This is a modification of a tangent on the best current stylist thread. So, what do people think of Hejinian, Silliman, Watten, Howe, Perelman, Bernstein, Osman and the whole slew? I say c=l=a=s=s=i=c when they're funny; d=u=d when they footnote Derrida, etc.

Oh and Scott, ee cummings should count, but the language people are too marxist-theoretical to acknowledge their debt to him. He's too silly for them, too well-known, too emotional, and too enjoyable. They disdain the "I," so ee is probably too human for them, too.

I am pretty sure I've read some lang crit on Cummings, but I forget who and what. And I'm not sure entirely how much of a debt they owe him -- E.E.'s language play is a lot less disruptive (or less profoundly disruptive) than most langpos'. You're OTM with your first comment, though.

I can't believe I missed this thread first time round, personally I have a lot of time for Hejinian and Silliman, as for the arguments on the ILE thread about the end product not being engaging....well, I've simply never found that to be the case either in teaching or at readings.

I quite like ee cummoings as well, so figure that one out.

I think Chris is right about Cummings, incidentally: generaly not nearly as disruptive as LANGUAGE poetry. With Cummings, there's usually some relatively straightforward referentiality thing going on that can be pieced together once you work out the way he has scrambled things.
