featuring ryan "the real deal?" howard, the absence of ed wade and aaron rowand.

is madson's return to the rotation successful? is brett myers the man?

oh, wait...tom gordon's the closer.

Oh, wait... they're the phillies

HELLO DERE RYAN HOWARD HITS HOMERUN #10 OF SPRING TRAINING TODAY

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 24 March 2006 00:09 (twenty years ago)

yeah, uh, ryan howard's looking kind of scary. next homer breaks the phils' spring record.

I would love to know who he's eating tacos w/.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 24 March 2006 20:10 (twenty years ago)

btw...the phils have turned the phanatic red and have a new ad campaign focused on the slogan "red means go."

just awful.

good night and good luck.

How will MLB treat the 'record-breaker' if Rollins hits in 21 straight games?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 30 March 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

It took him until his last bat on the very last day, but Ryan Howard broke the Phillies' Spring Training for homeruns in spring training. His record-setting 11th homerun came off of Mike Bumatay.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 2 April 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

argh. 10-0 in the 4th. ugly.

Chuckles.

In other news, guess who just taco'd for the Phils! You'll be shocked and amazed!

Well, shit, way to start my rotisserie season off right, Charlie! It should only take Lieber a half-dozen starts to work his ERA into something reasonable, asshole.

Say it ain't so, Joe!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

wow...though it's kind of funny how he talks about every other major hitting record falling, then mentions ted williams' .406 ba. uhhh...

how about hack wilson's 190 ribeyes?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 14:46 (twenty years ago)

He only seems to mention .406 in the context of 1941 & Joe D's streak, & only to say that '41 would've been Ted's year were it not for The Streak. Unless you're reading other articles besides the one I linked.

Also, those ribeyes are dependant on having the meat out on the basepaths, & is primarily out of the hitter's control - after all, you can only get RBIs if there are guys to BI. Stuff like the HR record & season hit record & hitting streaks, on the other hand, are more dependant on the player's skills / chemical intake.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Screw steroids, they should strike all hitting records set in 1929-1931, when entire leagues were hitting .300. Maybe Bud should look into that too.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Coca Cola is one helluva drug.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

right, but the all time record for avergae in a season still stands and until sabr-metrics becomes the generally accepted standard for evaluating a player's skills, i would imagine that rbi will be considered a hitter's stat...in fact the only major hitter's records i can think of that HAVE fallen are all time hits and homers in a season. did someone (ichiro?) break the hits in a season record?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Ichiro did, but he did it in 162 games, not 154.

Damn, when Nady hit that ball i thought after a couple seconds, uh oh, it's Rowand. Apparently the padding arrives next week.

4-1/2 inning games still suck, though.

If Bowa had still been manager the last couple nights, his head would've exploded.

For a fearsome slugger, the rest of Ryan Howard's game sure sucks.

A sellout crowd of 45,102 was the largest of the season and second-biggest in the three-year history of Citizens Bank Park. It included thousands of Mets fans who cheered loudly for their team. Philly fans finally drowned out chants of "Let's Go Mets!" with the familiar chant of "E-A-G-L-E-S!"

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 15 June 2006 20:14 (twenty years ago)

seriously, what's the matter wif philadelphia?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 15 June 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

...though i must say, ryan howard is the man. don't really care if he's a butcher in the field.

(and as i expressed in los yanquis thread, larry bowa can eat a d***!)

Um, they're playing the best team in the league?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 15 June 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

"seriously, what's the matter wif philadelphia? "

It seems to me they are about the same as usual for the past half dozen years, they can score some runs, but the rest of their game is lacking especially starting pitching.

The Reds are the same way, they have litterally thrown away at least a half dozen games this year with their shoddy defense.

Phillies ace arrested in Boston on domestic violence charge
June 23, 2006

BOSTON --Philadelphia Phillies ace pitcher Brett Myers was arrested Friday and charged with assaulting his wife on a downtown Boston street.

Myers, 25, who was scheduled to pitch Saturday against the Red Sox, got in an argument with his wife at about 12:20 a.m. at the corner of Boylston and Dalton streets, according to David Procopio, a spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

Myers' wife, Kim Wickman, and two witnesses told police that the pitcher hit her.

"The evidence at this point leads us to believe the victim was struck in the left side of her face," Procopio said.

One of the witnesses told investigations that Myers also pulled her hair.

Police responded to a 911 call at 12:26 p.m. and found Myers' wife crying with a swollen face, Procopio said.

Officers found Myers nearby and arrested him. He cooperated with police, Procopio said.

Myers was booked by Boston police and his wife posted his $200 bail.

Myers pleaded not guilty to assault charges at his arraignment Friday morning in Boston Municipal Court, Procopio said.

A Phillies spokesman had no immediate comment.

Myers and his wife have a 3-year-old daughter.

Myers' next court date is Aug. 4. A judge ruled over the objections of prosecutors that he did not have to attend the hearing in person, Procopio said.

NO CRAZY HEADER

"I'm sorry it had to get public. Of course, it's embarrassing ... But my teammates have been great. They've been behind me 100 percent. That's all I've got."
--Phillies pitcher Brett Myers, charged with allegedly hitting his wife twice in the head outside their Boston hotel on Thursday night. (Boston Globe)

"He was dragging her by the hair and slapping her across the face. She was yelling, `I'm not going to let you do this to me anymore' ... She's a real small girl. It was awful."
--witness Courtney Knight

"It's a very sensitive issue, and I certainly think that anything that affects our players or affects the team, we take it very seriously. ... I don't know that it's an embarrassment."
--Phillies GM Pat Gillick (The New York Times)

"He had her on the ground. He was trying to get her to go, and she was resisting. She curled up and sat on the ground."
--Knight

"I think it's in the best interest of the club. He's our best pitcher."
--Gillick, on whether Myers would start against the Red Sox on Saturday.

"I watched him just haul off and smack her in the face ... This was violent. This was wrong."
--witness Sly Egidio (Boston Globe)

"I'm just going to give it my all every time out there."
--Myers, who allowed three runs on seven hits in his start.

Yeah, it's really too bad that had to happen out in public. If only he could've gotten her back to their hotel room, or maybe found some secluded alley where he could put her in her place properly.

see, this is what i've always thought...i think it's way bigger mark on professional athletics that dudes who beat up their wives or girlfriends don't get disciplined by their clubs. if you can flag use of drugs that a lot of folks can't afford as an detrimental to the game...well, you see where i'm going?

did anyone else know that larry bowa finished 3rd in the MVP balloting in 1978, including 3 first place votes?

gear (gear), Thursday, 27 July 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

I had forgotten, but that's the BBWAA for ya. He had an OK year, but scored 78 runs for a first-place team while playing 156 games, so that doesn't even make sense by contemporary standards. (another overrrated writer fave, Garvey, was a distant 2d to Dave Parker for MVP)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Arthur Rhodes blasted his now ex-teammate Cory Lidle, who told reporters after his trade to the New York Yankees that his former team did not care much about winning, the New York Post said.

"He is a scab," Rhodes said about Lidle, in reference to Rhodes saying that Lidle was a replacement player during the 1995 spring training lockout with the Milwaukee Brewers. "When he started, he would go 51/3 innings and (the bullpen) would have to win the game for him. The only thing Cory Lidle wants to do is fly around in his airplane and gamble.

"He doesn't have a work ethic. After every start, he didn't run or lift weights. He would sit in the clubhouse and eat ice cream."

i went to see the game at turner field on monday night and called both howard's and andruw jones' home runs. that was pretty much all i wanted to see as brett myers is now mud in my book (though at one point he gave a dude 94 mph gas and 77 mph offspeed junk the very next pitch...kind of impressive).

Just how seriously is Charlie Manuel (or whoever replaced him after he was ejected) taking the WC race if he leaves Moyer in to give up 7 runs to the Mets?

Still, they may be the favorite for the wild card -- this is their last series vs a team currently over .500.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 28 August 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Well, it's "only" 5 earned and the bullpen's a wreck. When does Wagner come in, he could still get the win...

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 28 August 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

charlie manuel is not very bright. i'm starting to think that most gm's have seen too many movies..."huh...this guy SOUNDS like a manager. hired!"
