to actually pick):

Angeles
St Ides Heaven
Speed Trials
Ballad of Big Nothing
Say Yes
Happiness
A Fond Farewell
Angel In The Snow
Between The Bars
Half Right

I am having the best night for a while. Nothing like rediscovering one of your favourite artists.

Don't sleep of "Bastard John" from the second Heatmiser album.

I just reacquainted myself with that song a couple weeks ago because I always forget Heatmiser exists and when I remember it I get excited because it's like there's a bunch of new Elliott Smith songs to jam out with.

it's a good list. i do hope some more stuff comes out in the future. the heaven adores you soundtrack is half-great - i mean, it has True Love is a Rose - but I have no idea why the filmmakers put on already available studio versions of songs like LA on there. also, they touted the "early version" of The Last Hour that was the same performance that made it on Basement. the movie was garbage, too. far too much already available material, and poor editing in the interviews - all the anecdotes and points chosen are well worn. like, i can't believe they cut Rob Schnapf describing the recording of Tomorrow, Tomorrow and put it online after the fact. i hope they put out the complete Basement tapes someday, that's the most interesting era of his career by a long shot for me..

flappy bird, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 01:07 (nine years ago)

yes the doc was very disappointing! has there even been a decent full length biography written yet?

pinkhushpuppies (rip van wanko), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 01:21 (nine years ago)

yes, it's called Torment Saint (ugh). pretty good, reminded me of Heavier Than Heaven, similar in scope and depth. Much better than the movie.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 04:04 (nine years ago)

That's a shit title, but would really love to read it.

I can see what the compiler of that top 12 was going for, but it's not by any means the top twelve. Randomly pick 12 ES songs and you get a good list. Will see if I can pick my own twelve. It will probably take forever.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 08:33 (nine years ago)

Should I report this to the worst music writing thread?

some comically lucid lyrics like, “Now she’s done and they’re calling someone, such a familiar name, I’m so glad that my name is Ramon.”

in twelve parts (lamonti), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 14:25 (nine years ago)

Haha

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 7 September 2016 16:13 (nine years ago)

man how did they fuck that one up

xps and yeah I agree, it's def not a definitive list, you could pick any 12 songs by Smith and be good... totally agree that the spidery chorus modulation on the lead guitar in A Fond Farewell totally makes it, that was the song that made me a fan...

three years pass...

for some reason, we don't seem to have a general purpose Elliott Smith thread so posting here.

I haven't checked out any of the songs mentioned yet but this is such a sweet and fascinating story from Jayson Greene: https://pitchfork.com/features/article/the-untold-story-of-elliott-smiths-teenage-band/

Roz, Friday, 3 March 2023 03:18 (three years ago)

Thanks for that, would have missed it. Can't wait to explore.

OMG

Wile E. Galore (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 3 March 2023 13:15 (three years ago)

man, it really is amazing and eerie to hear the songs from this era that he continued reworking up until his death. although even with re-written lyrics, i feel like his friend maybe should've gotten some writing credits :/

like "Three" is pretty much "King's Crossing"
