Or, the declining value of baseball cards? This set was worth $200 in 1986 when I was 11 - now it's a fraction of that.

Same reason why comics aren't worth more than cover price anymore -- market saturation. Possible the late 90s glut might've indirectly affected the interest/value of earlier cards as well by turning collectors off in general.

certainly there was market saturation from anything beyond the 90's. but i think a decline in the general interest of card collecting has resulted in the lowering value of older cards. maybe in another decade we'll see better economic times and a sparked interest in collecting. that's when i sell, sell, sellĀ”

counterfeiting and market saturation killed the baseball card market. you need to get your cards grade/authenticated these days which is costly ($5/per) but if you have pristine, centered, sharp-cornered, virtually untouched/unhandled cards... it can pay off with a high grade.
