I've just made this list off the top of my head, but I would like you guys to destroy and reconstruct it. The rules are as follows:
1. You may exchange any title for another from the same year.2. You may exchange any title for another with a similar theme or story.3. You may exchange any title for another which shares the same word in its title.
Please list your exchanges like this:
35. Mean Streets (1973) exchanged for Nightmare Honeymoon(1973) - Once Upon A Time In America (1984) - or - Scarlet Street (1945)
I doubt there's enough interest on this board to exchang this entire list for another one that's related to it, but I thought it was worth a try. Maybe some of you will exchange 20 titles or so.

I would say, however: replace 'The Kid' with 'Modern Times'; some similar themes, but a deeper, longer and just as warm slice of Chaplin.I'd like to see "His Girl Friday" or "Bringing Up Baby" in there, but it's tough to find something they'd replace.

15. Persona (1966) exchanged for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)
― The Narwhal (the narwhal), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)
78. All the Real Girls (2003) exchanged for His Girl Friday (1940)
I haven't found a way to exchange Bringing Up Baby given the three criteria for exchange I listed above. Anyone else is welcome to find one.

I would exchange Saving Private Ryan for Band of Brothers, but that's not really a film

--the connection between Nashville and Wavelength is pretty tenuous, but I decided they could be interchanged for their exclusive use of camera zooms --
Anyone (please anyone?!) is welcome to contest my allowance and make an alternate suggestion of their own.

Back on the trail after a few days. I'm really beginning to like the alternate list. I haven't seen everything I've listed, like Vinyl (1965) and Wavelength (1967), but this is sort of a dream list. I'm not sure whether I would really like or be horrified by Vinyl anyway.
Sanjuro is my new favorite Kurosawa film, though. It's the movie I wish Leone had remade as a fourth Man With No Name movie. It would have been interesting to see what Eastwood would have done with a muted portrayal of Sanjuro.

I've noticed suddenly that I have a lot of movies on the new list from the 50's and 60's. I need some more early stuff.

100. Dumbo (1941) for The Three Caballeros (1945)
― The Narwhal (the narwhal), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)
This movie (ADATR) takes the hysteria meter and turns it up to 10. Fat men do the splits, a horse is ridden through an operating room full of water, a house shakes when people dance inside of it, a couple on a divan are covered by wallpaper as it is hung maniacally by Harpo and Chico... My favorite Marx Bros. that I've seen.

I've been watching too much MGM stuff from the golden period of the studio. I've picked an MGM release two nights in a row! Where's my self-respect? Where's my admiration for Iranian cinema? For Expressionist pictures? What am I doing choosing this sentimental tripe?
I can't really help it. While I don't know that Jonathan Rosenbaum ever really enjoys movies on a sub-anylitical level or free from socio-political labelling, he listed this among his 100 Greatest American Films and I don't think it's possible he chose it for its gender politics. It's just a whole lot of fun and startlingly colorful and beautiful with a Technicolor vibrance that hurts your teeth.
So, yeah, anyway, I liked it.

82. Kill Bill (2003, 2004) for Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx (1972)
I think it's an absolutely perfect trade off, seeing as how the whole Lone Wolf serial was a big influence on Kill Bill.
Why stop there?
90. Airplane! (1980) for Polyester (1981)34. Mean Streets (1973) for Paper Moon (1973)
I thought it might be good to have some Bogdanovich on the list as well as the Waters suggested by C-Man.

I can't really remember Song of the South (1946) that well. I saw it in the theater with some teenage girls when I was really young. I remember "Bluebird On My Shoulder", though.
Um, I'm flipping out45. Pulp Fiction (1994) for Slacker (1991)
Slacker and Pulp Fiction both feature rambling dialogue unrelated to the events of the film. It's a stretch, but I'm taking it. I considered Roma as a candidate, too, since I feel like Slacker is more of a portrait of Houston than anything else. Anyway, there it is.

2. Singin' In the Rain (1952) for Spinout (1966)18. Gun Crazy (1949) for Buffalo ’66 (Gallo, 1999)28. Manhattan (1979) for Playtime (Tati, 1967)29. Footlight Parade (1933) for Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)42. Swing Time (1936) for Top Hat (Sandrich, 1935)43. Marnie (Hitchcock, 1964) for Rope (Hitch., 1948)52. Solaris (1972) for Napoleon (Gance, 1927)66. La Jetee (1962) for Betty Boop’s Crazy Inventions (Fleischer,1933)95. The Cranes Are Flying (1957) for Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (Tashlin, 1957)
JUSTIFICATION:-Playtime is a love story to Paris (the human race) in the way Manhattan lauds its namesake.-Solaris was made in 1972. I switched the 2 and 7 around to fit in 1927's Napoleon.-La Jetee is a number of still images with narration. The Betty Boop cartoon is a number of still images sped up fast. I have way too many picks from 1933.
List B is about halfway to 100.
