Appearances: 9
Innings Pitched: 12

On Base allowed: .422
Slugging allowed: .390
On Base + Slugging allowed: .812

RA: 7.50* (look at this game and tell me why he can give up 3 hits (plus the lead off runner getting on via error) in one inning, eventually every baserunner scores and he is not charged a single run.

sometimes it happens.

I also don't get that box score. There is no errors or passed balls that indicate why the runs would be unearned.

E: C. Izturis (7)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 August 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

that is very creative scorekeeping, basically saying that izturis should have thrown the runner out and the inning would have ended had gagne not had a baserunner. so the three guys who do get singles off gagne and score are completely incidental and should be chalked up to cesar izturis, not gagne.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 August 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen an error on the first play lead to nothing but unearned runs. Usually just the first run would be unearned, right? Only when the error occurs with two out and then runs score does it seem logical to charge the pitcher with no earned runs.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Amen to that. I'm really surprised, given the haphazard consistency of "official scoring", folks (outside of the obvious circles) don't track straight-up run average.

You do realize, though, that this sort of red-flagging is what lead Jerry Manuel to fuck w/ Keith Foulke.

I so knew this was a gygax thread.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

well, the strikeouts are down quite a bit but he is throwing strikes. probably just some fluke.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, even if gagne fails they still have this guy http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7395 acquired from the YANKEES in the kevin brown trade.

would have been a nice replacement for mo in 2-3 years.

The next Clemens?

After a broken bat single, Gagne picked up the barrel of the broken bat and angrily hurled it off the field.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 August 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yhency Brazoban is teh best baseball name ever.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 20 August 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not a name, it's a spam subject line!

A portion of Gagne's streak was luck. He's still a fine reliever, unless these reports of lost speed are true.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

also something to consider: lo duca calling the pitches?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Clemens bat meltdown was minor compared Rob Dibble's famous melt down against the Cubs where he hit Doug Dascenzo with a pitch, then next batter Dawson in the back while he was running to first on a bloop in front of the mound, then literally ripped his jersey off leaving the field after being ejected in the near brawl that followed and to top it off then tossed a bunch of bats on the field on his way out of the clubhouse.

That is the most grand mal reliver meltdown that I ever.

Interesting point on ESPN's fantasy spin:

But, and I don't think last night had anything to do with this, have the Dodgers made this Gagne bump in the road possible because they lost Paul Quantrill to the Yankees, traded Guillermo Mota to Florida (ironically, he won last night's game) and overworked brittle Darren Dreifort so much he broke down?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Friday, 20 August 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

he is probably going to throw a year-high # of pitches this month and the highest since august of last year (which makes sense because he's having trouble getting guys out for the first time since he became a reliever), but is he being overworked? looks to me like his workload, in terms of appearances, is quite a bit less than last august (during which month he had a .52 era).

probably just a random blip on the radar.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 20 August 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

...and it happens again...

Wow.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Saturday, 21 August 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

according to a dodger fan friend, that 101mph fastball is clocking in at 92mph and he's shy about throwing the curve.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 21 August 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw it hit 95 last night, but i only got to watch for one second.
