"We showed good spirit all day and sent a message that we're not prepared to back down," Schwab said. "We've got to get harder as a footy club, get some respect back.

It's all over Schwab. It's time for you to go. If that is your idea of gaining some respect it shows how far the club and your coaching has fallen. How do you gain respect by punching and kicking players being held on the ground? BTW Schwaby, we kicked the next seven goals and eventually won the game by 74 points after your idea of gaining respect was carried out. Schwab, you will get some respect by being competitive.

Yesterday the Hawks were a joke and I have rarely enjoyed a win more.

chrisso (chrisso), Sunday, 6 June 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

How many will get reported do you think chrisso?

From what I saw, Vandenberg must be out for a minimum of two weeks, otherwise my paranoia will be out in full.

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Sunday, 6 June 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Have to agree chrisso, the idea of applying physicality is to win a game or at least make it a close game, not get belted by 15 goals. What a bunch of idiots, coached by an idiot and with teh biggest idiot as a director.

jsa, Sunday, 6 June 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on burgoynes 2 for a knee, vandenburg should get 3 for the punches thrown and landed and 3 for the knee he landed. But who knows its a mixed bag when u get to the tribunal.

jsa, Sunday, 6 June 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hawthorn are a joke and so is Schwab. The man makes Spudder look like Norm Smith.

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Monday, 7 June 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Dicker, the Hawthorn president, said yesterday that his initial feedback suggested there would not be any supporter backlash.

"Not from Hawthorn people, I walked into the social club and they were all just excited," he said. "They were just so excited that we had finally stood toe to toe with Essendon."

They've lost it at Hawthorn. Toe to toe?!?! Footy is about winning the match, you moron. The Hawthorn president is living up to his name, time for him to depart and he might want to take Brereton with him. What a sad state of affairs.

Answer to Your qustion, Lucy. Murphy has been reported for us and I expect that about 1/2 a dozen will get charged for wrestling and Vandenburg should get at leasr 8 if the tribunal are fair dinkum.

chrisso (chrisso), Monday, 7 June 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW am very proud of our usual 'hot heads',Solomon, the Johnsons and Rioli for not letting Whorethorns cheap tactics get to them. If this happened a year ago all four of them wouldn't be playing next week. Good sign that they got on with the footy and did their talking with their footy skills.

chrisso (chrisso), Monday, 7 June 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

From the little I saw of the game chrisso, Rioli starred. He's a worry do you think you could invite him around for dinner and feed him some of REB's porridge - by the bucket load so he's too stuffed to play next weekend?

I hope it's a good match with no injuries or reports on either side.

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Monday, 7 June 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Brereton: Unquestionably great player (but even if he was twice as great as Hart, Ablett and Jezza combined, still not even half as great as he thinks), but FFS he scould get his macho mid-life-crisis seen to while a shred of cred remains. His self-promoting, self-justifying 'AFL is tough and so am I' schtick was already boring and embarrassing three paras into his first newspaper column, but after Saturday it is pathetic.

The only thing saving Schwab from the bum's rush after Saturday's effort is the fact that if he goes, Brereton has the choices of a) following him out the door or b) looking like a complete hypocrite as well as everything else. There is no option c).

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 7 June 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say Rioli has already got well and truly stuck into REB's porridge but it hasn't slowed him down any as far as I can see. For a bloke who had the vultures circling at the start of the year he has been phenomenal.

The same could be said about half a dozen other Essendon players, some who have been there a little while, some a long while.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 7 June 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Rioli. LOL. Against Geelong he looked like he was going to kill us but I wasn't too worried. I knew he would be out of puff in the last quarter and sure enough, he dropped out of sight faster than Hawthorn's reputation as the Catters piled on the goals.

JSA has got it wrong. Essendon (and Rioli) are the flat track bullies of the AFL, not the Power. The highest ranked team they have beaten all year is Freo who are very suspect away from Sandgroper land. Get on the Lie ins this week.

regards,

REB

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Monday, 7 June 2004 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

A bit harsh judging someone on one quarter when the whole team went missing for the same quarter. Rioli has been sensational this year and whilst not being as fit as some(never will be) he is fit enough to be very damaging and worth his place in any team. I'd bet Bomber would love to have him.:-)

JSA has got it wrong. Essendon (and Rioli) are the flat track bullies of the AFL, not the Power.

I can't argue with that, we really need to claim a few big scalps before we can be considered contenders.

chrisso (chrisso), Monday, 7 June 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Harsh? My previous perception was proven factual by the events that happily unfolded LOL.

PS - Hey Susso, how many times has McPhee been belted this season ha ha.

Rik E Boy (Rik E Boy), Monday, 7 June 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure how the fat mexican does it, but he is a damn good player who is very difficult to tackle.

jsa, Monday, 7 June 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Susso, how many times has McPhee been belted this season ha ha.

He was belted by Vandenberg whilst having both his arms held by another Whorethorn player four ot five times, so the answer would be four or five.

Well, it has been an interesting couple of weeks. The Hawks continue to get flogged, not as bad as Richmond at least (in the last 3 anyway).
All this crud in all the rags about Hawthorn is amazing. Fancy a blue occurring on the footy field .... geez it's like it has never happened before. It always take two to tango and for all the hype about what the Hawks players "did", some of the Bombers hot heads have been doing it for years.
Personally, I do not think a lot of it was good footy, however, it does happen. People need to get over it. Those guilty of offences will have their day. Although, I don't think Vanders will go for 8 but will get a few, as will a couple of others (even some of the Bombers) if the tribunal are fair dinkum.

Hawka (hawka), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never seen an Essendon player kick and punch another player whilst being held on the ground by another Bomber. I've seen a Bomber choke another player. Hawka you sound as deluded as your president and your coach.

Personally, I do not think a lot of it was good footy, however, it does happen.

No Hawka, it doesn't happen. Respected clubs are too busy kicking goals and trying to win footy games rather than resort to cheap shots like the rabble that is Hawthorn. They tried to get some respect but now they are pittied more than anything.

chrisso (chrisso), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Brodie Holland has that mantel. Has there ever been a more gutless player? At least Johnson has some talent.

chrisso (chrisso), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems whenever there is a punch up/ melee / all out brawl one of the sides always involved, whether instigators or just participants if - ESSENDON.

Lucy Lion (Lucy Lion), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Enough talk. Just do your job lie ins and dispose of the pretenders with the sweetheart draw and the thousand free kicks in the forward 50.

Hawthorn got it all wrong. You don't have to fight to get respect you just have to pay for it...

We caused the Wetern Derby all-in as well.:-s

I would say that over the last few years we have had a lot of undisciplined players at Essendon who have fired up at the slightest provocation. As I said earlier in this thread I was proud our boys didn't get sucked in to it last week and got on with the footy. It's a big change and a very, very good sign. If this had had have happened two years ago they would have needed to build a new tribunal to cope with the numbers that would have been up on charges.

Porridge boy? You've lost me Chrisso.

Sorry, Fred made a joke last week about Collingwood supporters and their porridge.:-)

chrisso (chrisso), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

'We caused the Wetern Derby all-in as well.:-s'

Dale Kickett used to play for Essendon. If that's not enough of a connection for you I can't imagine what might be.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Vandenberg got six, Picioane got four and that little gay boy Brown got four. I'm very happy with that. Hawthorn got what they deserved and the tribunal has won some respect.LOL

How does Simon Beaumont get to serve his two suspensions concurrently? I think the AFL has opened up a can of worms there, every time a player gets a multiple charge will this be the case?

Hawthorn may have to re-think their respect strategy, maybe they could consider trying to kick goals or something like that. Idiots.

chrisso (chrisso), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dale Kickett used to play for Essendon. If that's not enough of a connection for you I can't imagine what might be.

Fred, you might be on to something there as Derek's cousin also played for us! Was Scott Cummings playing in that game as well? It alol makes sense now.

Dales cousin played for us as well.

chrisso (chrisso), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all too obvious to me that Wayne Johnson was NOT the Common Denominator, it's really been Sheedy all along.

He's the link to all of these undisciplined players at Essendon

Westener (Westener), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're looking for respect Hawthorn, don't pull on a Geelong jumper. Robert KnoWalls hasn't picked us all year and rates us 'the worst side in the competition'.

Chrisso ...

"I've never seen an Essendon player kick and punch another player whilst being held on the ground by another Bomber"
How long you been around? Essendon are well known for their physical "tactics" and have been since before the 70s. They tried some of those tactics against the Saints and were well beaten.

"No Hawka, it doesn't happen.
You're are baiting me aren't you ??? Do follow the soccer and support what they do with their faking and everything (a bit like some of the bombers that were felled by softest of touches)?

"Respected clubs ...."
like the Bombers ????

"Hawthorn got what they deserved and the tribunal has won some respect.LOL"
LOL is right

"I think the AFL has opened up a can of worms there, every time a player gets a multiple charge will this be the case?"
I honestly thought that's the way it always has been .... I could be wrong - again :)

As I keep hearing on the Radio ... the best $20 grand ever spent.

How true.

Hawka (hawka), Thursday, 10 June 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

All standard responses Hawka. Stuff you trot out when you've got sod all else left. All screaming 'my club made an A-grade turd of itself and everybody including me knows it'. Nobody is convinced of anything. It's bullshit so stale it doesn't even smell any more.

Some of the Bombers faked. What about the ones that didn't? The tribunal is there to sort out the truth from the crap. Which it did last night. Result? 15 weeks. Goodnight, farewell and Amen.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 10 June 2004 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Hawka. Watch the Geelong v Essendon tape from a few weeks ago. In the third quarter Essendon roughed us up and we lost our only quarter of the game. Bomber could get out there fast enough at three quarter time and in the last quarter we kicked a few goals and won the game. That is the ONLY way to gain respect...by putting it on the scoreboard.

I think David Parkin said it best when he mentioned that the Blue was mere camoflage (can't bloody spell DOH) for Hawthorn's poor form. Also, in the quarter of the blue, the Dons kicked 9 goals OUCH. Kicking goals is all anyone remembers long after the dust has settled.

chrisso (chrisso), Friday, 11 June 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

And not for being thugs. For instance when Dean Wallis stopped being a thug and started being a footballer, more than half way through his career, that was when he gained respect.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 11 June 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Still remember dean wallis applying his footy skills in the dying seconds of the prelim final against carlton, any chance oxygen reaches his brain?

jsa, Friday, 11 June 2004 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Sheedy: 'For more than 15 years I've been telling Dean there was no reason he couldn't be as good as David Dench and Robert Harvey combined. Why did the stupid sod have to choose that moment of all moments to suddenly decide he believed me?'

There can't have been many footballers drag more out of less than Dean Wallis. His work ethic could never be questioned and he wasn't even a particularly dirty player towards the end (I think Green in the 2000 GF was his first suspension since before the Hanna incident, which 10 years later I am prepared to concede may have been legal).

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

but we are respected
LOL, here's what people think ...
Why is it always the Bombers who whinge and get what they want?
simple answer is that Essendon has a culture of being sooks.

http://www.theage.com.au/yoursay2/2004/04/16/

And not for being thugs. For instance when Dean Wallis stopped being a thug
Did he stop being a thug. Didn't realise.

standard responses Hawka
Too true.

The tribunal is there to sort out the truth from the crap.
And we all know how good they are at doing it.

Essendon Respected?
Although they came out of the latest melee smelling like roses, I don't think so. The only people that "rate" them are their supporters (same as Hawthorn and a dozen other teams I guess).

Hawja, Saturday, 12 June 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

who the hell is Hawja?

Just found this also
"BRISBANE Lions coach Leigh Matthews has drawn the battle lines for another torrid encounter against Essendon at Telstra Dome tonight by nominating the Bombers as the common denominator in AFL melees."
http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0,8659,9820977-23211,00.html

I know ... an ex Hawthorn player well reknowned for his exploits. But still ...

Hawka (hawka), Saturday, 12 June 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Notice Hawthorn didn't try anything on last night (good try by a badly undermanned squad, BTW. THAT's how you gain respect in this caper). Derrr-mott was commentating the match on the idiot box.

Possible connection between those two statements? Would Vanden-Berk, Brownstuff and co have been so keen for a blue if they knew it would put Director Derrrr-mott directly under the hammer from his fellow commentators?

You'll hear less likely conspiracy theories.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 12 June 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't the worst effort by the Hawks, but still they should have gone on with it.
Not too sure about the connection Fred, personally, I don't think he had anything to do with it.

I think it had more to do with who they played. Funny to see them tonight with a couple more reports. Hopefully we'll see a bit of consistency from the tribunal.

Hawka (hawka), Saturday, 12 June 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hopefully we'll see a bit of consistency from the tribunal. "

Wishful thinking again Hawka!

"We all know what Essendon are like."

We're getting a fair idea what Hawthorn are like these days as well.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 19 June 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well named DE, like your namesake you never miss your mark.

'We are not obsessed with Essendon' from anybody at Hawthorn rates right up there with 'Elvis isn't dead' for believability.

And 'Difficult Don' may have helped save Hawthorn (done the headline-grabbing bits anyway) in 1996 but he'd be as much use as a chocolate teapot (which is one of many things he has been called over the years) as President or in any other position of real responsibility. Parkin and Eade were both pretty openly scathing last night.
