A boring but easy one. I'm not good at lists. I kept it 10 to try and challenge myself.

Panic In Needle Park
The Godfather
Serpico
The Godfather pt. II
Scarface
Sea Of Love
Glengarry Glen Ross
Carlito's Way
Heat
Donnie Brasco

I suppose that's about as obvious as it can get but if anyone wants to challenge it.

I suppose Dog Day Afternoon should go in for Sea Of Love. Whoops.

While we're here, applause please for Jack Lemmon in GGR.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 23 January 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed. Ol' Shelly is one of the best movie characters ever written and acted. IMHO.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 23 January 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

errrrr...
Cruising
Scarecrow
Insomnia
And (though its not a great film, he is great in it): Bobby Deerfield

David Nolan (David N.), Friday, 23 January 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Cruising - for serious?
Scarecrow - Haven't seen it
Insomnia - Not particularly good film, not exactly great performance
And (though its not a great film, he is great in it): Bobby Deerfield - I thought about it, went for Needle Park instead.

Al Pacino dancing in a leathery xy-xy bar = more interesting than practically every gangsta moment evah? I vote yes.

Scent of A Woman

ModJ (ModJ), Saturday, 24 January 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I thought about Scent Of A Woman but...

Eric, you might have something there.

Pacino looks truly terrified in much of Cruising. I always thought he was bestin his earlier roles when he was containing all that obvious energy he possesses - Michael Corleone is so repressed, so pent-up, so obviously furious that he becomes all the more frightening and tragic. In his later roles he just releases all that energy and chews any scenery in the vicinity.
Scent Of A Woman is perhaps the best (worst?) example of this. All that HAMMY! SHOUTING!!
With Donnie Brasco and Insomnia he seemed to realise this to a certain extent and his work is a lot more restrained.
As for Scarface, perhaps his wildest, most OTT performance, its pure comedy, is it not? Tony Montana is a caricature and Pacino treats him as a joke...

"This down is one great poosy waiting to be fokked!"

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 24 January 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Cruising is valuable Pacino-wise solely for his spastic dance routine with a handkerchief full of ether.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 January 2004 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

An Anti-Rough Guide:

Gigli
The Recruit
S1m0ne
Devil's Advocate
The Godfather: Part III
Revolution
Cruising

What was his performance in Angels like?
IMDB says he's filming a version of Mechant of Venice, playing Shylock natch.

Oy.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes but aren't his performances in Revolution, The Godfather III and The Recruit virtually indistinguishible from his performances in Scarface, Heat and Glengarry Glen Ross?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved him the Devi's Advocate.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes but aren't his performances in Revolution, The Godfather III and The Recruit virtually indistinguishible from his performances in Scarface, Heat and Glengarry Glen Ross?

No! Well maybe Heat.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 26 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

He's in Gigli?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

He has an uncredited cameo.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Devil's Advocate is clearly the best bad Al Pacino film.
