2006: still the year the Braves won't lose the division

I'd be entirely happy with a John Thomson for Craig Wilson trade, even though relief is more of a pressing need.

I fully expect to be about the only person here with a kind word for the Braves, excepting maybe Blount.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

No, I'm a total, unapologetic Braves fan, I just don't post as much. Life After Leo worries me, but it should at least be interesting.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

I'd say they're the favorite, just cuz the Phillies are the Phillies and Willie Randolph is a dope.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Go Nats go!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

and yeah, Leo is probably the biggest of many concerns. Although if there's anything behind the copious sorta-anti-Leo talk of the last few months, perhaps his absence won't be too sorely felt. At least with McDowell we know the dugout'll be at least 18% kookier.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

They really have been lucky, in that the rest of their division has been generally incompetent for so long. And as long as Cox and Schuerholz are there, I don't really see how anybody can count them out, especially after last year.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:05 (twenty years ago)

You can't count them out until the finally lose, period. Each of the past six or seven years was supposed to be the season when the NL East was wide open and the Braves couldn't *possibly* win again, and they did.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

But this year HAS to be the year they lose!

(Go Marlins!)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

The Braves are tricky for me because I've always hated "The Braves" but I've always liked just about every player on the team. John Rocker was easy to hate, but then the Braves got rid of him pretty quickly. I hate Chipper Jones for roughly the same reason most people hate Derek Jeter, but he's probably an okay guy.

But Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, and Andruw are all awesome, and I love all the new rookie kids.

Mostly I just hate the Tomahawk chop and the chanting and shit. Jesus.

Anyway, I don't think they're going to win again but it would not surprise me if they did.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:21 (twenty years ago)

You can't even count them out the year after they lose, because why would that matter? They're talented and have intelligent people in the right positions, and enough money to stay relevant.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

My #1 question is, does McDowell use the "Leo Method" regarding throwing between starts? If I were Schuerholz, I'd have been tempted to require it in a potential pitching coach.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

You can't even count them out the year after they lose, because why would that matter?

It's a bit like the Patriots in the NFL (until the loss to Denver) -- they went on a crazy run and always won somehow, so it seemed silly to assume that they would lose until they finally did.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

chipper jones is not an okay guy! i did like his comparing clemens to jesus 'cuz when he enters a lockerroom it's like the red sea parting'.

i became a braves fan gradually, despite myself - followed them sorta/mightaswell during the eighties when tbs would promote games 'watch gerald perry and the braves face off against eric davis and the reds', would probably toss a vote in dale's direction for the hof given the opp, really didn't care for the bandwagon in 91, they got enough players i liked (maddux, andruw, furcal)(basically bros that know how to party)(rip billy martin), go to enough home games and get a job where you're driving and hence listening to alot of braves games on the radio and pow - i'm a fan. have alternately winced at and embraced the chop (does that seminole approval carryover when it's a degree removed?)(even with deion long gone?). i hope the streak continues if only cuz i like being able to take for granted that every october i'm going to be able to go to some postseason games and that it's not gonna be too hard to get tickets. schuerholz's chapter on moneyball in his book is slightly smarter than yr joe morgans. slightly.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:09 (twenty years ago)

i hate it when fsu fans do it/chiefs fans did it too, but it somehow seems even lamer when braves fans do it.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Now granted, they're playing an NL West team, but this team looks very solid on Day 1. Their outfield is a combined 41 years younger than the SF Giants.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 3 April 2006 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Nope, aside from St. Louis, very few NL teams have the depth (or the payroll).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 3 April 2006 22:30 (twenty years ago)

The Braves pitching did not look too good today.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 3 April 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Holy Hannah, will this bullpen kill 'em.

And you gotta wonder what Thomson did for Cox to so utterly lose faith in him.

GOD DAMN PISS-GARGLING SONS OF BITCHES AT MLB HAVE EXPANDED THE BLACKOUT ZONES FOR "LOCAL" TEAMS... I LIVE FIVE HOURS + ONE TIME ZONE AWAY FROM ATLANTA AND APPARENTLY THEY THINK I SHOULD BE AT THE GAME IN LOS ANGELES NO LESS) INSTEAD OF WATCHING IT AT HOME.

DEVELOPING...

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 01:47 (twenty years ago)

That doesn't sound right - if you're in the Braves home market, you should have gotten the game on TBS (assuming that's who carried it), and in LA they would have had TBS blacked out in favor of the Dodgers carrier.

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 02:13 (twenty years ago)

DirecTV punted, said "the league and the teams tell us what to black out, sometimes on a game by game basis; sometimes we don't get word about what's blacked out until the day of the game." The game is on Turner South, a regional spinoff of TBS that has most of their games now. I've been watching Braves games on Turner South for years with no blackout, but suddenly this year the blackout zone has apparently expanded. Fucking MLB... they might sell a couple of Extra Innings packages to suckers with this stunt, but aren't they going to piss it all away in fan ill-will?

I'm on hold with MLB customer service now. (40 minutes and counting...)

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Probably gonna get rained out anyway.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 02:31 (twenty years ago)

So Turner South still exists? I wonder when the Fox takeover's gonna be official.

Turner selling out to Time Warner is maybe the worst thing to ever happen in this world ever. At least for wrestling/Braves/Andy Griffith fans.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 12:18 (twenty years ago)

A Turner South rep on their message boards says this was unforeseen, they're looking into it, and hopefully it was a one-time FUBAR.

In the meantime, anybody here lucky enough to have Oscar Villarreal on their fantasy team?

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 6 April 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Actually, yes, I've got Villarreal on a couple of my teams. Only been starting him in one league, though, but thankfully that's the one with the big prize.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 6 April 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

he's responsible for two of the three wins I have in that league.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 6 April 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

One of his wins came at the expense of a blown save...

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:11 (twenty years ago)

i've always been lukewarm/undecided on the braves. when i was in elementary school i would root for the twins or the blue jays or who the fuck ever to piss my friends off, lol. still, i saw a ton of those games on tbs with my fam, and they've had a lot of cool dudes on the roster over the years. i've always been undecided on chipper too, he seems like an asshole but i also find him kind of hilarious.

i pretty much stopped paying attn to baseball from like... 1998-2004, and even then i really didn't care much. i did end up listening to a lot of braves games on the radio last season (i just want to hear some fucking foghat you assholes), so I might end up getting into them more this year.

BUTT IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 04:51 (twenty years ago)

You picked a weird year for it.

I think they need to figure out how to keep Betemit in the lineup every day after (if) Chipper comes back. I wonder if he plays any right field, because Frenchy is a guaranteed out right now.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

I think there was talk of Betemit in left, so perhaps he could go there and Langerhans could hop over to right. Although I'd think they'd have to recall Kelly Johnson if they send Francoeur down, and he'd maybe get the start over Betemit.

They gave Mondesi six weeks last year. I wonder if they'll be as patient with their golden boy. Although last night he probably would have had a hit or two if it weren't for a good play and a fortuitous defensive alignment.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

They gave Mondesi six exquisitely agonizing weeks last year.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

i've liked the braves over the past several years a little more than i had previously through a combination of a) winning despite everyone thinking they were due for a third-place finish and b) julio franco

gear (gear), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:43 (twenty years ago)

kelly johnson is supposedly on the dl now.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

The Braves are not off to too slow a start considering how bad their starting pitching has been. Hudson has been terrible in his two starts and the rest of the gang not much better.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Okay, is it weird to have an off day in the middle of a 3-game series (instead of between series), or is it normal and I just haven't been paying attention?

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 00:34 (twenty years ago)

it's weird, but it's probably a union thing. i think you can't go more than 10 days w/o a day off?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking ESPN had something to do with it.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

An off day in the middle of a 3-game series is fairly common in the first 2 weeks, usually covering for postponement makeups.

jeff francoeur is really, really bad. they should trade him to some dumbass GM for a handful of prospects (i hear baltimore needs an OF?)

They could do Francoeur in a straight-swap for either Markakis or Corey Patterson and still maintain the local-boy-made-good spin.

FUCK BABY SURI I HOPE IT CHOKES TO DEATH ON HUBBARD WAFERS (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 14 September 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
The postmortem --

Search: Smoltz, Wickman, McCann, 2nd-half LaRoche, Andruw (but how much longer?)
Destroy: Larry, 1st-half LaRoche, most of the relievers
Improving: Frenchie (but I had to laugh when he said he might walk 50 times next year)

Any chance for improvement in '07?

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 28 September 2006 02:04 (nineteen years ago)

Destroy the most: Tim Hudson.

Most disappointing dude ever.

Definite chance for improvement in '07, but probably not enough to catch the Mets. If they had a decent closer all season, they'd probably have the wild card this year. If they can pick up a solid starter or two and find two or three reliable bullpen arms, they should be able to contend for at least the WC again next year.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 28 September 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

Also: Larry's been great, those three or four weeks he's been healthy. If he could scratch his ass without pulling a muscle he could've have a really great year, and not just the pretty good one he had.

But yes, if Larry can stay healthy next year, if Hampton and Ramirez can stay healthy and not completely suck, if LaRoche can keep his 2nd half going for a full season, if McCann's year is a sign of true greatness and not just a fluke, if they can find a guy to get to Wickman, and if Wickman can somehow keep from falling off that cliff he's been precariously perched on for years now, then the Braves should be pretty good next year.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

If he could scratch his ass without pulling a muscle

That's too much to ask at this point. I wish they'd have kept Betemit and found a sucker to take Larry. I wonder if Andruw will be dealt over the winter or if they'll wait until next July.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 28 September 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Judging by runs scored/allowed, the Braves were the unluckiest team in baseball besides the Indians.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't Francoeur likely to net the most, considering how generally overrated he still is? at least by the dummy GMs?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

I honestly think that the people above Schuerholz would ask him not to deal the homegrown golden boy, to keep butts in seats (what few they have). There's a subtle (or maybe not subtle) transference of the public face of the team happening, from the Jones Brothers, Smoltz, etc., to the new breed -- Francoeur, McCann, Langerhans, etc.

Or maybe I'm talking out my ass. Blount might be able to address that better than I can; all I see is the FSN crew anymore, and they've sucked all the fun out of the team.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 28 September 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

I'd be amazingly shocked if Francoeur got traded. Everything I've read in the Atlanta paper makes it sound like the organization is mostly blind to the kid's shortcomings. That shock would decrease if Delta finally goes out of business, or if Schuerholz retires soon.

I'd think Chipper is one of the most untradeable guys around. Oldish, oft-hurt, defensively subpar 3B's aren't really hot property, at least not when they're making $15 million a year. Plus he's restructured his contract twice now to stay with them longer and free up payroll space for folks like Renteria and Wickman, so I doubt he'd accept a trade even if the club could find a taker.

Now that Lester's got the cancer, what could they get from Boston that'd make an Andruw trade worthwhile? Buchholz, Hansen, and Crisp? Or maybe Buchholz and Ellsbury?
