COS I'M COOLER THAN A POLLER BEAR'S TOENAILS — Outkast artist poll

Rank your TOP 25 TRACKS and TOP 5 ALBUMS and send your ballots to popthelevels at gmail dot com. Ballots due Saturday June 7 (by the next morning)

-I was thinking about including any callabo track that features BOTH dre and big boi for the tracks poll but how do we feel about this? So like Intrntl PLyrs Anthm, Neck Uv Da Woods and Bkack Ice would count. Should this just be a side poll?

-Let's separate Speakerbox and Love Below for the albums poll and also include Sir Luscious Left Foot?

Other thoughts welcome.

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 15:55 (twelve years ago)

I think collabo tracks with Dre and Big Boi should count in the main tracks poll. Also, great thread name.

intheblanks, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:09 (twelve years ago)

Yeah after thinking about a little deeper those tracks may dominate too much.

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:11 (twelve years ago)

yeah i think group collabs like IPA should def be part of the main poll. those tracks were usually credited as "featuring Outkast" anyway.

ςὖτ ιτ Οὖτ (some dude), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:17 (twelve years ago)

this'll be interesting. how much of Idlewild will place lol

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:31 (twelve years ago)

zerrrrrro

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:38 (twelve years ago)

Not that I think it will be a serious contender, but will Dangerous Lies and Vicious Rumors will also be included in the albums poll?

intheblanks, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:42 (twelve years ago)

I be on it, straight up on it

rip van wanko, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:42 (twelve years ago)

haha totally forgot that existed no joke xp. idk sure

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:45 (twelve years ago)

(never listened to it in full)

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:45 (twelve years ago)

was listening to Sir Lucious Left Foot the other day - there's some annoying details on it but it holds up pretty well for the most part. I still laugh at the David Blaine.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:50 (twelve years ago)

I like that album.

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:54 (twelve years ago)

i feel like if we're doing Big Boi's albums (plus the Outkast album that is essentially 2 solo albums) we may as well do any feature by either of them, but i understand not including those and won't force the issue too much.

ςὖτ ιτ Οὖτ (some dude), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 16:54 (twelve years ago)

I'm fine with excluding Big Boi's solo albums, actually. And I think an individual features side poll would be awesome. But I don't know if I support the idea of, like, "What a Job" showing up in the Outkast poll.

intheblanks, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 17:44 (twelve years ago)

Sir Lucious is so good, it really makes Dangerous Lies even more painful in comparison

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 17:45 (twelve years ago)

Also I fear that IPA will end up, like, #3 or something. And much as I love that song, I still consider it a UGK song first and foremost. So I guess I'm cool with any decision regarding features. Guess I've probably expressed my opinion on the issue enough here, I'll bow out until we start posting "nominations"

intheblanks, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 17:47 (twelve years ago)

there's no nomination period, though; just make a ballot and send it in

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 17:53 (twelve years ago)

yeah use this thread to discuss the stuff in the OP and also to big up tracks you think might get slept on/personal classics/album cuts etc.

I've created a spotify playlist with eligible tracks and will create a youtube playlist with the missing tracks here soon:

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:02 (twelve years ago)

Anybody who doesn't vote "Bowtie" number one ain't about that life.

voodoo chili, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:07 (twelve years ago)

Woah, short window! I mean, far less stuff to revisit (or visit--I just finally listened to the debut album for the first time in anticipation of this poll) than with Dylan, but I'm given very little time to overthink this one.

Funk autocorrect (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:07 (twelve years ago)

yeah sorry trying to wrap it up before I go out of town on the 16th but this is waaaaaaay less to tackle than Dylan, no?

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:13 (twelve years ago)

yeah I don't think this catalog is particularly difficult

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:13 (twelve years ago)

Bowtie is cool but prob not making my ballot.

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:14 (twelve years ago)

what's the ruling on tracks from "Even in Darkness..."

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:14 (twelve years ago)

cuz CROOKED BOOTY

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:15 (twelve years ago)

25 sounds like a lot, but I just made a preliminary list of 40 and I'm having trouble imagining what I'll eventually cut out.

But yeah, six studio albums is very manageable, even with dozens of great songs.

voodoo chili, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:16 (twelve years ago)

EID is a tough one xp.

having a hard time deciding on what to include/exclude tbf. I kinda like the idea of the track (outside of their own discography) having to include both artists. So only 'Trans DF Express' would be eligible from EID.

Ive always thought of spkrbx/lvblw as an outkast project cos of how it was released so tracks on either of those would be eligible as well even if both aren't included.

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:32 (twelve years ago)

ah right Crooked Booty is just Andre. Well I would still vote for Trans DF Express in any event.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:34 (twelve years ago)

Spottie, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 18:47 (twelve years ago)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 19:04 (twelve years ago)

man remembering how much I love 13th Floor/Growing Old, too bad it has that stupid "sodomites get all the rights line"

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 19:37 (twelve years ago)

Morris Brown and The Train both great too.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 28 May 2014 23:22 (twelve years ago)

biggest problem with Idlewild is the closing stretch IMO, otherwise there's some good stuff there

nova, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 23:27 (twelve years ago)

voodoo chili, Thursday, 29 May 2014 03:44 (twelve years ago)

not always sure how I feel about all the sung hooks on the Big Boi tracks tbh

nova, Thursday, 29 May 2014 03:59 (twelve years ago)

Whole run from Mighty O to In Your Dreams is pretty good actually, with the exception of the annoying Life is a Musical.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 29 May 2014 15:44 (twelve years ago)

I have never really listened to their first or last albums. I guess I should do that

Οὖτις, Thursday, 29 May 2014 17:10 (twelve years ago)

You havent heard southernplayalistic?

Spottie, Thursday, 29 May 2014 17:12 (twelve years ago)

I don't own it. I know the songs that were on that greatest hits thing with the Whole World but never bothered to get around to buying the whole thing

Οὖτις, Thursday, 29 May 2014 17:14 (twelve years ago)

oh man. yeah def get on it.

Spottie, Thursday, 29 May 2014 17:18 (twelve years ago)

huh I thought Royal Flush was actually credited to Outkast...? weird

Οὖτις, Thursday, 29 May 2014 17:43 (twelve years ago)

I'm calling it now - My Favorite Things at #1

Οὖτις, Thursday, 29 May 2014 17:50 (twelve years ago)

good call, royal flush is on spotify, added the other one to the youtube playlist

Spottie, Thursday, 29 May 2014 18:06 (twelve years ago)

good call to voodoo chili, not to 'my favorite things' winning ;)

Spottie, Thursday, 29 May 2014 18:08 (twelve years ago)

Royal Flush is on my ballot

man listening to all this is reminding me how exciting these guys were at their peak, how great it was to have a rap act with such a wide, colorful palette both musically and lyrically also be absolutely massive pop stars. They seem like the genre's last gasp in that respect.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 29 May 2014 18:13 (twelve years ago)

otm. aquemini was such a landmark album

Spottie, Thursday, 29 May 2014 18:31 (twelve years ago)

title track is top 5 though

sufi john paxson (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 8 June 2014 05:27 (eleven years ago)

I am (shamefully) listening to SPCM for the first time rn. I feel a little weird puttin tons of stuff from it on there but the signature songs (Aint No Thang, Players Ball, Git Up Get Out) are dead certs for my vote

nova ydal (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 8 June 2014 05:38 (eleven years ago)

don't be ashamed. great songs.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Sunday, 8 June 2014 05:54 (eleven years ago)

beyond title track, idgi

sufi john paxson (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 8 June 2014 07:29 (eleven years ago)

but my fondest memories of outkast are my big brother picking me up from 8th grade football and playing aquemini on the ride home. It was the best music I had ever heard.

sufi john paxson (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 8 June 2014 07:31 (eleven years ago)

Some of it still is

yeah ::shrug:: a lot of the 3000 wackiness people love just bugs the shit out of me. i like when he's just a rapper with a lot of personality and interesting flows.

some dude, Sunday, 8 June 2014 16:33 (eleven years ago)

Just voted. Didn't have time to listen to the non album tracks, but at least have heard all the albums now

, Sunday, 8 June 2014 19:59 (eleven years ago)

Yup that'll be it. Probably start compiling within an hour after that ends. I'll update everyone as the time gets closer but that would be the earliest.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Sunday, 8 June 2014 20:10 (eleven years ago)

Cot damn thought we had til the 16th

Only started listening since 1

Luckily I have Stankonia more or less committed to memory so I won't need to spend that much time on it, and fuck everything that came after

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 8 June 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)

I forgot about "Land of a Million Drums."

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 8 June 2014 20:36 (eleven years ago)

Me too! Just added to the spreadsheet but I'm sure it won't make the cut.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Sunday, 8 June 2014 20:37 (eleven years ago)

Dunno if I stated this already but if anyone wants to change their ballot you can up until the cutoff. I haven't plugged anything in yet.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Sunday, 8 June 2014 20:40 (eleven years ago)

I won't put you through the trouble. The only track I regret forgetting is "The Train.

, Sunday, 8 June 2014 22:24 (eleven years ago)

Also for clarity, speakerboxx and love below are separated for the albums poll. So for people that wrote speakerboxx make sure you meant that cos if you meant love below or both then its gonna go to the wrong place. Email me back if you anyone wants to change it.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Sunday, 8 June 2014 22:45 (eleven years ago)

voded. some real half an ass ranking, but i'm happy with the final cut.

plus sent an update re the bit abt separating spkrbxxx & TLB. how many votes you end up getting?

sci-fi looking, chubby-leafed, delicately bizarre (contenderizer), Monday, 9 June 2014 01:23 (eleven years ago)

Something over 20 so far. Will give anyone another hour or so that wants it. Rev? Jord?

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Monday, 9 June 2014 02:23 (eleven years ago)

nice! i got 21 ballots for the Jay-Z poll, 19 for Neptunes and 36 for Timbaland, so you'll probably end up somewhere in the middle of that curve.

some dude, Monday, 9 June 2014 02:41 (eleven years ago)

pleasantly surprised after such a poor showing for Kellz

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Monday, 9 June 2014 02:49 (eleven years ago)

ah yeah, wow, that got only 15. on the bright side, the turnout for your Wu Tang poll will definitely be huge.

some dude, Monday, 9 June 2014 02:54 (eleven years ago)

hoping so! that one will take some work and have tons of side poll options

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Monday, 9 June 2014 02:57 (eleven years ago)

yeah...i'd like to put another rap or contemporary R&B poll on the queue since right now all that's left is Wu and Badu, but i dunno what would even get a good turnout. Kanye, Beyonce/DC, maybe Biggie.

some dude, Monday, 9 June 2014 03:10 (eleven years ago)

kanye would get a lot but Im tired of talking/hearing about him tbf. DITC would be awesome but probably not get enough turnout.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Monday, 9 June 2014 03:12 (eleven years ago)

SPLAY 4
ATLNZ 5
AQMNI 4
STNKO 6
SPKRX 3
LVBLW 3

sci-fi looking, chubby-leafed, delicately bizarre (contenderizer), Monday, 9 June 2014 03:15 (eleven years ago)

lmao at SPLAY and STNKO

yeah i have terminal Kanye fatigue and would personally not volunteer to run that poll, just saying it would prob get a good number of ballots.

some dude, Monday, 9 June 2014 03:33 (eleven years ago)

alright 17 MORE MINUTES IF YOU WANT TO VOTE!

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Monday, 9 June 2014 03:44 (eleven years ago)
