Is 76-86 too optimistic?

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

jergs did you see this?

It is now time to fall in love with the King, Felix Hernandez

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I started it! It was my shining moment (admittedly that doesn't say much) on ILBB.

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I think he was referring to the Felix pics in the last post of the thread!

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Those pictures are great.

And the traditional beginining of season questions: Will Ichiro recover from a sub-par (for him) 2005? Will the young tandem at 2B and SS, Betancourt and Lopez, step up their offensive game? Will Felix continue to shine? WIll the other pitchers keep their ERA below 5 in that gigantic ballpark? And most importantly, will Hargrove prove to be anything other than a useless fat fuck?

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I think that Ichiro's 2005 will be the new norm for him, if not the high end. 2004 was the aberration.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

My question: whither Rafael Soriano!?!?!?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:20 (twenty years ago)

i just want to know what kind of name yuniesky is...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 24 March 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Mariners' Reed breaks wrist, will miss six weeks

Reed hit .254 for Seattle last season. (AP) Jeremy Reed, Seattle's starting center fielder, fractured a bone in his wrist Friday when he ran into the wall while making a catch.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 24 March 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

oooohhh... Hello Lawton, I guess, after the suspension.

According to the local papers, Soriano is back, at 95%, and will be half of the 8th inning setup, wtih Putz.

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 25 March 2006 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Kenji Johjima homers in his 2nd at-bat... not bad!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 3 April 2006 21:24 (twenty years ago)

jergins (jergins), Monday, 3 April 2006 22:08 (twenty years ago)

How's this for a double-pickoff double-play: 1-5-3-5

which one of y'all has Beltre on their fantasy team?

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:40 (twenty years ago)

the worst free agent signing ever?

gear (gear), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:28 (twenty years ago)

In his defense, he's actually picked up to Neifi-like proportions of late:

Apr .189/.284/.233
May .260/.307/.356

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

on the season juan pierre has a higher slugging percentage! (.304)

gear (gear), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

why not contract the seattle mariners?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

i spoke too soon! he had three hits today!

gear (gear), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

*furiously attempts to add Beltre to my fantasy teams*

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:58 (twenty years ago)

i'd feel sorrier for beltre if i couldn't help but notice how much skinnier he seems to be.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 20:59 (twenty years ago)

my friend lxy on hargrove: "we don't need a rain delay, human or otherwise."

what's he got left, a month?

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Hey King Felix got another win today.

Speaking of...

Looks like we're getting Moyer for the SABR game on the 30th.

Is the Safeco food really as great as this Jim Caple review from a couple years ago says?

http://espn.go.com/page2/s/caple/ballparks/safeco.html

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

IIRC, SafeCo is not far from the International District which has some world-class take-out.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Safeco food is pretty damn good, though of course expect to pay your standard inflated stadium prices.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 18:55 (twenty years ago)

So I hit an M's game on Extra Innings a few weeks ago ... what is the deal with their announcers? The play-by-play guy sounds stoned. The two had a hilarious OT conversation about sightseeing in Seattle with mr. pothaze concluding "you can take great pictures with those little disposable cameras." It was like riding the backseat of the Pulp Fiction mobile. Do they always go on at length about trivial things like they're the final unwanted guests still hanging out in the living room at 3:30 am?

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 22 June 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

you're probably talking about dave niehaus and ron fairly. neihaus is great, this rich deep voice 'loooooooow.' he'll talk about whatever he wants to. last year in boston he read off every piece of advertising at fenway. fairly tells stories about past years in the bigs, but will wander off into the wilderness and tell about his high school friends in jail and playing games in the snow. the other great thing about niehaus is that he doesn't feel the need to fill every moment, especially on tv. the two will go silent for 15-20 seconds.

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 22 June 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

the food at safeco is good, yeah. very various. and expensive. but, you are allowed to bring food in (though not drinks).

just stay away from the garlic fries: they smell awful.

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 22 June 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

That bit where Ron Fairly was talking about his friends in jail/out on parole was classic! He is often quite unintentionally hilarious. Used to always comment on the big, strong legs and thighs of players. Dave Niehaus is one of my favorite current announcers, both for his voice and his often less is more approach. Be nice if more of the commentators in baseball knew when to shut up.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Saturday, 24 June 2006 01:03 (twenty years ago)

just stay away from the garlic fries: they smell awful.

This is a minority view, but if I head to the Seattle Eagle afterward, I see yr point.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 24 June 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

I had the pad Thai at Intentional Wok (roffles).

I'm more impressed with Safeco than any new park I've been to; love the ushers holding returnees til the at-bat is over (tho I've heard Toronto does this), and I went and stood behind home plate for the last two innings -- great visibilty around the concourse.

Time of game 1:52 (fastest ever for a Rockies game)! How the hell Seattle got 2-hit by Josh Fogg in a 90-pitch complete game I can't figure. The 6th inning was 7 pitches, bringing his total at that point to 57.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 1 July 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

Actually very common on the west coast!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 1 July 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

was the sun was still up as the game finished? i couldn't tell from my neighborhood (other side of a hill) but i love the idea of a night game that ends before sunset.

And not only did Fogg 2-hit them, but he faced the minimum 27 batters!

jergins (jergins), Saturday, 1 July 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, one SABR member called that an NPG (near-perfect game).

The sun was indeed up at the end, a first for me.

(just had fish tacos at Lowell's)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 July 2006 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

They tried to do the "hold til the end of the inning" thing at Fenway and the small concourses got so packed nobody could move anywhere! Gave up that experiment soon enough ...

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 3 July 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Johjima leads all non-1B in putouts.

two months pass...
From today's game in TB (AP). I've never seen a triple play live or on tv, but this was my first on the radio:

The Devil Rays threw out two runners trying to advance during a first-inning triple play.

Seattle had Jose Lopez on third and Beltre on first when Raul Ibanez struck out on a 3-2 pitch. Adrian Beltre broke for second on the play, but pulled up short of the base when catcher Dioner Navarro's throw easily beat him to the base. Shortstop Zobrist caught Navarro's throw and took a few steps before tagging out Beltre as he headed back toward first.

Zobrist then threw home where Navarro tagged out Lopez on his attempt to score from third.

"His (Navarro's) throw down to the second was perfect," Zobrist said. "It led me straight into him where I could take it and just continue running and make the tag. I saw the guy taking off for home, so it's just snap, snap, just like that."

Devil Rays starting pitcher J.P. Howell said the play was "like a snowball fight."

"Threw a strike, and let them do it," he said. "I just watched the ball fly around."

According to SABR, it was the first ever 2-6-2 triple play in major league history.

jergins (jergins), Sunday, 3 September 2006 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

Not MLB, but another 2-6-2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2ZnQMV03iM

okay so 76-86 wasn't too optimistic. i'm surprised and actually a little bit impressed. but they're keeping hargrove. lxy calls him 'the human brain delay.' the local papers are all 'the pieces in place, add a coupla $14m dudes and we're off to the postseason.' right. so next year we're finally over .500 but no playofs? not exactly some grand upward trajectory. still, there are a bunch of dudes that could come into their own. i love that shit up the middle: johjima (with clement coming up towards the end of 2007), betancourt and lopez, and finally ichiro, right there in the middle where he was always supposed to be. add felix and matsuzaka/schmidt and some cheapies and an underrated bullpen and ballpark dimensions, get either beltre or sexson to hit more than their weights and bam, maybe just maybe we can catch up to the A's. i'm of two minds. huh.
