Instead of threads for every team why not one big thread for this mediocre division.

Go Padres!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 20 March 2006 04:50 (twenty years ago)

Ned is gonna ride Depo's troops to the promised land (and then lose in the first round).

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 20 March 2006 04:51 (twenty years ago)

I hope so. I think LAD will do fine this year, but Im cursed with preseason optimism. I thought we'd do well last year but we all saw how that ended now didnt we?

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 00:34 (twenty years ago)

There are two (TWO) SF Giants fans holding it down in ILB. The rest of yalls can rep this thread.

c(''c) (Leee), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 00:56 (twenty years ago)

I thought we'd do well last year but we all saw how that ended now didnt we?

Injuries up the wazoo and still within striking distance at the end? Coulda been worse.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 06:03 (twenty years ago)

dude, i want to know how the absence of the taco king will adversely affect offense in the nl west this year.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Hee Seop Choi: On the Bubble
RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Wednesday, March 22, 2006
Update: Choi might not make the team's Opening Day roster, reports the LA Daily News.

Recommendation: The Dodgers could theoretically release Choi if he clears waivers, thereby enabling them to pay just $178,000 of Choi's $725,000 contract. James Loney is set to be Triple-A Las Vegas' first baseman, so a minor league demotion appears unlikely. Look for Choi in another uniform come March 29th.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 22:32 (twenty years ago)

I hope the A's get him.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

we should trade him for an rp so we can have 16 relievers to match our 4 shortstops.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 23 March 2006 03:17 (twenty years ago)

I miss the old NL West.

SD
LA
Cin
Hou
SF
Atl

Back when I was a kid, it seemed the only time the Reds were on TV was when they went out west to play LA, Houston or SF.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 23 March 2006 04:15 (twenty years ago)

Nice NL West roundtable:

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 23 March 2006 18:23 (twenty years ago)

The Padres are starting the season with Chris Young, Chan Ho Park, Shawn Estes and Dewon Brazleton in the starting rotation. Peavy may be the best young pitcher in baseball (or he may not be), but that is the worst 2-5 I can remember. Young is nice but hard to say what he does in his second year. Something awesome? Regression? He would be the fifth starter on half the teams in the league.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 23 March 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

HEE SEOP
RED SOX
RIGHT NOW

Whoa - Brazleton MADE the starting rotation?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 23 March 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Made the rotation over Woody Williams, Chad Hensley and Tim Stauffer. I don't understand the world anymore.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 23 March 2006 18:45 (twenty years ago)

B Webb @ COL through 6 today:

13 groundballs - 1 flyball (5 hits). If AZ could ever upgrade their infield Webb wins Cy Young.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 3 April 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Jason Jennings gets the crucial RBI and is on pace for 162 of those bad boys!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 3 April 2006 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Of course that presupposes that he will pitch every game for the Rockies (which might not be a bad idea).

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 3 April 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

More surgery for Gagne...

Jeff LeVine (Jeff LeVine), Friday, 7 April 2006 01:18 (twenty years ago)

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks don't look too shabby. If only they had a bullpen...

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 7 April 2006 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Gagne is reaching Dreifortian levels of getting paid to sit around in a hospital.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Pitching with pain all March? What a douche.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

I blame the Canadian health care system.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 7 April 2006 22:16 (twenty years ago)

How can I ensure that the Padres only play the Marlins for the remainder of this year.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Trade Rockies games for Marlins games? Please?

tylero (tylero), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

During Colorado's 3 game sweep of the Padres at Petco, both teams combined for 44 Runs on 67 Hits.

During the rematch, Josh Barfield just got the first hit of the game in the top of the 4th at Coors.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 00:16 (twenty years ago)

13-4. Nicely done, Chan Ho.

I wonder if the Padres will re-sign Park next year. If he can be re-signed for, say, $3mil/year or less, I wouldn't mind keeping him around.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 21:54 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
Rick Suttcliffe was a surprise guest on wednesday night's Padres broadcast. He was verrrrrrry drunk, and eventually had his mic cut. haha.

tylero (tylero), Friday, 12 May 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

how could they tell?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 12 May 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

His breath smelled better?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 12 May 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I like drunk Rick Sutcliffe.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 May 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

These stats are two days old and they might not hold up, but the NL West isnt as shitty as it used to be.

.526 NL West (90-81)
.515 AL East (86-81)
.512 AL Central (86-82)
.512 NL Central (105-100)
.468 AL West (65-74)
.457 NL East (75-89)

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Friday, 12 May 2006 16:44 (twenty years ago)

It's mostly mediocre now, true.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Lacking a Kansas City or Pittsburgh or Florida helps.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Lacking a Kansas City or Pittsburgh or Florida helps.

Last year we had two of them though. Our Kansas Cities seem to have become Milwaukees overnight.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 12 May 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

If the Padres maintain their current pace, they will play the Cubs about 140 times this year and win 130 of them, which I think would be a record.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

It seems to be impossible to lose to the Cubs.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 13 May 2006 23:25 (twenty years ago)

The entire division is over .500 right now!

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 18 May 2006 05:33 (twenty years ago)

PARITY!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 18 May 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Best division in baseball!

Well not really, but hey.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 18 May 2006 14:44 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Hey wow it sucks again now! San Diego 2 games ahead in first, the rest of the division barely clinging to .500.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

I know what you're saying but help me out here:

How exactly does a division where not a single team has a losing record "suck"?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

Give it time, my friend. We're regressing to the mean here.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, it's called "Interleague". All will be fine next week.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

As of now, the NL West has the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, and and 10th best records in the NL. The NL East has the 1st, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

The AL West has the 6th, 7th, 9th, and 12th best teams in the AL.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 22 June 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

The Cubs and Pirates being in the NL Central should complicate the worst division debate all year.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 22 June 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

I love how the Rocks have been whooping up on the AL competition.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 22 June 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

The NL West is like kissing your sister. (And I do mean yours.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 June 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

Sheehan at Prospectus on the 'new' Coors:

I would be wary of reading too much into any advanced analysis of the Rockies, either as a team or as individuals. Coors Field is playing so differently in 2006 than it has previously that any introduction of a park adjustment into the work is potentially confounding, whether you use a one-year factor (small sample, possibly skewed) or a multi-year factor (may not reflect the current run environment). It’s clear that using a humidor to store the baseballs used in Denver has had a greater effect in 2006 than it had previously,

Slipping off my analyst’s cap for a second, can I ask whether this is such a good idea? If it’s possible to make the park at 5200 feet a neutral one, isn’t that going too far? And if so, should we be doing the same thing at the other end of the spectrum, adjusting the balls used at Safeco Field and Petco Park and Comerica Park to create league-average offensive environments? The prevailing idea that low-scoring games have some moral superiority to high-scoring ones makes that notion a non-starter, but have we ever considered that part of that viewpoint is due to the preferences of the opinion makers, rather than the fans? High-scoring games tend to run longer and make life harder for writers at the game, people who are working on deadlines and already travel-weary. Not that I don’t enjoy a snappy 2-1 game myself, but I also enjoy a slugfest, and I’ve never heard of a fan who’s just enjoyed a 12-10 barnburner complaining about its length. We know that attendance correlates fairly well with run-scoring (higher is better), so why is Coors Field a better place to watch a game now that the baseballs are being kept wet?

I wonder how much of the idea that low-scoring pitchers’ duels are a better brand of baseball than their counterparts is solely a print-media creation, the end result of a vocal segment of the baseball world’s desire to get copy into the appropriate edition without stress and get the work day over. I don’t think that’s the only reason, but I think it’s a significant contributing factor.

I think homogenization is bad, and I believe that unique environments are good for the game. That Coors Field is no longer playing like one is a loss for us as fans.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

It's probably keeping the Colorado pitchers:

A) Healthy
B) Sane

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

It also makes it possible to hire players, who as hitters carry a stigma that their performance is inflated no matter how well they play, and pitchers believe that they will basically be out of the league by the time they're finished in Colorado. The conceit that "this won't kill your career" is pretty helpful from a management perspective.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

i don't buy the humidor thing. they used it in previous years, people.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

MLB exec not amused by Macha's humidor remark
Thursday, June 22, 2006

(06-22) 04:00 PDT Denver -- Ken Macha's statement Tuesday that there should be "an investigation'' into the humidor-stored baseballs at Coors Field didn't go over well with Major League Baseball's executive vice president for baseball operations.

Macha's comments weren't altogether serious, but that didn't mollify Jimmie Lee Solomon.

"How about foot in mouth?'' Solomon told the Rocky Mountain News when it was suggested that Macha's remarks were somewhat tongue in cheek. "I don't know why people would say things without knowing the facts. They have balls stored at Rawlings' suggested storage level of 70 degrees and 50 percent humidity. It's the same levels that Rawlings (uses to store) the balls at its plant in Missouri. The balls are taken out at game time and rubbed up. Every Friday the Rockies taken out a random dozen baseballs and they are tested and they send the test results to us. ... I think this is the wave of the future. We will talk about (putting humidors in other parks) at our major league operations meetings.''

Macha said that the humidor topic was getting a little old, but that the balls certainly feel as if they have more moisture. Macha mentioned that the A's used balls they'd brought with them for batting practice, and they were flying out of the stadium.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 23 June 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

the balls certainly feel as if they have more moisture

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Friday, 23 June 2006 23:48 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe his palms were sweaty?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 June 2006 23:54 (nineteen years ago)

congratulations to the Colorado Rockies, the only team that consistently beat the AL during 2006 interleague play.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

Humidor woes in Colorado:

The Rockies are 26th out of 30 MLB teams in HRs hit, while their pitching staff ranks 1st in MLB in LEAST HRs allowed.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 17 July 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
hstencil and I are seeing SD's Clayton Hensley tonight, who very likely has been their 2d best pitcher after Chris Young this year; esp fine since the AS break.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

four weeks pass...
Dear Padres,

Please lose.

Love,
The Dodgers

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 7 September 2006 06:10 (nineteen years ago)

That's kinda their specialty, historically.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 7 September 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

The odds of SD and LA both making the dance are fairly good.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 September 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Wait-wait-wait a single second. Woah. Just hold on. The hell?

SOOOOOOOOOOOO...

Do you mean to tell me and the good people here that the odds of a team leading a division and a team leading the wild card race with 3 weeks to go are "fairly good"?

Listen, I've put up with your controverial/against-the-grain/contrarian opinions for a long time, but this is just over the top. Enough these sabrametrics and billy bean analyses. But no more. No longer will I suffer these injustices to the name of America's pasttime. You can take your fancy "stats", your 3rd order expected w/l, your pythagorean strength of schedule and just.... shove it. That's right, shove it buster.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 7 September 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Billy Beane counting?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 September 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Dr. Mobvious

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 7 September 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

Notobvious for Stuttdenka, you wakeboarding elitist.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 September 2006 17:56 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I guess Im not weighing in the Dodgers' propensity to fuck everything up at the last minute into my equation enough.

GIANTS AND MARLINS IN THE PLAYOFFS.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 7 September 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

Shades of 2003!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 7 September 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm....

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 9 September 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

HMMMMMMM....

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone else catch the Dodgers/Cubs game last night? If ever there was a game when I was rooting for both teams to lose, that was the one.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

I couldn't believe that the Dodgers could blow a 7-0 lead w/ their best pitcher on the mound.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Leeeee, Lincecum's call-up is pure rumor at this point. There has been no call-up registered to MLB by the Giants' office as of 9:30am.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, scouring the interwebs for confirmation, I believe my sources have failed me. </dumps out tea leaves>

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

But my guarantee still stands: WORLD CHAMPS OR NOTHING.

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Well, there goes the season.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Our 'best pitchers' dont like to wear that mantle for long. They prefer to fuck things up for awhile before the season ends. See: Penny, Brad.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, are there any NO HITTERS going on RIGHT NOW that I can SPOIL?

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Padres haven't had a no-hitter in their whole history.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

but dock ellis threw one against them while tripping, so that's got to count for something.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

Huge LA/SD showdown this weekend. I got jacked out of a ticket for tonight, but Im heading to the game on Saturday. I still cant believe how SD has fucking owned LA this season. The Dodgers can be a bunch of pansies for a 'first place' team.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Friday, 15 September 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be rooting for whoever is in second place.

REEL 'EM IN!!!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 15 September 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

Padres haven't had a no-hitter in their whole history.

Nor have they had a hitter hit for the cycle.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 15 September 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

The Padres have surpassed the Dodgers by a half game.

Philly is hot on the Dodgers 'tail in the Wild Card race.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 17 September 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand this Padres team at all.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 18 September 2006 04:59 (nineteen years ago)

Im at the point where I have to start looking at Grady Little to blame for all this piss poor play down the stretch.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Monday, 18 September 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

When in doubt, blame Depodesta.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 18 September 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah it's Grady's fault that the Dodger's can't hit to save their lives as of late.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 18 September 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Alex dont forget we must also blame Grady for the bullpen effectively blowing 3 games last week, too.

Perhaps we must blame Julio Lugo for all our problems.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Monday, 18 September 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

Chad(Madison, WI): With Pedro out, who do you got winning the NL pennant?

Rob Neyer: (1:05 PM ET ) I've recently become a Padres convert, after realizing that Peavy's still the great pitcher we thought he was a year ago.

Ken (Tarzana, CA): I'm seeing San Diego score runs lately. Is this a mirage?

Rob Neyer: (1:19 PM ET ) Here's something that might shock you (it shocked me) . . . The Padres are NUMBER 1 in the National League in road OPS. And they're No. 16 in home OPS. It's not that they can't hit, it's that their home ballpark wildly distorts their statistics.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 September 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

See, Hoffman's choke at the All-Star Game was long-term strategy to secure non–home field advantage in the WS!

c('°c) (Leee), Friday, 29 September 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

This is the best Padres team since 1998, for sure. And they should only get better next year with the cap space. Whee.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 29 September 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

SD has been hot as fuck this month, its just kinda strange to me that theyre getting it done with Todd Walker and Russ Branyan. But yeah, Roberts is having a good year, Piazza and Cameron were good pickups and the starting rotation and bullpen are solid. Kinda tough to argue with that. Im kinda hoping for an all NL west NLCS.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Friday, 29 September 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

i like the pads and the phils

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 September 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

SD has been hot as fuck this month, its just kinda strange to me that theyre getting it done with Todd Walker and Russ Branyan.

More surprising that they're getting it done with Blum and MANNY ALEXANDER at short.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 29 September 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

Hah. Touche. As a Dodgers fan I always wonder 'how in the hell do these Padres keep winning' but Im sure its likewise the other way around.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Friday, 29 September 2006 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

but Im sure its likewise the other way around.

I'm not surprised at all. If anything, I'm surprised by how poorly the Dodgers have played this year. I thought they'd win the west by five to ten games.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 30 September 2006 08:53 (nineteen years ago)

I hereby refer you to Mark Hendrickson to answer your questions regarding these 5-10 games.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Saturday, 30 September 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, terrible trade. Not like Navarro or Seo did anything for Tampa Bay, but Grady should just leave Hendrickson in middle relief if anything.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 30 September 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Alright, Boomer!
