Toon (Skelter), Friday, 21 May 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

this is a very tall order.

PVC (peeveecee), Saturday, 22 May 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Too tall for me too, at present! In the fullness of time, I might have a go, but not yet. It would always be an inadequate list, as there are so many likely great films that I have yet to see, but it would give an account of my taste, I suppose.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 23 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

DESTROY MY TOP 100 LIST!

I've just made this list off the top of my head, but I would like you guys to destroy and reconstruct it. The rules are as follows:

1. You may exchange any title for another from the same year.
2. You may exchange any title for another with a similar theme or
story.
3. You may exchange any title for another which shares the same word
in its title.

Please list your exchanges like this:

35. Mean Streets (1973) exchanged for Nightmare Honeymoon(1973)
-
Once Upon A Time In America (1984)
- or -
Scarlet Street (1945)

I doubt there's enough interest on this board to exchang this entire list for another one that's related to it, but I thought it was worth a try.

Maybe some of you will exchange 20 titles or so.

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Monday, 24 May 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a very formidable list; it'd require a lot of thought for me to feel able to tamper with it. ;) So many I haven't seen, too, so it wouldn't seem fair for me to take any of those out. "Footlight Parade" is a very perceptive choice indeed; the "By A Waterfall" Berkeley choreography is the most jawdropping instance of such that I have seen.

I would say, however: replace 'The Kid' with 'Modern Times'; some similar themes, but a deeper, longer and just as warm slice of Chaplin.
I'd like to see "His Girl Friday" or "Bringing Up Baby" in there, but it's tough to find something they'd replace.

Tom May (Tom May), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

OK -- So I'll start this deconstruction on my own. ( maybe I'll do it all myself).

15. Persona (1966) exchanged for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Following Tom May's suggestion:

78. All the Real Girls (2003) exchanged for His Girl Friday (1940)

I haven't found a way to exchange Bringing Up Baby given the three criteria for exchange I listed above. Anyone else is welcome to find one.

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

replace "day for night" (1973) with "spirit of the beehive" (1973)

spirit of the beehive is the most visually stunning movie i have seen. the images stick with you and it has the finest performance by a child... ever. ana torrent was amazing.

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

4. Magnolia (2000) exchanged for Short Cuts (1993)

I would exchange Saving Private Ryan for Band of Brothers, but that's not really a film

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

30. The Big Lebowski (1998) for Blue Velvet (1986)
43. Band of Outsiders (1964) for Dog Star Man (1964)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Thursday, 27 May 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

54. Night of the Living Dead (1968) for Vampyr (1932)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

23. The Seven Samurai (1954) for Harakiri (1962)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Saturday, 29 May 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

4. Magnolia exchanged back for short cuts (one of the worst films ever made)

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 30 May 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you wanting to put Magnolia back on the list? Short Cuts is one of my least favorite Altmans, but I think the switch will stand. There are so many other movies left to switch out. The point is to make a completely different list that is in some way connected to the first. It's all right if it's hit and miss.

That said:

85. McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) for El Topo (1971)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Monday, 31 May 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

68. Sunset Blvd. (1950) for Mulholland Dr. (2001)
73. Saving Private Ryan (1998) for Velvet Goldmine (1998)
26. Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974) for California Split (1974)
10. Jazz on a Summer's Day (1960) for The Last Waltz (1978)
24. Grey Gardens (1975) for Freaks (1932)
9. Sunrise (1927) for The Unknown (1927)
62. The Kid (1921) for The Playhouse (1921)
59. 3 Women (1977) for Eraserhead (1977)
47. L'Atalante (1934) for The Gay Divorcee (1934)
12. 8 1/2 (1963) for Sherman's March (1986)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

8. Bonnie and Clyde (1967) for Branded to Kill (1967)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

60. Punch-Drunk Love (2002) for Dracula: Pages From a Virgin's Diary (2002)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

27. Bambi (1942) for Fantasia (1940)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

99. Tokyo Olympiad (1965) for Vinyl (1965)
3. Nashville (1975) for Wavelength (1967)

--the connection between Nashville and Wavelength is pretty tenuous, but I decided they could be interchanged for their exclusive use of camera zooms --

Anyone (please anyone?!) is welcome to contest my allowance and make an alternate suggestion of their own.

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Thursday, 3 June 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

14. Ordet (1955) for Kiss Me Deadly (1955)
35. A Hard Day's Night (1964) for A Fistful of Dollars (1964)
36. Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) for Pull My Daisy (1959)
67. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) for Sanjuro (1962)
74. Cleo From 5 to 7 (1961) for Yojimbo (1961)
80. The Silence (1963) for The Birds (1963)

Back on the trail after a few days. I'm really beginning to like the alternate list. I haven't seen everything I've listed, like Vinyl (1965) and Wavelength (1967), but this is sort of a dream list. I'm not sure whether I would really like or be horrified by Vinyl anyway.

Sanjuro is my new favorite Kurosawa film, though. It's the movie I wish Leone had remade as a fourth Man With No Name movie. It would have been interesting to see what Eastwood would have done with a muted portrayal of Sanjuro.

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

put The Birds back damnit! :)

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ryan,
Maybe you're mistaken. I took The Silence (1963) out and replaced it with The Birds (1963). In the end they will both coexist peacefully in List A (above) and the transmogrified List B (which has about thirty titles on it so far).

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ok then! sorry!

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

75. It's a Wonderful Life (1946) for Imitation of Life (1959)
97. Jules et Jim (1962) for Carnival of Souls (1962)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Thursday, 10 June 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

18. Badlands (1973) for Gun Crazy (1949)
33. Moulin Rouge (2001) for Donnie Darko (2001)
43. Band of Outsiders (1964) for Marnie (1964)
55. Dead Man (1995) for Point Blank (1967)
87. Tokyo Drifter (1966) for Django (1966)
88. This Is Spinal Tap (1984) for Don't Look Back (1967)

I've noticed suddenly that I have a lot of movies on the new list from the 50's and 60's. I need some more early stuff.

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

... And one more

100. Dumbo (1941) for The Three Caballeros (1945)

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Monday, 14 June 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

92. Groundhog Day (1993) for A Day at the Races (1937)

This movie (ADATR) takes the hysteria meter and turns it up to 10. Fat men do the splits, a horse is ridden through an operating room full of water, a house shakes when people dance inside of it, a couple on a divan are covered by wallpaper as it is hung maniacally by Harpo and Chico... My favorite Marx Bros. that I've seen.

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

94. The Miracle at Morgan's Creek (1944) for Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)

I've been watching too much MGM stuff from the golden period of the studio. I've picked an MGM release two nights in a row! Where's my self-respect? Where's my admiration for Iranian cinema? For Expressionist pictures? What am I doing choosing this sentimental tripe?

I can't really help it. While I don't know that Jonathan Rosenbaum ever really enjoys movies on a sub-anylitical level or free from socio-political labelling, he listed this among his 100 Greatest American Films and I don't think it's possible he chose it for its gender politics. It's just a whole lot of fun and startlingly colorful and beautiful with a Technicolor vibrance that hurts your teeth.

So, yeah, anyway, I liked it.

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is The Godfather 1 and 2? Kurosawa? Midnight Cowboy? Amadeus overOne Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? The Exorcist and The Silence of the Lambs as great horror movies over Suspiria/ Texas Chainsaw/ An American Werewolf in London/ Night of the Living Dead/ Inferno/ Halloween/ The Thing/ The Blair Witch Project/ Dawn of the Dead/ Bride of Frankenstein et al? Close Encounters over Jaws? Saving Private Ryan over Schindler's List? Raiders of the Lost Ark over On Her Majesty's Secret Service or Goldfinger? Mr Smith goes to Washington over It's a Wonderful Life? No Disney at all (Song of the South/ Fantasia/ Lady and the Tramp and Pinnochio for starters)? Trainspotting over Shallow Grave? America Beauty at all? Eyes Wide Shut over Full Metal Jacket? Where is classic era Woo (Bullet in the Head/ The Killer/ Hard Boiled)? Goodfellas over After Hours or The King of Comedy? And you've not got any great, obscure cult choices in there!!!! No Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Polyester, A Boy and his Dog, Porky's, Spider Baby or anything that might indicate deviation from the norm!!! Must try harder. My choice is Baby Cart at the River Styx - that sits happily in my top 10.

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 27 June 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm assuming C-man's rant is targeted at Toon's list and not mine, but all the same, I'm happy for the suggestions. In keeping with:

82. Kill Bill (2003, 2004) for Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx (1972)

I think it's an absolutely perfect trade off, seeing as how the whole Lone Wolf serial was a big influence on Kill Bill.

Why stop there?

90. Airplane! (1980) for Polyester (1981)
34. Mean Streets (1973) for Paper Moon (1973)

I thought it might be good to have some Bogdanovich on the list as well as the Waters suggested by C-Man.

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Sunday, 27 June 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I'm swapping your Three Caballeros for Song of the South (1946)

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 27 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That's cool I guess. The Three Caballeros was actually a title I had swapped in, but this is all about deconstruction so it's cool to re-swap it.

I can't really remember Song of the South (1946) that well. I saw it in the theater with some teenage girls when I was really young. I remember "Bluebird On My Shoulder", though.

Um, I'm flipping out
45. Pulp Fiction (1994) for Slacker (1991)

Slacker and Pulp Fiction both feature rambling dialogue unrelated to the events of the film. It's a stretch, but I'm taking it. I considered Roma as a candidate, too, since I feel like Slacker is more of a portrait of Houston than anything else. Anyway, there it is.

The Narwhal (the narwhal), Sunday, 27 June 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
39. Rosemary's Baby (1968) for the Exorcist (1973)

Queen Electric Butt Prober BZZT!! BZZZZZT!! (Queen Electric Butt Prober BZZ), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
O.K. I've been gone for a while and thought I'd bring this thread back to life. The last post by Queen Electric Butt actually swapped a title from the first list by Toon which I have no jurisdiction over and am not recording. I do have some switches of my own, though.

2. Singin' In the Rain (1952) for Spinout (1966)
18. Gun Crazy (1949) for Buffalo ’66 (Gallo, 1999)
28. Manhattan (1979) for Playtime (Tati, 1967)
29. Footlight Parade (1933) for Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)
42. Swing Time (1936) for Top Hat (Sandrich, 1935)
43. Marnie (Hitchcock, 1964) for Rope (Hitch., 1948)
52. Solaris (1972) for Napoleon (Gance, 1927)
66. La Jetee (1962) for Betty Boop’s Crazy Inventions (Fleischer,1933)
95. The Cranes Are Flying (1957) for Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (Tashlin, 1957)

JUSTIFICATION:
-Playtime is a love story to Paris (the human race) in the way Manhattan lauds its namesake.
-Solaris was made in 1972. I switched the 2 and 7 around to fit in 1927's Napoleon.
-La Jetee is a number of still images with narration. The Betty Boop cartoon is a number of still images sped up fast. I have way too many picks from 1933.

List B is about halfway to 100.
