Or is it just a hyped up cult film?

Yes and Yes.

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. you don't need to see the other evil dead movies though.

Except Evil Dead 2 which is the best one. And the third one because it has a funny joke in it.

Fat Alberet (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 January 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the funny joke? The graveyard slapstick sequence?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The bit where he forgets the magic phrase and just tries to wing it.

evil dead 2 is the best one only in the sense that it's the best looking one, but evil dead 1 has more charm, I think.

I'm probably in the minority, but I liked "Army of Darkness" better than the other two.

Bruce Campbell is great.

I personally like it a lot, but if you don't like horror films, then there is not a single reason to see Evil Dead.

Anthony (Anthony F), Thursday, 15 January 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't agree. I'm not a much of a horror fan, but i love the Evil Dead. if you have a fondness for kitschy stuff, you'll love it.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Thursday, 15 January 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

am i correct in assuming that it's supposed to be funny and not really scary?

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 15 January 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The first one is funny by accident. The sequels were intentionally comedic.

Anthony (Anthony F), Friday, 16 January 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Accident. Naw... that tree branch up the poon is like porny Three Stooges. Evil Dead was more comedy than horror from film one.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 16 January 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't waste your time listening to the Raimi/(some other guy) audio commentary for the Evil Dead DVD...*yawn*. BUT...do listen to Bruce Campbell's commentary track, which is fantastic. And, if he doesn't have something interesting to say about a certain scene, he cracks bad (i.e. great) jokes.

Like...scene where Bruce is cutting off zombie woman's hand:
"Gotta hand it to her..."

By the way, CLASSIC...all three of them.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Friday, 16 January 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Give it a watch, it's dated badly though and I'm not a big fan of Sam Raimi's work.

C-Man (C-Man), Friday, 16 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The first one is funny by accident. The sequels were intentionally comedic.

Is this true?

Darcus How? (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 January 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. And I happen to know this for a fact.

C-Man (C-Man), Friday, 16 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The original Evil Dead was cheap and looks it. Watch Evil Dead 2:
it retains more of the originals horror with the effects budget
noticeably upgraded. Army of Darkness was pure comedy, not a bad rental but so far in mood from the original it would be as if the makers of "Mafia!" had called their movie "Godfather IV"; not that
Army of Darkness is as horrible as Mafia!, but... you get the idea.

Dave Gilbert, Monday, 19 January 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The original Evil Dead was funny and looks it and I'm not talking about "so cheesy it's hilarious" funny but "oh my God some of this slapstick rivals Tati" funny.

Well, not exactly but... you get the idea.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 19 January 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, they really are more funny than scary; only the first one makes any serious effort at even being a horror film. I'm a big horror film fan, and while films like the first Evil Dead, and to pick another appropriate example, Reanimator, are good and have their charms, they kicked off a horror-as-comedy genre that continues to this day, and to my mind did far more harm than good.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Crimewave, when you're through.

eleki-san (eleki-san), Sunday, 14 March 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the whole Evil Dead series is rather dodgy; number two is the best of the bunch, but the series doesn't really have any redeeming value to me outside of Bruce Campbell's slapstick perfomances with his "evil" hand.

Chris F. (servoret), Monday, 15 March 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Then you have no soul.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 15 March 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

That's OK, I don't believe in 'em anyway. Sorry, but I've never been able to sit through Army of Darkness without falling asleep, and watching Evil Dead was so disappointing after hearing all the hype. Joe Bob Briggs really let me down with that one.

Chris F. (servoret), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Or on that one, rather.
