salon.com has a lengthy article on klaus kinski today, apropos of (seemingly) nothing. but it got me wondering - what are some non-herzog directed films where kinski's worth watching? i'm not sure i've seen any aside from doctor zhivago and a few dollars more.

Crawlspace! I remember seeing it as a young child, not knowing how Kinski was at the time of course, and being scared to death.

Of course, i'm sure it wouldn't age well. Maybe search Jack the Ripper? I haven't seen it.

For a Few Dollars More. His part is brief, but unforgettable if you're a Kinski fan.

The autobiography is a MUST read. It's hysterical, though unintentionally so.

If you really want to see Kinski cranked up to 11, get a copy of his Paganini movie. It'll make your jaw drop.

Hmmm. Okay, question: which movie was filmed first? Cobra Verde or Paganini? According to the Salon article (and other sources), Paganini was first. According to the IMDB, Cobra Verde was from 1987 and Paganini was from 1989, and other web sources say that Cobra was first.

It may seem unimportant, but it's of interest to me, because in My Best Fiend, I seem to remember Herzog talking about Kinski asking him to direct Paganini (after Cobra Verde) which paralleled onscreen with the closing shots of Cobra Verde, where Kinski is making a futile attempt to drag a boat out to sea. It makes it seem more poignant and depressing if Kinski had ended his career with Paganini than with Cobra Verde.

On the DVD commentary for Cobre Verde (an underrated Herzog/Kinski collaboration), Herzog talks about Kinski's increasing resistence to his direction; according to Herzog, Kinski thought himself to be a better director than anyone. Herzog goes on to briefly talk about Paganini and that its awfulness supposedly proves Kinski's confidence in his directing abilities as delusions of grandeur. I very much want to see Paganini, though I haven't heard enough to suggest its worth tracking down.
