Thread inspired by watching Apocalypse Now redux on IFC. Are director's cut necessarily better? Which ones aren't?

Search: Once Upon A Time In America, Das Boot

Destroy: Blade Runner (sorry, but that unicorn scene HAS to go), Aliens (the prelude with Newt's parents takes way too long. keep the robot guns though)

JFK's director's cut turns an already histrionic film into a mind-bogglingly hilarious mess with only a couple of extra scenes.

I thought that the Blade Runner director's cut was great! Getting rid of all of those voiceovers made for a big improvement over the old version.

I don't remember what exactly was changed in Blood Simple (apart from adding the hilarious new intro). Apocalypse Now Redux was really unnecessary - the extra stuff (the French plantation scenes, in particular) made the movie lose its momentum. I like the Blade Runner director's cut, particularly because it cuts out the happy ending (Rachael doesn't have a termination date! How utterly convenient and delightful!) And let's not forget Brazil - I remember seeing the "love conquers all" version on TV and being rather confused and upset.

No mention of Star Wars and the infamous Han Solo/Greedo scene?

Director's cuts are classic when they are supressed by studio or ratings board interests.

They are absolute destroy when tacked on later, are excessively long without good cause, are fan-only versions, or are reconsiderations.

Ugh, I forgot about the "special edition" of Close Encounters

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

And let us not forget E.T. either.

What are the most wanted director's cuts?

I'd love to see The 'Burbs recut by Joe Dante, as well as Scorsese's original cut of Gangs of New York.

Anthony (Anthony F), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna see Scorsese's original sound cut of GoNY with all the contemporary source music he was gonna use. Other than that, no amount of re-editing can save that film.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to see the original david lynch cuts. 4 hours of blue velvet, 6 of fire walk with me. yum

todd swiss (eliti), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I really must admit I think Gangs of New York is a very good film, albeit immensely flawed.

three weeks pass...
I've only seen the director's cut of Pulp Fiction, which I loved; how much was added/altered?

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a *director's cut* of pulp fiction?!

piscesboy, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there is only a "Special Edition" of Pulp Fiction, which is the same as the Theatrical Version, but has some nice packaging. How to top perfection anyway.

Alien was unnecessary, but harmless. Aliens was great. Blade Runner was an improvement (excepting the unicorn).

Really unneccessary - Terminator 2

What the hell were they thinking - Waterworld.

Would love to see - the semi-mythical 6 (?) hour Lynch Dune, which I imagine would still be a mess but a beautiful mess.

DFM (DFM), Thursday, 22 July 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Trust me, having tried to slog through the unauthorized version, there is nothing in there worthy of six hours.

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Spielberg's cut, but that's 'cuz he's a Jew. And I'm betting Scorcese has a foreskin like a down parka.

!

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I remember them showing the many-hour-long version of Dune on the Sci-Fi channel like 10 years ago.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Saturday, 24 July 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly something I should look forward to rather than endure.

Can't believe I forgot the mention the LoTR SE's. Should be the standard for this kind of nonsense.

xpost Terminator 2

I just saw a Special Edition DVD of T2 this weekend, and there was no option except to watch it with all the deleted scenes added in, and boy are there some deleted scenes!! It was easily 3 hours incl. the new scenes, and none of them were necessary whatsoever. The pacing was all off..so annoying!!

Richard K (Richard K), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Extended Fellowship: Better than theatrical cut.

Wxtended Two Towers: Worse than theatrical cut.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean Extended Two Towers: Worse than thatrical cut.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's too bad that the director's cut of Kill Bill was released to theaters! The most trivial 4-hour film since Liz & Dick in Cleopatra.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's too bad that the director's cut of Kill Bill was released to theaters! The most trivial 4-hour film since Liz & Dick in Cleopatra.

Has anyone verified the existence of a 3hr cut of both movies put together? I "heard a rumor" that this cut was shown in Japan.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get the Japanese cut from www.superhappyfun.com
