I hate religious fanatics

I've lived my entire life in the "bible belt" of the southeastern United States. I'm from Pace, Florida which is in Santa Rosa county - the Guiness record holder for most churches per square mile. This really sucks because I am one of a very small number of atheists in an area full of people with no tolerance for anything that differs from their beliefs. I've put up with it for 21 years now and I feel like I'm about to break. Someone please tell me that there exists a place in which the majority of people have the capacity for reason!

You should read my "I Hate the Rev. Fred Phelps" thread. YOu should also come live out here in beautiful sunny California. It's In the high 60s in March. I loooooove my home, and I'm never leaving!! (I live in the Bay Area by San Frnacisco). There aren't a lot of crazy Bible people out here, either. I think it's cool that people have something that they believe in, y'know...something that gets em going in the morning, but I don't think its cool for them to push it on other people. We have Mormon's and Jehovah's Witnesses set up in the quad of my college always preaching "The Godd Word" and it really sucks ass when all you are trying to do is buy a soda.

atheists can be pretty intolerant as well

rebekah (rebekah), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

How are you defining 'atheist'?

By the technical def.: someone who is without god
or by the popular def.: someone who believes there is no god

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

by 'you' I meant both rebekah and Brent

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

linkin park suck ass, get a life, there is no god, we are a consequence of how the universe formed, spread that around. show them god isn't real - start your own religion, show how easy it is to make up bullpoop. religion is a glorified and taken the worng way of making people stick to the rules of an aggressor. think about that and deal with it. by the way, i have respect fro theists etc, i just have a strong opinion that religion is evil.so don't take this the wrong way

nevermind^, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

get a life as in new bands, good bands:) tbh

nevermind^, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was taking the popular definition as an atheist is someone who believes there is no god. but if you don't believe in god, isn't that the same as being without god? oh well, i just mean people who say, IF YOU BELIEVE IN GOD YOU ARE SO STUPID. not all atheists are like that obviously!

i disagree about the last point - just because religion has been misused doesn't make it evil. i imagine every good or even neutral thing has been abused to make it harmful. religion, when misused, has done me a lot of harm, but it has also helped me a lot when i eventually found a place that suited me - it's given me a community, something like a second family, as well as a place to ask questions etc.

rebekah (rebekah), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

. but if you don't believe in god, isn't that the same as being without god?

No. It's not having an opinion.
For example, if I asked you "Do you believe that Joe Blow was the greatest bowler ever?", you would not have a belief either way since you have no information to go on.

Thus, this technical definition of atheism is synonymous w/agnosticism. Agnosticism was a term created by Aldous Huxley, after the original meaning of atheism was perverted, both by Xians and those who believed there is no god.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

so if atheism and agnosticism is exactly the same thing, what do you call people who believe there is no god?
seems this way it makes it easier, at least there is no confusion

webber (webber), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

ok, so i was using the "popular" definition. i guess you could call me an infidel, but it sounds kind of derogatory.

and i dont think that belief in any god or gods makes a person stupid. in fact, my fiancée believes in god.

Brent Colville (A Bettik), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

You should read my "I Hate the Rev. Fred Phelps" thread

my girlfriend told me about that crap a while back. the way they keep track of how long its been since those people were killed is sickening.

i was working third shift at waffle house one night a while back when a large van pulled in and unloaded quite a few people. when they came in one of them started handing out fliers for this revival thing. he was very excited about some guy that was gonna be preaching there. "you should come down and hear Rev. Blobbity Blah, he's gonna be talkin' bout how queers are goin ta hell. aint nuttin good bout a queer." when i told him i didnt believe in god and that i had a few bisexual friends he told me i was going to hell too. my friend tim happened to be hanging out drinking coffee at this time and also happens to be one of those friends. tim is a unique person. he has read and reread the bible and considers himself a christian. i guess you could say he's formed his own beliefs. when this guy handed tim a flier, tim's response was something like "i dont want this crap." they sat there and argued and threw scripture at each other for like two hours. i guess it never occured to the guy that someone could believe in the bible and be bisexual, because he seemed very surprised when tim threw his arm around him and said "well you know what, i am one." it was really funny.

Brent Colville (A Bettik), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

to define an atheist as a person without god, is nonsensical because it assumes there is one, fair enough if you area theist, but you cannot describe someone who does not believe there is one, without it. and if you don't understand that then, be your aragant self.

jonathan gittins (nevermind^), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha oh dear, yr going to hell because you have BISEXUAL FRIENDS!

rebekah (rebekah), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

to define an atheist as a person without god, is nonsensical because it assumes there is one

Nah. If I say "i'm a person without shoobdibbles" does that mean i'm admitting shoobdibbles exist?
Or, I could say "i'm a person w/o a belief in god". By your reasoning, the only thing I'm assuming exists is that people believe in god.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, no one made fun of me for working at waffle house. you people are great.
