Favorite short story or play by Somerset Maugham?

I read a thing of his recently..."On Writing" or something, about his life as a writer. I think it was his diary. Anyway, it was about him being a writer. "A Writer's Notebook"? Maybe. Can't believe I don't remember. Anyway, I used to pronounce him "morg-ham" until my mother corrected me and told me it was "morm", and you know, fuck him if he's going to pronounce his name differently to how it's spelled. But it was good, that "Writer's Notebook".

Are you British or are you suggesting that there's actually an /r/ sound in there?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, maybe like a protracted backwoods Yankee "mom". "Mooorm".

Like "warm". So, yeah, there actually is an "r" sound in there. At least, one's tongue makes the "r" movement.

I liked the Moon & Sixpence. Now here's my joke.

"I went to an expedition of that French bloke who moved to Tahiti."
"Gauguin?"
"No, you can see it all in one go."

Poor isn't it?

Groan.

"The Razor's Edge" is terrific, the only other of his I've read is "Cakes and Ale" (such a lovely title) which started off well but just died in the last 1/4 like he was in a rush to finish it or something.

of human bondage is wonderful.

MikeyG: Yes, it's awful, but also wonderful.

So nobody has read any of his plays? No favorite short stories?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Uhh, no. Sorry.
