s/d, c or d etc...

i find miike a really frustrating filmaker.loved audition, thought ichi the killer was flawed but executed with a verve and energy that built up hopes that were subsequently dashed on watching happiness of the katakuris and the poor visitor q.
again, i thought happiness of the katakuris had its moments but was let down again and again by amateurish filmaking and an infuriatingly inconsistent sense of humour.

oh yeah and i havent seen dead or alive yet, so that might throw my opinion somewhere else entirely

inconsistent senses of humor are the future of filmmaking

I just interviewed him after watching most everything available in the US.

I think he might be brilliant.

City Of Lost Souls.

Of the ones I've seen, I'd rank 'em -

Ichi The Killer > Fudoh > Audition > City Of Lost Souls > Visitor Q > Happiness Of The Katakuris

Keeping up with Miike releases is almost a full time job. Of the more recent ones, Zebraman looks interesting, and I'm excited about his involvement in the next 'Three' film.

I meant:

happiness of the katakuris >>>> visitor q >>>> ichi the killer >>>> dead or alive >>>> audition >>>> gozu >>>> graveyard of honor >>>> rainy dog

Just saw GOZU

Pretty Miike.

Ian g, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm okay what would someone who's seen a decent portion of his stuff recommend....maybe a search destroy thread would ahve been better

David Steans, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It depends what you want from a film. He's pretty all over the map.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Visitor Q is his family/reality TC film (incest, mom lactation/heroin abuse, murderer Dad)

Happiness of the Katakuris is his Sound of Music musical with claymation and dancing zombies

Audition's his middle-age horror/sex film

Ichi the Killer his homerotic yakuza gore SM film

There's nothing he can't do stranger and technically better than most anyone.

Ian G, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

technically better than anyone? come one, by no stretch of the imagination is visitor q technically good.

David Steans, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think you're overreaching there. Technically, he is a pretty poor filmmaker, imo, and that's his appeal.

Watch Visitor Q again.

Right off the bat, it's compositionally superior to Lars Von Trier, who Miike is making fun of in much of the camerawork and at first, seeming misogynism.

Check out the lighting, how he frames things, the dolly shots and editing. The beautiful chromatic depth of scenes, his understanding of how to use the chromaric range and depth of field of DV--it was shot on an off-the-shelf, consumer digital camera--and then remind think that he did all this in *five* days.

Look at Audition, the subtle shifts in dynamics, the amazing range of lighting set-ups, framing devices, etc. (I think this one took a whopping 3 weeks to film.)

Dude, I'm not saying that Miike didn't have an influence in these things, but you might wanna at least share some of this credit with his DP, Hideo Yamamoto. I mean, I'm not telling you what to do or anything...

Isn't the new "hip" thing now in "discovering" under-PR'd crew members' work?

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I blame Christopher Doyle.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That damned Doyle!

Sure--the DPs deserve props. But he uses different people, he has a very firm grasp of camera and lighting technique himself.

Surely they add lustre, but Miike sets the basic imagistic design.

As for under PRed crews--I cannot stand the "a film by" credit line. Unless, say, it's Cronenberg--someone who writes, produces, directs his stuff.

one month passes...
He's best movie is Dead Od Alive 2, simply brilliant story about childhood. Rainy Dog, Lay Lines, Graveyard Of Honour, Dead Or Alive, Audition, Fudoh, City Of Lost Souls, Gozu and Visitor Q are also masterpieces. Ichi The Killer, Katakuris and Birdpeople Of China are OK. Andromedia is fun. I watched half of his work, maybe... Can't wait to see Izo, he's latest collabo w Takeshi Kitano...

velimir, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

that does look like something special, doesn't it?

David Steans, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
I usually don't plug myself (um) but my Miike interview/career retro is in the new Fangoria. Came out quite well, check it out if you like. Some prime quotes.
