JUNE OF 44 - NOIZE CLASSIC OR NOIZE DUD

Talk about love/hate relationships:

I'm listening to "anisette" off of tropics... which is kind of bleh until you get to 6:15 - around the 7:30 mark which is like "Hey NICE!!! I like early Polvo too!"

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 15 August 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

its probably just me, but june of 44 and co also kinda left me "huh" -- never grabbed me and i don't consider it noise at all. then again i am a schmuck.

also polvo>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>juneof44

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 15 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i'm def. not implying they are noize, more asking the noize duds their opinions. there are elements of Jo44 that i'm drawn too but at the same time there are usually elements repelling me from liking it too much.

polvo were just from a different planet.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 15 August 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

DUD, and y'know this means something since I was like friends of 'em and stuff. Pains me to say it, even. I still have my t-shirt though (last worn as undershirt when out drinking with lauren this past week).

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i still love tropics and meridians a whole bunch

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

incidentally I ran into JEFF MUELLER while on my way to meet cutty, ddb and lauren for drinks that one day.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't listened to t&m in years. i remember the packaging better than the music. saw them at speak in tongues (cleveland, HOLLA!) maybe 9 or so yrs ago, and godheadsilo blew them away like totally.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

the one song about the Rocket House on the first album was nice, though. I have fond memories of Jeff Mueller singing it to me (and this girl who I was hanging out with, but didn't actually date or something) on acoustic guitar in what was probably the summer of 1994, about two months before the last Rodan show.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

btw gygax! in reference to your voicemail, 40205 is my old zip code.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 15 August 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

and actually come to think of it, I think I lived in 11222 when I first moved here?

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 15 August 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, needless to say i was drunken when i left you that VM.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

drunken or not, it still made me smile.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

ps. I am getting some nasty grafitti karma payback these days.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sharks and Sailors" I like + most of Four Great Points.. however it was during a 10+ min of guitar wankery moment at a June of 44 show that I suddenly realized I was sick of pretending to enjoy boring indie rock shows.. teh Black Cat crowd, though, they were into it.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them at the Jabberjaw (RIP) in LA ca. 94-95 (i think?).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

they done by 1995.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i seen em.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm 30.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm 28. I was thanked on the album. I OWN A MANSION AND A YACHT.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

you're having a breakthrough life

ddb (ddb), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

who are you kidding, gramps?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

myself, the student-loan people, my mom, my girlfriend, my employers, ilx, cutty, you, noize dudes, so on....

ddb (ddb), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ah okay. if this is the breakthrough, put me back in the egg.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

have you got your latest social security check?

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't qualify.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i am listening to ZZ TOP top right now and my bones are achey.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You just need an ointment.

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

rodan >>>>>>>>>>> tjo >>>>>>>>>>> june of 44.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

im listening to the electric eels right now and i want to punch you in the face, ddb (but only in a non-bruising, gentle way of course)

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Thx JC. THE ELECTRIC EELS ARE VERY GREAT EQUAL TO A PUNCH IN THE FACE.

I WILL LISTEN TO THEM TONIGHT

ddb (ddb), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

how does one go from rodan to tara jane o'neil?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

the answer lies with jaymc. Since he "discovered" her.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

link please!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahahahaha.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

oh but Eyeballs you forget the entire claim, which was he "discovered" Tara and Joanna Newsom!

Devendra Banhart's Voice Sounds Like Dave Matthews Especially On The Song "A Sight To Behold"

I sorta hate that Eggers has a hard-on for her, though, if only because I thought The Milk-Eyed Mender was going to be my big DISCOVERY of 2004, kinda like Tara Jane O'Neil a few years ago.

-- jaymc (jmcunning...), June 16th, 2004.

jm not so cunning, methinks.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Watch out hstencil. Adam's going to get an earful for this!

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

but did he discover adam.?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Especially funny because when hstencil was in San Francisco over a year ago we were sitting around catching up while Joanna played to about 800 people. She's real underground.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but did any of those 800 discover her?

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No but the guy who signed her was standing next to hstencil and I!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hstencil's "boss"... :-\

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but Will Oldham brought her to Dan K.'s attention. And I don't think 800 people were at that show, but I can check the spreadsheet if you like.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ps. also Dan didn't sign my check.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, jaymc is will oldham?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

what?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, attendance figures not available, nevermind. Prolly shouldn't talk about that shit anyway.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

dude Sterling Clover mentions TJO in an ILM post from like 2001 or something.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

INDIE

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Gygax!, I'm going to listen to my old cassette dub of Cor-Crane Secret for the first time in ten yrs.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

EXPLODED DRAWING.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
Tim never came back to report on his Polvo listen.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ddb is always going on about fucking EXPLODED DRAWING when it is clear that CELEBRATE THE NEW DARK AGE and TODAY'S ACTIVE LIFESTYLES are THE POLVO albums.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

jharkj and jailorj!
m.

msp (msp), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

celebrate's an ep.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

TODAY'S ACTIVE LIFESTYLES > COR CRANE SECRET > CELEBRATE THE NEW DARK AGE > EXPLODED DRAWING

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

celebrate's an ep.

it's an EP worthy of album status. also, irrelevant.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"worthy of album status" what does this mean?

i like every polvo release.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

it means there are no other EP's to rate it against. you are nitpicking.

read it this way if it makes you feel better:

ddb is always going on about fucking EXPLODED DRAWING when it is clear that CELEBRATE THE NEW DARK AGE and TODAY'S ACTIVE LIFESTYLES are THE POLVO releases.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

really, the quality of CELEBRATE THE NEW DARK AGE is the same in polvo's discography no matter what you call it, isn't it?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

this eclipse is an ep.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

you are annoying right now.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

CELEBRATE THE NEW DARK AGE >>>>>> THIS ECLIPSE

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

BAHHHHHHHHHHHH!

ddb (ddb), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

POLVO should do a REUNION tour in SIX YEARS

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

No 7 = 2012!!!

ddb (ddb), Monday, 28 March 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm...

I actually prefer June of 44 to Slint or Rodan. Maybe because their longer run gave them a chance to explore more directions? Or maybe because they're a bit looser/not as cold sounding?

(I could think of lots more possible explanations, but bottom line is that I can appreciate Slint or Rodan intellectually, but Jo44 is something I actually like listening to)

cheshy f cät (chëshy f cat), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe because they're a bit looser/not as cold sounding?

that's cause doug scharin is a fuckin hippie.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Slint > Directions In Music > Rodan > Jo'44

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

re: Scharin

yeah, I figured the difference prolly has a lot to do with him. Some of his stuff since has been a few notches too high on the wank factor though.

Jo44>Slint>Out of Worship>Rodan>Shipping News>Directions in Music>Drive Like Jehu

chëshy (chëshy f cat), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! encyclopedia of music:

Slint > Drive Like Jehu > Pitchblende > Codeine > Seam > Polvo > Gastr/Bastro > Directions in Music > Julie Doiron > Tortoise > Shipping News > [the good TJO songs aka the instrumentals] > Jermaine Stewart > anything else Cheshy likes, that old prog bastard > Night Soil Man

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

touche!

(where's the Boredoms?)

chëshy (chëshy f cat), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-b-but directions in music only put out one album! (and a 12"?)

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

however, the first song on that directions in music album needs to be listened to. NOW.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

they're from Kansai, not Kentucky/North Carolina/Illinois/DC (or Moncton, NB) so they are filed in the appendix.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Slint > Directions In Music > Rodan > Jo'44

-- gygax! (gygax0...), March 28th, 2005 5:53 PM.

this is OTM. I was surprised that I did not see one Ken Brown at either of the Slint shows i went to. He may have been there though, who knows. That first Directions full-length rules though.

Anybody pick up that new Bastro live thing? It's really great.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Stormy, h fwd'd me that Bastro live show, thanks indirectly.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i thnik he's talking about the album drag city released "Live: Antlers 1991" not the live thing joel was talking about.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I was talking about the new thing on Drag City. but glad you liked that other thing!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the drag city live thing is delayed, brodies.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i have it!

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm telling dan.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

jealous

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

not really. i look forward to buying it with my hard-earned money, thus ensuring grubbsy and dan k. and rian and other people get some hard-earned money too.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Gastr/Bastro

Are you saying they're on the same level? It'd be odd to group them as one unit otherwise.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc: first gastr album is performed by the last lineup of bastro, who also wrote the songs (albeit in a different form).

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

not really. i look forward to buying it with my hard-earned money, thus ensuring grubbsy and dan k. and rian and other people get some hard-earned money too.

i know the person who recorded the bastro shows and he isn't seeing a cent of this release.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

did he work for homestead? he doesn't deserve any then.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, didn't know that, h! interesting.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim never came back to report on his Polvo listen.

-- gygax! (gygax0...), March 28th, 2005.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 06:18 (thirteen years ago)

I love Polvo and really like about half of Four Great Points.
