Down by Law - somewhat overrated (let's face it, a lot of Jarmusch is...), but still great. A nice tale that doesn't seem to bog itself down too much in the typical "needs" of plot devices, and perhaps the best cinematography of the decade.

Cleo from 5 to 7 - a nice film I can look back at and smile with, even if I barely remember it two or three years later. Light but still filling.

"Cleo" struck me in college, and when I saw it again about 2 years ago, as anything but light. I prefer it to most '60s Godard features.

DBL is my favorite Jarmusch, and maybe the last time Benigni was transcendent. Robby Muller has DP'd lotsa great stuff, from Fassbinder to Hollywood.

Junior Bonner is nice, understated Peckinpah and McQueen (and Ida Lupino).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

DBL is probably my favorite Jarmusch. I especially like how the introduction of Benigni's character switches the movie at the halfway point from gritty drama to bizarre comedy.

uhhh... I get the switch.. but Tom Waits and John Lurie doing deadpan riffs is gritty drama? I seem to recall it was like Beckett meets Laurel & Hardy... or Laurel & Laurel. Then Benigni changes is to commedia dell'arte.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever. I am no film buff, I am the drunken populace.

I love "Down By Law". It's one of the few films that can have a rock star actor, cameo or lead, that doesn't seem ridiculous (i.e. Jack White in Cold Mountain).

I'm terrified to see "Coffee and Cigarettes," though. The trailer looks frighteningly bad.

Anyone who hasn't seen "Fishing With John" needs to run out to the video store right now--it's hillarious.

Cleo is it for me, and then only in a film class in college! i remember liking it. moderately interesting.
