movies that start bad, but become really good by the end.

What are some movies that seem bad or just a little slow at the beginning, but as the story progresses it just keeps getting better and better?

a few I can think of:

Boy and his Dog
Narc
Chaning Lanes
Devils Advocate

While Russian Ark didn't really start badly, it definitely picked up after all the painting-smelling.

I'll certainly second Deep Rising and Limbo here. And the classic for me was Ratcatcher which I though was turgid shite until halfway through when suddenly it transformed into an excellent film.

I'm not sure if Russian Ark ever got good, but your right that the last half hour is a lot more interesting to watch.

You didn't like the opening of Ratcatcher? I thought it was great!

How about Stranger than Paradise? Most of the movie is intolerably slow. Then, about five minutes before the end, things get interesting, and then IT ENDS WITHOUT RESOLUTION. I'm glad this movie exists, and I enjoy thinking about it, but I probably couldn't stand to see it again.

also deep impact - ok it doesn't get "really good" but it's like they took that d.f.wallace "blockbusters=porn" essay as not only valid, but a great suggestion. i can't believe what a massive fuck-you the whole thing is - "what is the absolute critical-mass breaking point of manipulative tearjerker sentimentality? oh i know let's use THE END OF THE WORLD. haha and call it DEEP IMPACT!!"

Ceux qui m'aiment prendront le train (Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train). Of course, this is quite intentional: there are so many characters and their relationships are so complex, at first you haven't got a clue what's going on. In the end, and only then, everything ties up.
