Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious, do you find the internal mic and battery power of the 202 handy?

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Battery power, yes. Internal mic, sometimes. If I'm intending on gathering found-sound samples, I usually plug a mic (a shitty was-once-great Shure SM-58 from the mid-90s I bought from a friend for $10) into the mic thing, but it's come in handy when I had it in my backpack and heard things and was like "I GOTTA GET THAT SOUND".

I want the newer one a lot though.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

live I use two 202's and one 303. each does things that the other can't.

SP-202 pros: batteries, great built-in mic where the hi-end distorts instantly, distinctively cheap effects (staircase increments means you can play little melodies with the filter & ring mod), absolutely unshakeable forward/reverse scrubbing & mark point handling. cons: breaks easily, pads are clumsy and bad for tight drumming, horrible electric line noise when recording to RAM instead of the smartcard.

SP-303 pros: BUILT-IN SEQUENCER, high fidelity effects (excellent 'tape delay' sound) that are 'playable' on the knobs, pads are responsive enough to use for drumming, sturdier knobs & construction, easier to edit samples, longer sampling time, smartcards readable as harddrives if you have a USB reader. cons: longer sampling time means chunky file management & long long delays, forward/reverse often goes completely dead during manic scrubbing, huge wallwort power supply makes travelling miserable esp. in europe.

AX-80

SK-60 (needs mods for direct line in's and out's, but the sample hocketing option is incredible)

NUMARK CDN88

Behringer mixers are likably small & sound fine but they do not overload well, the high end shatters. Mackies still distort the best.

Dan, is that a Farfisa? I've got a Farfisa VIP-200/R, but I can't find pics (or really ANYTHING about it at all) online. I guess I should just go ahead and take some photos of mine. But yeah, I love me some Farfisa organs.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

More stuff I gots:

early-1900s upright acoustic piano
Wurlitzer Electric Piano
Yamaha CP-30 Electric Piano
Yamaha DJX
5 Casio keyboards of varying degrees of awesome/suckiness
1 shitty hollowbody electric guitar
1 shitty Mexican shwag Squire strat
1 5-string fretless Epiphone bass with stickers all over it
1 something-that-starts-with-a-"W"-brand mandolin
1 Martin backpacker guitar
1 one-stringed Southeast Asian instrument called an "irhu"(sp?)
1 old Italian accordion
1 Boss DR-550 drum machine
an assortment of guitar stomp boxes ranging from awesome to ghetto
1 mid-80s Pearl Export drumkit
1 Simmons SDS7 electronic drum kit
1 shitty stolen-from-my-old-high-school alto saxamaphone
1 shitty stolen-from-my-old-high-school trombone
2 plastic recorders (one soprano, one tenor)
4 harmonicas (in the pretty-much-useless keys of Bb, F#, Eb, and C#)
1 "awesome helm" (an old shiny bicycle helmet I rigged up with a gooseneck mic and "in-ear-monitors")
an assortment of buckets and cans I gathered from my restaurant days
lord only knows what that thing is in the back of my closet

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a farfisa combo compact, pretty much the classic model, bought in cleveland some years ago for about 200 bucks. The VIPs are cool, hadn't heard one untill a friend got one, all the percussion type features are really cool. To the left of the Farfisa is my most recent toy, an Arp String Ensemble. Below it is my Arp 2600 and my favorite thing of all, an MXR EQ pedal.

but I'd trade it all for a Wurlitzer 200a. Is that what you've got, nick?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Let's talk about more gear. I don't have too much.

Fender FB-55 Banjo
Moog Theremin built from a kit.
Electric gitjo (Old 80's electric guitar spliced with a banjo neck bought from a crazy guy that makes hybrid instruments for fun)

But I'm building pedals now.
Spectra Distortion Pedal I built for practice (it works but I've got to finish the housing)
I've got two circuits printed for a Tone Generator and Jawari Pedal, with parts on the way. I want to make harsh sounding stuff like Sirkut Electronics.

Dale the Panopticalist (cprek), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

would love to know more about tone generators.

brock (brock), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just building a really simple 555 timer IC based oscillator that I found in a book, modifying the design for line out instead of a speaker.

it's similar to this http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_6/chpt_6/7.html

How much more popular do you think Gamecube could have been if their controllers had butt plugs on them to begin with?

internet comedy novice (Matt Chesnut), Friday, 2 September 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

11x

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 2 September 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

If Xbox had buttplugs on the controllers, they would have been too wide for japanese anuses.

Fushigina Blobby: Blobania no Kiki (ex machina), Friday, 2 September 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

I just want to point out (he, he) that I didn't know those were butt plugs until it was mentioned.
