Hola, spuds! Read & weep as the last Loeb Supergirl gets a 2nd printing, and teh indiest indie in all of indiedom-da-dom-dom is released by Top Shelf:

Every Girl Is The End Of The World For Me

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 March 2006 14:44 (twenty years ago)

The end of the weekly waiting period for me:
HAWKGIRL (okay, fine, read it already; flawed but pretty)
MANHUNTER (very curious about the "She's switched sides!" angle)
SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (read it as a preview at NYCC; neat!)
GUN FU: SHOWGIRLS ARE FOREVER (Dave Sim writes his first comic in 2 years)
DAREDEVIL (Wait--his heart ISN'T beating any more!)
MARVEL ZOMBIES #1 3RD PRINTING (not especially interested in the series, but face it, tiger, this cover is brilliant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Marvelzombies1_3rdprint.jpg )
NEW AVENGERS (I'm caught up in the raptcha!)
BILLY HAZELNUTS HC (read this one already too: Tony Millionaire in full id-spilling-out mode, riffing on most of his favorite themes)
MOME #3 (better than the first two; mostly notable for awesome David B. story)

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Supermarket, Nextwave, X-Factor. Is that the Milligan X-Men that's shipping? I might check it out, but it's been boring the hell out of me so maybe not.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 20 March 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Just She-Hulk for me. Although if I can find Brubaker's first issue of Daredevil, I may crack instead of waiting for the trade.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 March 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm just glad that there'll be something there for me this week.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #16: gotta start catching up sometime.
NEW AVENGERS #17: uh, ditto.
SHE HULK 2 #6: shall have to tackle 1-5 beforehand.
NEXTWAVE #3: rare in that I'm already all sorts of caught up.
X-FACTOR #5: and ditto.
X-MEN #184: so when does Milligan exit? 'cuz that'll most likely be the end for me too.

and I might give that Squadron Supreme a chance.

Ooooh! A really really good week for me:

Runaways vol 5, finally!
Daredevil
Supergirl & Legion
Milligan X-Men
Brubaker X-Men
X-Factor
She-Hulk
New Avengers

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Milligan's final issue is 187. I'm actually very very curious to see what Mike Carey does with his weirdo team of X-Men.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

the Sim GUN FU if my shop has actually ordered it

the MOME and BILLY HAZELNUTS when/if they turn up in the bookstore, respectively

that is RIDICULOUS.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Apparently Batman do ship after all: http://www.diamondcomics.com/shipping/shipping_032206.txt

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 02:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking of getting all the Lady Death variants just so that this week is more than one title (She Hulk).

c(''c) (Leee), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Add all of this to whatever is waiting in my file from last week.

BATMAN #651
JSA CLASSIFIED #10 - maybe
SEVEN SOLDIERS OF VICTORY VOL 2 TP - probably not this week, but eventually
CAPTAIN AMERICA #16
DAREDEVIL #83
SHE-HULK 2 #6

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Loveless #5
Supergirl And The Legion Of Super-Heroes #16

Ares #3
Daredevil #83
New Avengers #17
Nextwave Agents Of Hate #3
She-Hulk 2 #6
X-Factor #5

X-Factor is definitely my new favourite of this list, though I'll be very sad to see Sook leave.

Oblivious Lad. (Oblivious Lad), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 06:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm super excited to read the new Daredevil.

My excitement for Legion has died down considerably since the last two issues were major duds.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 15:05 (twenty years ago)

i looooved the breezy feel of captain america this week. very bonnie & clyde/wild at heart panoramic asskicking. maybe it was the flying car that did it for me. it even kinda reminded me of the first few raodtrippin' Preacher trades. I like the romance subplot, and I hope it continues. on the dud side, some of the art looks v. shoddy to me. makes steve look really dull and jock-ish (vacant stares, goofy expressions, etc.)

I also read New Avengers, and was pleased. i don't know if i have that much to say about it, though. i thought the first few pages were RIDICULOUS, but it quickly picked up. i like carol danvers, usually, and i'm vaguely intrigued by the alien monster/house of m fallout that is attacking earth. that said, spidey's new costume sucks. so does the sentry--i can't make myself give a shit about him. better than the last issue, at least.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 22:04 (twenty years ago)

So, I got the first Sim Gun Fu. It's rubbish, and I shan't bother with the rest. WHAT A WEEK!

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 23 March 2006 06:12 (twenty years ago)

She-Hulk was good, as usual.

I tried the first issue of Hellblazer with the new writer (Denise May, I think), but ehh, didn't really get into it.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 March 2006 14:50 (twenty years ago)

FUCK.
I wrote a big fucking blurb on everything I read and then my computer froze and now it's gone. FUCK FUCK FUCK.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

STUFF I READ (lotsa stuff I didn't get to yet):
Green Arrow #60 - FUCK OFF. But the art's better than I expected. Maybe cuz it hearkens back to a time when reading GA was a guilty PLEASURE rather than a guilty STAB MYSELF IN THE THIGH. F+ (the + is for the art)
Infinite Crisis Secret Files 2006 - Wolfman: "Do I really have to spell this out for you morons? Well, at least I'm getting paid." Also, HOW CAN THIS BE HEAVEN WHEN ALL I HAVE TO WEAR IS THIS SHAPELESS (sexless) PURPLE FROCK? D-
JLA Classified #18 - Good ideas. Good art. The whole SALVAGED DEBRIS USED AGAINST US woulda made a much more fun SHAME OF THE SUPERHEROES paradigm-shifting miniseries. Regardless, fun DC Superheroes ACTION ADVENTURE is hard to come by these days, so I'll take it! B+
Nightwing #118 - I wanted to insert IN BLOOD into the credits page. Like, "written IN BLOOD by Bruce Jones ... edited IN BLOOD by Sylverster P. Doofus" etc. Okay art, at least. C-
Superman #650 - Hey, this is fun! Lotsa great stuff! Nice to see the old EVIL DOPPELGANGER FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION defense (implied, not mentioned) still works. I'm on board. A
Teen Titans Annual #1 - SNORE. D
Batman #651 - Well, this storyline didn't waste much time pretending to be interesting before heading down the crapper. Did Batman gain 20 lbs in his face during his year off? D-
JSA Classified #10 - I like Vandal Savage. I like OG GL. I like Revenge Stories. This is (so far) very competent and worth following up on. C+
Daredevil #83 - If such an unlikely comic reader exists who doesn't follow the internet or read the credits page, it might not even notice the creative team changeroo. Which is a good thing. The story just keeps barrelling along. JJJ shows up. Murdock remains in the jackpot. Gripping, fine stuff. B+.

Still to read:
She-Hulk
Captain America
Batman: Year 100
Showcase Superman Family

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 March 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Haven't gotten to read the full issue of Daredevil yet (just the first five or six pages), so I can't comment on it much, but yeah, it is rather like there wasn't a change in creative team other than in the surface details. I'm really happy about that.

Legion - eh, I'm not really cool with the twist at the end.

Milligan X-Men was really poorly paced and kinda shlocky, and not in a cool way.

Huk is correct about the Batman story going way downhill already. I'm dropping it and waiting for Morrison to start now.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 23 March 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Damn it - I got this issue of Batman (for next week) because of the restrained-yet-optimistic kudos the first part of this nonsense rec'd from you folks. I WANT MY THREE DOLLARS!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 23 March 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

SORRY.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 March 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I BLAME TOM

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 23 March 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

nextwave - maybe i was tired but it didn't seem too interesting
top ten 49ers - totally enjoyed but the "nazis rule USA" thing was so obvious and dumb

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 23 March 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was pulpy and fun, but it's a fine line.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 March 2006 18:11 (twenty years ago)

i just thought he coulda done better. in that one particular instance i mean.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh, are talking specifically about the...time travel scene, maybe? It's been a long time since I've read it.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

She Hulk - Good times! But the artist is awful, Mr. Conrad should stick to writing Heart of Darkness. A. (Also, the beefcake-off in the letter cols sez that Dan Slott is winning the competition for being shown in a thong.)

c(''c) (Leee), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

jordan--yeah, where they see the headline that appears to say "nazis run usa" even though it CLEARLY DOES NOT ACTUALLY SAY THAT AND ANYONE WITH A BRAIN COULD SEE THAT.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Ha, okay. I should re-read 49'ers anyway.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 March 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Batman: Year 100 #2: JEEPERS CREEPERS is this good. Aside from the fact that it's, y'know, just generally REALLY GOOD, what I really loved about BYC is that, y'know, sure, sometimes when artists want to make superheroes look "realistic" they'll put seams on their costumes. Like Lee Bermejo (the guy what did the Lex Luthor: MOS mini). Sure, that's okay. But Pope doesn't just put seams on costumes or rivets on the hardware. His crazy shit is MADE OUT OF STUFF. Pope goes the distance.
ALSO, I heard a rumour that Warlock Magazine is starting a petition to get Paul Pope to do his next Batman project in the Carmine Infantino style he dazzled with for one panel within BYC #2.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 23 March 2006 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Supergirl and Legion is, as Matthew says, eh. Not much happens apart from Supergirl appearing and dropping her lame cliffhanger. I really do not want to see legionnaires bickering with cops and adults - they should be having OC style soapy theatrics and fighting supervillains. This is now on cancellation watch.

I am giving Manhunter a try as I liked the tpb - Obsidian has got his powers back and is now gay! Manhunter is now working for that Bones guy who now has discovered some really good foundation for his transparent skin. Vague allusions to horrible things happening in TEH CRISIS and it ends with Kate having to be defence attorney to evil mentalist dwarf Dr Psycho

I also got the runaways digest which was better printed than previous volumes. I still think its great (esp liked wolverine appearance. ha ha) tho "Li'l Ultron" desperately needs a personality of some kind.

Mark C (Markco), Friday, 24 March 2006 10:29 (twenty years ago)

The 'Nazis Run USA' was fairly cringeworthy until I noticed that the time ray is looking through the pages, which is nice.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Friday, 24 March 2006 12:45 (twenty years ago)

It's just sort of depressing how Legion has gone from super awesome to very lame in the span of three issues. And if Supergirl is right and she's dreaming them all up, then why the fuck should we care anymore?
