i've been meaning to pick up a later can album for like forever. which one's should i get and which should i not? i have everything up to Soon Over Babaluma

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Babaluma is the last good one, side 2 is as good as anything.

After that record they bought a 16 channel multi-track & started overdubbing their parts seperately and it killed the band. All freakouts have been carefully removed. You can hear Czukay trying to get things in there with occasional burst of shortwave sampling but everyone else is just trying to ignore him, so he quit and made Movies.

Landed probably the best overall though still a letdown, Flow Motion has "I Want More", Unlimited Edition has a few moments, Can has "All Gates Open", and there's a good part about two minutes before the end of one track on Saw Delight. The reunion record has it's moments, but you can tell they're still not getting on.

Live 1971-1977 is 70% post-Suzuki boredom, but the 15 minute version of "Spoon" kills the album version, lifted intact from the opening of the "Free Concert" film.

Definitely buy all solo Czukay 79-86 before any late Can.

that was so OTM!

There was a great old UK LP comp of their Virgin stuff called Incandescence. That's still one of my favorite rekkerdz! The stuff that's good on those later albums is REAL GOOD.

I just got Czukay's "the Photo Song" 12 inch but haven't listened.

"Call Me" is a really good track on Saw Delight.

And I've said it before, but "Half Past One" on Landed is one of the most amazing tracks by anyone ever.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree Incandescence is a great compilation, better overall than Cannibalism 2, though you need that for 'Turtles Have Short Legs'

I may bash these records a bit, but it's not like I'm selling any of them. Landed is still better than many things.

I listened to Flow Motion last night though and there are some serious lapses there, some really horrible music. Too much Irmin. Saw Delight plays it safe & dull but it doesn't cause actual pain at any point.
