Sort of sheepishly posting this, as it desperately needs a rewrite -- so overwritten and elbow-to-the-ribs in places it makes my skin crawl, but hopefully, after I put it back on the old anvil for a while, it will make a decent foundation myth for my second novel...

Ann: I, too, admire a person's ability for that freewheeling highwire act--it's stuff that I can only think about doing, ie., it never makes its way down to the pen. So, is that an indication of the novel's style?

Aw, thanks for reading through the stumbles, guys. Yeah, the story posted above sort of reflects the novel's overall style -- but that's going to be the most mythical part, as it's back story. It's the origin myth of the protagonist's father; the protagonist will be half-god, and therefore touched with a bit of that religious aura, but he'll also be presented as an *adolescent* half-god, so there should be room for more genuine, less politically heavy-handed, humor in the rest of the book.

But first I gotta finish editing the one I'm on, which is much more straightforwardly humorous, so it's harder in some ways but easier in others. (In other words, the fucker is killing me but me loves him.)

While interesting enough on its own (I liked the trick he did with describing the crying woman's facial contortions before letting us know what the hell he was describing)Joyner's piece above had the added perk of forcing me to register on the Age web page. Am flailing around at home trying to think of another piece for The Age, unless you get in before me, as well as negotiating the embryonic stage of a novel: have at least got a draft of the first chapter, but am trying not to be such a loser and write consecutive chapters.

Keep plugging, Joyner. Every chapter you write turns into kind of a petri dish for growing the next one (I can't imagine being the kind of novelist who writes an outline BEFORE letting the characters run around for a bit -- must be nice to have such a perfect brain).
