Scenes that stay with you

yesterday BBC4 broadcast bergman's 'hour of the wolf'. Adored the way it was filmed and the scene I enjoyed the most was the one in which the main character killed the child and threw him in the river: the shot of his bloodied head under the water, going deeper in the river, eventually disappearing from our view, being watched by the killer.
And then it seems to come back into view for a brief moment and then it goes back down again.

What are some of yr favourite scenes, shots?

Jem Cohen's "Lost Book Found"--the payphones with "pray" scratched into them; the handwritten signs; the montage of shots corresponding to entry titles in the book.

Harmony Korine's "julian donkey-boy"--dad spraying brother with the hose ("be a man, be a winner")

David Lynch's "Eraserhead"--the deformed baby

"Pet Semetary"--haven't seen this one since i was about nine years old, but the twisted spine spitting out her meal of baby food--scared the hell out of me & still sticks in my mind.

Bergman's "Cries and Whispers"--the screaming session(s)

Bergman's "Persona"--the opening avant-garde montage; the scene where bibi anderson is talking about having anonymous sex on a beach & getting pregnant; stepping on glass; the ghost through the room

P.T. Anderson's "magnolia"--professing love to the bartender; the rain of frogs (of course)

leighton pierce's "wood"--the saw blade through the smoke fumes

"Un Chien Andalou"--the eye cutting; ants through hand

"Belle de Jour"--head ringing bell

so many more...jodorowsky comes to mind, "begotten", etc. but i'll stop.

The wicked witch's feet sticking out from under the house in The Wizard Of Oz.
The maid levitating in Teorama (better than it sounds honest).
The disabled boy rocking back and forth, hypnotised by the poster of an American bodybuilder he's been given in A Time For Drunken Horses.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Sunday, 11 January 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

can't believe i forgot to add this one--

John Water's "Pink Flamingos"--the orgy with the chicken, the sausage flasher, and of course, the singing anus.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Monday, 12 January 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw this documentary called "silverlake life"... i don't want to spoil it for anyone but there is one scene that i will never forget in my entire life.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 12 January 2004 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What happened??????

udu wudu (udu wudu), Monday, 12 January 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

So... someone on ILF knows personally someone on the crew of Wisconsin Death Trip, right?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"Stay with you" implies that given scenes' spell has been longer than any other, I guess.

That in mind, one of my earliest viewing experience was Poltergeist and I still am haunted by the shot of JoBeth Williams barrelling down a hallway as it stretches out in front of her.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

eric- yes, that's what i was getting at.

the scene I started was from a movie I had just watched so I may forget it but it made me think of the question.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

These are from pretty recent films...

When the 'singing' woman in Mulholland Drive collapses.
The "Mad World" montage in Donnie Darko.
The floating away at the end of Waking Life.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The scene in Fitzcarraldo where Klaus is standing on the river boat when he hears natives playing drums playing in the forest. Fearing that he is about to be attacked, Fitz sets up the Victrola on deck to play Caruso to the forest. Caruso plays, along with the drums in the forest, and you see a profile shot of Fitz and the lush green forest scrolling by. Absolutely one of the most beautiful moments I have ever seen captured on film and the reason I love film today.

The flashback scene in 8 1/2 which explains why Guido was thinking Asa Nisi Masa while the guy was trying to read his mind

The scene in the Tin Drum where Oskar is sitting beneath the bleachers of the Nazi rally. He starts playing his drum and changes the cadence of the Nazi band, causing the whole group to descend into chaos.

The scene in Andrei Rublev where the nude pagens are running through the forest.

The scene in Wings of Desire where Nick Cave is performing.

Peter Lorre's speech at the end of Fritz Lang's M.

Jessy's song and dance number in Greaser's Palace

A dozen different scenes in Yi Yi. Take your pick.

Every time I listen to Arctic Bar by Meredith Monk I remember the first murder scene from Cure... I used to like that track, dammit.

, Wednesday, 14 January 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ashamedly, the scene in Castaway where the anthropomorphic basketball drops off the raft and sails away. Heartbreaking. Shameless.

Oh, okay, how about when Matuschek tries to kill himself in The Shop Around the Corner, and (honestly) the final moments of The Iron Giant. I'm a big softie.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

...and, for some reason, anything in which Burt Lancaster does acrobatics.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't be ashamed about Castaway--it's a great movie, and getting better with age.

the final scenes of Gallipoli, which i saw just a few days ago, have really stuck with me.

Cries and Whispers where the elder sister smears blood from you know where on her lips.

Red's freeze frame end.

Mookie. Trash can. Window.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 23 January 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Al Pacino hustling Jonathan Pryce in Glengarry Glen Ross. "My balls were like concrete."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 24 January 2004 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Te near conclusion of Boogie Nights. The tracking shot that follows Burt Reynolds as he checks up on his surrogate porn family and the slight sound of recgonition he lets out upon passing the painted portrait of the deceased William H. Macy.
The part in Taste of Cherry when the suicidal protagonist watches pounds of dirt being poured onto his long shadow at the construction site.
I'm embarrassed too have mentioned far too often, but I mention it because I saw it again recently and was pleasently surprised by the happiness it brought me, Davy Jones and Tony Basil's song and dance in the Daddy's Song musical number in Head.

theodore fogelsanger, Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't seen "Head" and I have no idea why...Somebody ask me next week if I've rented it yet, and if I haven't, don't let me post anything. I need displine, damnit! Films take priority over work/girlfriend/social life/making my own films/feeding my cats/etc.!

oh, another one: the scene in Brakhage's "Kindering" where the little boy is standing over the little girl lying on the ground & play-acting whipping at her with a branch with the bizarre over-modulated children's voice singing in the background and the kaleidoscoping lens--amazing scene.
