How friendly is this place to Lefties? 329 down the right field line.... nothing too outrageus, da?

Just the other day I posted that pitcher Randy Wolf goes 2 for 3 with 2 homeruns. Yesterday, JT Snow goes 3 for 3 with 3 ding-dongs. AJ Pierzynski also gets one too. Bonds hits the only 2 strikes he sees all night = one for a HR, one hit the wall in right so hard it caromed back into the infield shift.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a nice stadium but the seats are too expensive. Doesn't seem entirely kind to righties, which is weird because although he's a leftie it always seems like Jim Thome's popping up to the opposite field.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 14 August 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

from the diagrams/stadium plans it looks fairly symmetrical.

i checked thome's home/road HR splits and they're fairly even.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 14 August 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

you can see how many cheap HRs he's had here http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/stats/mlb_individual_player_hitting_chart.jsp?playerID=123272&statType=1 tho it doesn't work for me.

i think the stadium sux and hitters are spoiled little whiners. (see: petco park)

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 14 August 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish had seen highlights of Phil Nevin's anrgy outburst toward the owner's box at Petco last week.

mattbot (mattbot), Saturday, 14 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it's way better than the Vet, at least in terms of fan comfort.

hstencil (hstencil), Saturday, 14 August 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going Sept 4 for what has a chance to be a meaningless Phils-Mets game...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

have fun! It's a bit gimmicky/theme parky (as is the style these days) but I thought otherwise it's good, nice sightlines, etc.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, all of baseball to thread. for what it's worth, i don't see the big problem with shea--apart from the planes, it's a nice place to see a ballgame.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

er, it's ugly?

hey, i'll be there on the 27th as part of my friends' baseball-related road trip ... which, naturally, FOX totally threw a wrench in when it decided that saturday's cards-pirates game was national tv worthy. GRR I HATE YOU FOX

How close the best cheesesteak place in Philly to CBP?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

They have a Geno's in the park. The Pat's/Geno's cheesesteak Mecca (also: where the Mumia incident transpired) is in South Philly (9th/Passyunk) but my ex-roomate was very disappointed I didn't get to Jim's (his preference) last time I was there.

Let me see if I can get a philly local over here to direct traffic.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i have yet to go there, but i know plenty who have. everyone loves it -- the sightlines are great all around [even in the cheap seats!], choosing to include local food establishments inside the park, etc. there's a couple articles about the space that are good but i cant remember where they are on the interjawn.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

maria,

how far is a jim's/pat's/(authentic) geno's from the CBP? let's say Dr. Morbius wanted to take a field trip?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

even though both are in south philly, its definately a walk. and through some rough neighborhoods to boot. you're probably not going to have a bike on you so i suggest the following:

Broad Street Line to Tasker-Morris
Walk on Tasker, going East to Passyunk Avenue
Turn left on Passyunk, go about 4-5 blocks

this sounds like a cliche: but you cant miss it. geno's has huge neon flames on its facade, pats is diagonal to that and there's a baseball field right next to them.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

ps: the BSL is available at pattison avenue, which is right by the stadiums / wachovia center/ etc.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you maria, you are a treat!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, you gotta take the BSL.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

maria otm.

also, jim's is not in that pat's/geno's mecca of cheesesteak. it is on south street, which can be reached from the ballpark via the broad street line to south street, then a good hike east to the corner of 3rd and south (about 11 bloocks). i'm pretty sure there's a bus that runs right along south street, too.

south street, from about 8th to front street, is sort of a philadelphia cultural destination, with shops and eateries and freaks galore. it's advertised as the counter-cultural center of the city. (which i view with cynicism) but it is a good place to kill a couple hours in the city.

the leglo (the leglo), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

you can go to Zipperhead, if that's your thing.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i didn't mean to say that Jim's was near Geno's/Pat's (and reading back I never did) but i meant to say that roommate was disappointed i chose those two over Jim's.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks all. I will be going via Amtrak (I guess) and the BSL.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a decent soul food place (forgot the name already) that serves takeout in the 30th Street Station.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

lest you forget, depending on the approach you take to cbp, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the rocky statue.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

not from underground! More likely to see it on the Amtrak coming into 30th Street.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

btw the Art Museum is great! Nice Duchamp collection, for starters.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

wait this is ILB, I shouldn't talk about such stuff.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

bake mcbride stripped bare in the batters box, even.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

they have that there, duder!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i know i've been there foolio iglesias.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just saying for the benefit of ILB readers who are art fans and have not been to Philly, bro!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no shame either, i ran up the steps singing the song much to the chagrin of many of the patrons.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha they had it blocked off for some 4th of July thing.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't make me stay in Philly for 2 nights! just add a mention of the Mutter Museum! I'd prefer to make a jaunt late next month to Montreal for a first and last look at Les Expos in the Big Owe.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

jims: not good at all. and its packed with tourists. at least with pats/genos, you'll catch a good cross section of townies and south jersey types. lots of hilarious people watching, at 4AM!

south street: if you go to eat there, try maoz. its a falafel place that serves it up cheaply and has a fixin's bar. otherwise, south street is only good for record shopping [spaceboy, phila record exchange] and coffee [supreme bean]. best place to grab a bite to eat in the area is the royal tavern, on passyunk, a few blocks south of south.

sights: nat'l constitution center, mutter museum, phila museum of art, institute of contemporary art, the gallery.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

if they get bake mcbride or john kruk to disembowel larry bowa at 2d base, then i will make the trip down.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 20 August 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Wound up just taking the train and ex-roomie's car to Philly for a 6-hour stay -- we were there a half-hour before Ashburn's Alley opened. I found the Geno's cheesteak (provolone & onions) underwhelming.

Watching BP was the highlight... David Wright is virtually the only Met worth watching before or during a game at this point. Vance Wilson scolded an autograph-seeking girl not to ask him while she's wearing a Yankee cap. Unfortunately there was a game, the Mets' 8th straight loss, 7-0 (mustering 3 hits vs Cory Lidle). Sat in short RF, upper deck.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Good Dr., a proper cheesesteak requires "whiz".

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, next time I will whiz.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Im making a trip to philly this summer. Anyone have thoughts on what seats will get the most bang for my vacation/beisbol dollar?
