can you tell me why I can't use italics and stuff in my messages to ilx?

You can! Or you should be able to - just use standard html tags < i > and < /i > (without the spaces in them)

Actually you probably know that, sorry! And your qn is why does it not work for me in particular, in which case I have NO IDEA! sorry :(
