perhaps you will have contributions of your own~~~

anyway i just got my drunk friend to agree to trading away Utley and Matt Holliday for Dan Uggla, Adrian Gonzalez, Jason Bay and Johan Santana. Johan's the only guy who isn't replacable imo, Utz & Holly are obv big upgrades over Bay and Uggla, and I have Konerko and the soon-to-be-1b-eligible Hafner on my roster to take over for Gonzalez. did i give up too much????????

cankles, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

yes. never trade away the best pitcher in baseball.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:50 (nineteen years ago)

Wait - your friend was drunk, or you were drunk?

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

Or were you hipdeep in a mound of meth?

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

please keep it to one fucking fantasy thread.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

Sometimes, as I am getting ready to play the game and to step onto the field, a fan will get my attention. He or she will be wearing the opposing team's shirt, hat, or jersey and will make a comment to me. Sometimes, it's "good luck"; sometimes, it's a lot harsher than that. But the most interesting one I've been hearing lately is "hit a home run" or "steal a base; you are on my fantasy team."

I guess it's an honor to be selected onto someone's fantasy team. But is the person still considered a true fan of the other team, if he or she wants me to do well? I'm not sure of the answer, but that thought has crossed my mind recently, especially after fans come up after games and thank me for getting them points in their league.

Fantasy baseball has really changed the course of how fans react to teams, plays and players. It's an interesting phenomenon. I don't think there's any doubt that fantasy sports help grow the popularity of the game, but does it help teams grow a more loyal fan base?

Some ask me to do different things to help get them points, and the only response I can give is that I can't control when Leyland lets me steal, or if I'm going to get a pitch I could possibly drive over the fence. But it has been funny and interesting. And if it helps my team win, then I'm always glad I could help your fantasy team out.

I'm actually surprised that my recent trade in the ILBB league went through without a hitch (obv i think I'm getting a ridonkulously good deal)!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure you are, but I have GOT to kickstart my offense, and looking at the available FAs, it seems good pitching is easier to come by than good hitting. The deal probably went through because nobody's paying attention, except maybe D5/M.C.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

i pay attention!

j.q higgins, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

I feel the opposite! and obv i have much more faith in Jones coming around and less in Mags keeping up his current pace.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

"Utz & Holly are obv big upgrades over Bay and Uggla"

If this is a true statement I don't understand fantasy baseball at all. Well obv Utley over Uggla is a big upgrade, Holliday and Bay? I'm not so sure that by the end of this year they won't be putting up pretty similar stats. And giving up Santana AND Gonzalez in the bargain? Nuts.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, j.q. -- which team are you? I can't tell who's who from team names and email addresses.

I just wrote a long paragraph overanalyzing my fantasy league thought processes, but I think I'm the only first-timer around here and it'd be old news to everyone else. I just think I'd start to get a little traction with a roster of solid producers instead of streak-monsters who either go 0-for-5 or 4-for-5.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Alex said what I would say, but I'd cuss more, because WHAT THE FUCK are you doing trading the best starting pitcher in baseball in a 2-for-4 trade whe're you're trading the 4 AND not getting Bob Gibson's 1968 in return?

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

jq is the Sho'birds.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 17 May 2007 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

Johan's the only guy who isn't replacable imo

I love this, it's like you're saying "I wrecked my car and the insurance company won't pay for me to replace it ... so the car is the only thing that isn't replaceable imo but I can claim my car stereo plus the jacket I had stashed in the trunk and get excellent value for them."

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 17 May 2007 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

The deal probably went through because nobody's paying attention, except maybe D5/M.C.

I'm in first, so I can afford not to pay attention.

Also agree that ade got hosed. Utley and Holliday for just Johan would be closer to an equitable trade, IMHO.

Leee, Thursday, 17 May 2007 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

god fine i cancelled the trade. btw, holliday - more runs, hits, triples, rbi's, fewer strikeouts, and more total bases. fewer walks tho.

idk, i always felt like pitchers were pretty replacable. some dude i've never heard of will get hot later this year. i won last year and my best pitcher was Woody Williams.

cankles, Thursday, 17 May 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

If you can replace the best pitcher in the world with Woody Williams then fantasy baseball = stupid.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 17 May 2007 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

Also what kind of crazy league is it where you have Hafner and Santana on the same team?!?! Shouldn't those two guys be like top 10 picks?

Alex in SF, Thursday, 17 May 2007 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

they were autodrafted for me cuz i forgot abt the draft... 12 person league, hafner's 'ranked' around 17 so i guess i got a deal. when i examined the draft results i was appalled to see that a-rod lasted until the second round. i had the third pick and i got some fucking gaywad shitass fucking homo fuck pitcher fucking FUCKKKK instead of reyes or a-rod. fuck! i am so furious right now just thinking about it >:((((((((((((((((((((

cankles, Thursday, 17 May 2007 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

some fucking gaywad shitass fucking homo fuck pitcher fucking FUCKKKK

And his name is Jake Peavy.

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

are you badmouthing my latest aquistition? this shal not be tolerated!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 17 May 2007 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

FUCK BASEBALL

(unless it's hot)

i hate you so much alex

cankles, Saturday, 25 August 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

Haha wow was I wrong about Bay and Holliday!

Alex in SF, Saturday, 25 August 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

But Utley is hurt and Johan (esp) and Gonzales and Uggla are all putting up darn fine #s aren't they? I did say I don't understand fantasy baseball to be fair.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 25 August 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

gonzalez has been pretty 'enhhh' since may (well, up until the last 5 games, suddenly he is mashing it again), but i sold high on him and picked up carlos pena off waivers :3 i also traded uggla for roberts straight up, which is still unbelievable to me in retrospect.

you should try it next year alex! mb u would like it! it's fun to fuck around with your rosters constantly and also it gives you a reason to care about shitty games/teams

cankles, Saturday, 25 August 2007 06:59 (eighteen years ago)

It also makes you want to smash your monitor when you try to squeeze blood out of a turniphead named Bob Wickman.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 25 August 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

Ha ha aha!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Sunday, 26 August 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

well alex is an A's fan (as am I).
