any recommendations? especially for design-related work? not for me--gf is looking

CNS, Update and CGR/7 are the only ones I've ever known mac production artists to get jobs through. Mostly non-creative stuff but depending on a job, sometimes production work requires and/or leads to design work.

However, it is BRUTALLY hard right now to get print work. Does she know Flash or web stuff? That's much better right now, and the above companies should service that as well.

thanks dan--i was thinking shed have a better shot at placement if she went for design stuff since thats where her skill-set/knowledge base is, but if its as difficult as you say she might be just as well-off not emphasizing her design work. she knows web basics but probably not enough to pass a rigorous test...

there's some fine lines to deal with it there...she should certainly emphasize being a designer because a)if she finds that kind of work it may pay better then production work, b)most designers aren't really totally qualified for production work, though it depends on the depth of the work, c)some production artist places don't even want to give designers those positions because they know they'll never be happy just making corrections to other people's designs. But then again, work is work. Where I'm at there's an art director who was doing just production for a while, happy to be making some money. On top of that he feels like he's learned a great deal about production, skills he'll be able to use as a designer, so it's win-win in that regard.

Can't say I know what the scene is like for designers/art-directors finding work. In the end I'd say work any angle she has through personal contacts, as those agencies will take a huge fee out of any money she makes.

yup. I'd suggest she get some familiarity with web stuff. I hate that, I'm print all the way, too late for me, not gonna learn flash, but as a designer maybe it's something she can get interested in. Even if it's not the focus, a quick look at craigslist and you see lots of people expecting both skills. I tell all everyone that mastering Wordpress is probably a great idea, a great skill to have, to be able to set up blogs for people, to edit and design blogs.

For print design, as mentioned, for some people it's a good entry to the field and a good way to transition to design eventually, but for other people it's a good way to shoot yourself in the foot and not be taken seriously as a designer after that. Depends on lots of factors.

yeah shes got a bunch of books on all these things. truth be told design isnt her only career interest/trajectory but i know shes good @ it and has some experience/knowledge... ill pass on your advice though dan, thanks a lot
